Old Testament evidence

Thus says the Lord,

the King of Israel and

his Redeemer, the

Lord of hosts: “I am

the first and I am the

last; besides me there

is no god. (Isaiah

44:6)

“I am the Alpha

and the Omega,”

says the Lord God,

“who is and who

was and who is to

come, the

Almighty.”

(Revelation 1:8)

Also Rev. 1:17, 2:8

Old Testament evidence

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. (Zechariah 12:10)

Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. (Revelation 1:7)

Called by the Names of God

Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58)

waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, (Titus 2:13)

None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. (1 Corinthians 2:8)

The Incarnation

The Importance of the Incarnation

The Atonement stands on it

Our Trust in the Bible relies on it

It is a sign of attacks on the miraculous

It exposes false doctrines and teachers

Page 15: Humanity Of Christ 1

Incarnation: Atonement

Errors of Gnosticism

Errors of Modernism

Page 16: Humanity Of Christ 1

Incarnation: Atonement

If Christ is not God in humanity, the God has not spoken the final word for our justification For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus

Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. (2 Corinthians 8:9)

If Christ is not fully human, then He is inadequate as a mediator, incompetent as a sympathizer, disqualified as a redeemer

Page 17: Humanity Of Christ 1

Incarnation: Trust for the Bible

If the incarnation is an impossibility, what does that tell us about the trustworthiness of the Bible?

What does it say about a Christian’s faith if he denies clear Biblical statements because his mind cannot conceive of exactly how the incarnation “would work,” or because science tells us it is “impossible.”

Page 18: Humanity Of Christ 1

Incarnation and Miracles

Fallen man does not want to see God involved in human affairs

Those who attack Christ’s humanity want a “watchmaker” God

Page 19: Humanity Of Christ 1

Exposes false teachers

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. (1 John 4:2–3)

For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. (2 John 7)

The Incarnation

The Purpose of the Incarnation

Salvation of sinners

Manifest God to man

Manifest man as he was created

to be

Page 21: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Salvation of Sinners

For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. (Ephesians 2:14–16)

Page 22: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Salvation of Sinners

Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.’ ” When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. (Hebrews 10:5–13)

Page 23: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Salvation of Sinners

For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:18)

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. (Hebrews 4:15)

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)

Page 24: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Salvation of Sinners

For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, (Romans 8:3)

Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:12)

Page 25: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Salvation of Sinners

Hebrews 9:11-18

Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. (John 12:31–33)

Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. (1 John 3:8)

His glory

Page 27: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Manifesting God

His Power This man came to Jesus by night and

said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him.” (John 3:2)

His Wisdom The officers answered, “No one ever

spoke like this man!” (John 7:46)

Page 28: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Manifesting God

His love For God so loved the world, that he gave

his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (1 John 4:9–10)

Page 29: Humanity Of Christ 1

Purpose: Manifesting God

His glory For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6)
