HUMAN ACTIVITY AND CLIMATE
How is human activity influenced by climatic conditions?
• Good tourist industry in subtropics like Florida• Sports are affected: golf – summer hockey – winter• Transportation is affected - winter tires in temperate
zone• School closed during summer season in temperate zone• Religious tradition of Christmas strongly associated
with winter conditions• Clothes - changes with the season• Crops, livestock, vegetation and wildlife will vary
affecting diet and health and culture• Where people live – higher populations in areas with
better climates• MANY MORE…..
Threats and Hazards!!
• Snow avalanches• Flooding• Mud slides• Winter blizzards• Tornados• Hurricanes• Heat waves
• Case studies in the text – Pages 87 - 89.
How are climate conditions affected by human activity?• The pollutants we put into the atmosphere increase the
greenhouse effect – this leads to global warming.
The developed countries are doing the most damage – and have the responsibility to try and reduce the amount of pollutants.
Pollutants cause depletion of the ozone layer – allowing more UV rays in and increasing the risk of skin cancer.
Again, developed countries do the most damage.
