Foundation Report 2018hank you from the LARRC foundation for all your sup-

port during 2018. The Los Angeles Rod and Reel Club Foundation is a

501(c)(3) charitable organization, established in 1951 bythree of the LARRC charter members, Robert M. Thomp-son, Myron J. Glover, and Max Fenmore. The mission of theFoundation is to provide children in need with the oppor-tunity to participate in recreational fishing through variousprograms sponsored by the Foundation. The intent is to en-courage and support future generations of anglers, teach-ing the future anglers the skills and ethics of sportfishingwhile providing by example high standards of sportsman-ship in recreational fishermen.

The Foundation funds the annual Kids Trip, which lastyear started running out of 22nd St. landing. This very suc-cessful program has administered for years at by StevenLinda Simon. The Mentor trips feature fewer anglers on oneboat. Trips in 2018 took groups out of 22nd Street Landing,Ventura, and Marina Del Ray. Thanks to Scott Schiffman,Randy Sharon and Joe Mahfet, who oversaw these trips.

Another aspect of the foundation is to encourage andfinancially support research and educational programs thatwill ensure the future of recreational fishing. For manyyears now, the Foundation has supported graduate studentsin marine biology at Cal State University, Long Beach. Some

of the recipients of the scholarships have spoken at pastyearly banquets, and the Chumline has run several articlesregarding the fruits of their research, focused on localsportfishing issues.

The Foundation offers financial support to Friends ofCastaic, a like-minded civic organization that sponsors manyyouth fishing programs at Lake Castaic. Foundation grantshave helped the Wild Oceans Foundation conduct impor-tant research regarding forage fish in the ocean, Hubbs SeaWorld with the white sea bass, and the Aquarium of thePacific.

The number of trips for young anglers and the amountof financial support given to support research varies fromyear to year. The Foundation has no endowments or in-vestments. The Foundation raises money each new year, and puts the money to good use every year. Every year is anew year for fund raising and additional adventures.

The Bill Poole Memorial award is given annually toanon-member of the LARRC who has demonstratedoutstanding leadership and made the greatest impactfor the advancement of recreational of sportfishing.

The award is named for the legendary Bill Poole, founder of Fisherman’s Landing, skipper of the RoyalPolaris when the world record yellowfin tuna wascaught, builder and skipper of the Excel, the largestsportfisher in the fleet, and all-around legend. Thestatue of Bill Poole outside of Fisherman’s Landinglists seven boats that he built and/or captained. His bi-ography is usually on sale every year at the Fred HallShow (If you have not read this fascinating piece ofangling history, pay special attention to the chapter onthe first long-range trip, a Dan Felger LARRC charterto Guadalupe, captained by Bill Poole).

The recipient this year was Bart Hall. Among hismany activities, Bart is currently in charge of produc-ing the Fred Hall Show, one of the largest fishing andoutdoor shows in the nation, which was started by an-other industry legend, Fred Hall (Bart’s father). Thisshow needs no introduction to club members, as aninformal poll taken at the banquet indicated basically100% attendance at this landmark annual event. Theshow has evolved over its 74 years, and now includes

instructional seminars, booths with representativesfrom all the Southern California landings and most ofthe sportfishing fleet, guides, tours, demonstrations, destination locations and a kids trout pond. About adozen club members indicated they had attended aHall show at a location prior to its current 40 year runat the Long Beach convention center.

Bart had a fascinating career prior to going to workfor the family business. He was an accomplished jazzmusician, touring the world with different artists. Hehas been married to his wife Ginny for fifty years.

The Hall family and organization have long sup-ported recreational fishing in California. Currently Bartis on the state board of directors and the executivecommittee of the Coastal Conservation AssociationCalifornia (CCA CAL). This organization is the lobby-ing group for recreational anglers, trying to save sport-fishing for future generations. Bart has been along-time spokesperson for the advancement of recre-ational fishing.

At the banquet Bart gave a very well receivedspeech, with interesting anecdotes from the Fred HallShows of years past. Congratulations to a friend ofrecreational sportfishing.

ENVIRONMENTAL MATTERSSubmitted by Eric Rogger

u MODERN FISH ACT. . . This act, before Congress for sev-eral years, was signed by the President late last year. Prior to thisdecisions regarding our fisheries were arrived at under the Mag-nuson Stevens Act. What this means is that finally the needs ofrecreational fishing are being recognized. Recreational fishingcontributes substantially to our economy. The report in SaltwaterSportsman Magazine cites that there are 11 million of us with a$63 billion impact and 440,000 jobs. Many Organizations helpedto achieve this. Among them the American Sportfishing Assn.Coastal Conservation Assn. and Recreational Fishing Alliance. Most importantly we will no longer be considered part of the com-mercial fishing industry.

u GROUND FISH REGULATIONS. . .New rules regardingdepths at which California anglers can fish have been increased insome areas to 450 feet and cow cod areas can be fished in depthsup to 240 feet while reduced daily limits of ling cod from two toone have been announced. We know this gets a bit complicatedbut are certain your boat crews will be able to update you.

u PACIFIC SALMON CATCH. . . A commercial magazine Isubscribe to (National Fisherman) reported a slight increase insalmon catches during 2018. California trollers caught 670,236lbs. of 2018 kings vs. 570,836 lbs. in 2017. However, the fleet got$8.39 per lb. in 2017 vs. $7.19 per lb. in 2018.

u IN CASE YOU MISSED IT. . .Scientist Alex Hall, who worksand directs the Climate Science Center at UCLA, notes that weare seeing more and more changes. A NOAA report listed 14 cli-mate related disasters in US last year. (One of these were the Cal-ifornia Wildfires) Both agencies seemed to agree on the long termpace of global warming. The report was detailed in an article carried by the LA Times (Feb.7 2019)

u ALL ABOUT FISHING LICENSES. . .As reported in thiscolumn on an earlier occasion – California Fishing Licenses pur-chased during the course of each year were only valid until theend of that year. (i.e.) If you bought your license in September itwould expire in December. We should be happy to learn thatAB1387 introduced by Assemblyman Jim Wood (Santa Rosa)along with a bipartisan group of 12 other legislators, would makelicenses purchased at any time during the year valid for 365 days. The bill would also require the CDFW to create an app where li-censes can be displayed on mobile devices. Credit for this legis-lation should go to the California Sportfishing League (CSL) Allfishermen should voice their support for this act.

u 2019 FISHING LICENSES. . . In case you have not purchaseda required current license, please note that you can do so on line- https:/www.wildlife.ca.gov/licensing/online-sales.

BLAST from the PAST!from the PAST!

A Father’s Perspective3rd Annual Parent/Kid, 5-Day Trip Polaris Supreme – June 19 – 24, 2004By Scott Schiffman, Chatsworth, CA

In a word “Awesome” would certainly describe thistrip on the Polaris Supreme. Captain Tommy Rothery andhis phenomenal crew have once again delivered beyondall expectations to twenty-four anglers, including eightkids’ under14 years of age, a grandfather/daughter team, and a father and son in-law team. On what has become anannual event, I was on board with my ten year old sonArthur, for our second year on this father and son trip.

Our five day trip returning June 24th began with theair of a reunion, as many of our fathers and kids caught upon the last year. It was amazing to watch my son alongwith the other junior anglers bond as only kids do, withfriendships cast long before the first jig. While heading outto sea and down the Baja Peninsula, Chef Javier prepareda beautiful Prime Rib Dinner with all the trimming, inwhat would become an epic gastronomic adventure. Healso always prepared something for the kids.

Happy Fathers’ Day! Our first full day at sea was flatcalm with typical June overcast. The flat seas would con-tinue throughout the trip, much to my son Arthur’s delight. At daybreak we found ourselves at Benitas Island, withthe opportunity to fish for Big Yellowtail. For most of theday the fish cooperated nicely, close to 50 Yellow Tail werecaught from 18 to 30 pounds, with the bulk in the 22 poundrange. Rocks and Seals took their toll on tackle and fish, with more than one Yellowtail exhibiting the results fromthe seals lunch buffet.

We spent the better half of the day catching Yellowtail, fathers and sons, side-by-side at the rail. The fishing alonemade for a great day, but watching our kids, rods bent, catching monster Yellowtail was without a doubt the bestFathers’ Day present I could imagine. That night, ChefJavier served another delicious meal while heading towardthe promise of Albacore the next day.

The next morning we were still heading toward the Al-bacore grounds, several boats had done well there the priorday. The morning fishing was spotty, with a few Albacoretaken at each stop. The Albacore ranged from 18 to 30pounds with most in the 20+ pound range. It was a lazyafternoon until close to 4:00 pm, when it seemed all theAlbacore schools in the area converged under the stern ofthe Polaris Supreme! For the next few hours, it was utterchaos, with both seasoned and novice angler falling victimto the wide open bite. Everywhere you looked there werebent rods, with many of the kids out fishing the seasonedpros.

The Captain decided to spend the night, hoping for arepeat of the afternoon bite. That night with the sea an-chors out, and calm seas, we replayed the excitement ofthe afternoon Albacore bite. The kids were quickly learn-ing the art of telling a “Fish Story” and the finesse of the“One That Got Away”. After another fabulous dinner pro-vided by Chef Javier, the junior anglers moved to the deckon a mission to catch squid, while the adults relaxed. Whencurfew was called the final score was 1 squid, 1 shark, andsome tired junior anglers.

The morning beckoned with Captain Tommy on thehorn, it was time to fish! The day was a repeat of the priorday, without the afternoon bite. Captain Tommy had no

problem finding fish; they just did not want to play. An-other interesting observation was, that we were not gettinghit while trolling, Tommy would see the fish stacked upand we would stop to fish, productive, but very different.

Captain Tommy was determined to make our last dayof fishing, a bite to remember. And true to his word, wehad an epic afternoon bite that went on until we headed to-ward home. By the end of the day, most everyone had theirfill of Albacore, and many were releasing their fish. Whatan unbelievable way to end an awesome trip!

With my second trip coming to a close, I cannot helpbut reflect on how well the kids became a part of the com-munity that was on the Polaris Supreme. As anglers, theydisplayed skill far beyond their years, even the first timersimproved dramatically with each passing day. The respectthat our junior anglers showed each other and the adultswas impressive, and their fishing etiquette was superior tomany adults, I have fished with in the past. It was obviousto all that the kids were an integral part of the trip, and notsomething of a hindrance.

I have referred to Chef Javier and his delicious meals. This is an understatement. The artistry and attention thathe attends to each meal is exquisite. The aroma of delicatesauces tempt you long before you dine, with dishes, suchas Prime Rib, Chilean Sea Bass with Mango Sauce, CrabCakes, Rack of Lamb, and for the final night, Steak andLobster. Javier, you are an amazing chef, and a delightfulperson. Fine dinning on a fishing trip, with Chef Javier,it’s guaranteed.

I want to thank J.C. Hardemion, Norin Grancel, DaveZiegert and Charter Master Larry Brown for allowing meto join their evening wine tasting circle. It was a perfectcompliment to Chef Javier’s phenomenal cuisine.

Captain Tommy Rothery, and the crew of the PolarisSupreme, are all very professional, competent, but they arealso extremely helpful. One thing you notice on the Po-laris Supreme, the crew is always smiling, and alwaysready to help an angler, no matter how small. You have mysincere gratitude.

I would be remiss without mentioning that we had aseparate jackpot for the kids. The winners in order were,1st place Jessica Rothery (Captain Tommy’s daughter),2nd place Philip Friedman Jr., and 3rd place ChuckieByron.

Thanks to Phillip Friedman for the T-shirts and good-ies, and everyone on the Polaris Supreme, for making thisyears trip the success that it was. I look forward to fishingwith all of you again next year!

The Larry Brown 16/13 Day charter on the Red Roos-ter 3 returned to San Diego late February with a smallbut happy group of anglers. It was an ultra light loadof 15 good anglers each having their own room, ex-cept for one married couple. The Red Rooster is ahuge fishing platform and with only 15anglers itseemed like it was semi private luxury. On the way tothe southern zone we stopped at Alijos Rocks hopingto troll up a wahoo or two for lunch or dinner. We weregreeted by hordes of hungry wahoo jumping on thenew, incredible Nomad DTX 200 Minnow and maulingour jigs and bombs with reckless abandon. The newJRI Hooiside Bomb seemed especially productive.Going over daily limits could have been easy for thebetter anglers but goodethics and a mindful crew keptthat in check. We left them biting to continue our jour-ney to the land of giants.

When you are fishing in an area where you know a300# tuna is likely swimming within a couple mile ra-dius of your bait the adrenaline is always amped to a100 plus. Yours truly was the first to connect with asmall 80lb class tuna, which was donated to becomesashimi, sushi, poke and AHI steaks for the next fewdays. It was not the giant we were looking for. A cou-ple other fish 60 - 120 lbs came over the rail and thenI connected to a monster. I was using my Avet 50 onone of the new 8ft Phenix rail rods and was veryhappy I didn't seccumb to the temptation to drop downto 80 or 100lb rigs to match the fish we had been see-ing and hooking. I have seen way too many heartaches to make that angler error. This "IS" the land ofthe giants and preparation and discipline are neededto win the few blessed opportunities handed to you.Experience told me this was a trophy fish. There wasno doubt he was big, ie, cow class, 200+ lbs, but hewas also a mean, cagey bastard too. After a couple ofblistering runs he changed strategies to try cutting meoff on the reef structure 100 fathoms under the boatand made multiple attempts to rap me around the an-chor line. I out witted him on each of these moves. We finally settled in to a straight up and down battle, where he turned his broad side towards the boat andbegan circling 400 - 500 ft in the deep blue. Now it'sjust his will to survive Vs my will to conquer - two re-

spected gladiators in battle. Pushing my drag beyondstrike I was able to keep his nose pointing slightly upso each deep circle gave me another fathom of line.Even with 35 lbs of drag he was able to pull up an-other 50 feet either through one last desperate attemptfor freedom or the captain suggested he was beingchased by sharks. Oh no, why did he mention sharks? We lose so many big fish to the huge brown sharks inthis area. Larry, don't let this affect your psyche!!! Italk to myself; "No sharks, no sharks, no sharks!!!" Ikeep the pressure and see my 300' marker come onmy reel. Another 5 minutes I get my 200' marker onmy reel. I am winning the battle but realistically knowthis is where most big fish are lost. My fish starts to gocrazy. I race from the stern to the bow. The crewgrabs my rod as the fish tries to wrap around the an-chor rope. I get the rod back on the other side of thebow and realize he's gone back to the stern. We runto the stern knowing he's headed straight into theprops and rudders and rubbing along the chine. Weluckily make it under all of that danger and settle in toour last 100' of battle. A crewman sees a flash of sil-ver and we have deep color. I go to full drag, 40#s,and even hold the spool with my left fingers to assureha can't take an inch of line. He is doing his final death

circle 80 ' below the boat and every time he swingsunder the boat we are very mindful of the chine, propsand rudders. My 8ft rail rod is very helpful giving me acouple extra inches of clearance but every circle isdicey. He's 30' away and 3 giant gaffs are ready for de-ployment. It ain't over, 'til it's over. This is where bigfish test every potential weakness in your system.Knots break, connections break, hooks pull or break, line explodes, even reels and rods can fail under somuch pressure. One of my buddies hooks a wahoo onthe other side of the boat. His wahoo screams throughthe water and comes around the stern to our side justas my fish is on his outside circle. We avert disaster bymillimeters. All I need is 3 feet of line for each circleand he's mine in 6 circles. Everything is working. Thecrew and angler are in synch. I see one crew memberwith 8' arms reach over the rail trying to gaff the mon-ster but it is just out of reach. One more circle. Thistime two gaffs and then a third sink in and he's ours.Just another typical hour on a winter long range boat.

My fish weighed in at 251lbs and kept the number 1place until the last two days of the trip. The last twodays decided the jackpots. We welcomed a 266 and277 onto the boat and on the very last day 82 year oldStan Malin, an LARRC member 30 years ago who hadnot been long range fishing for 40 years during histeaching career, landed a 308lb super cow. Mike God-frey has already sent Stan a membership applicationand I'm pretty sure Stan will be rejoining the club. Soget ready to welcome Stan back and congratulate himon his fish of a lifetime.
