Proud and Deadly Awards – The Albury Aboriginal Educational Consultative Group (AECG) held their annual Proud and Deadly Awards ceremony yesterday at Albury Public School. These awards recognise our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and community who support them. We had several of our students receive awards for dedication to learning, attendance above 95% and outstanding sporting achievement. Ms Robertson was recognised for her commitment to supporting Aboriginal students. Congratulations to all our students and Ms Robertson. Attendance: Regular attendance at school is vital if students are to maximise their potential. We have 6 weeks remaining of the 2019 school year – that is a huge amount of time for learning, achieving targeted outcomes and socialising with friends. Please ensure that your child is at school to benefit from the opportunities that school can provide. All absences need to be accounted for, and parents are asked to contact the office when their child is unable to attend. NSW Department of Education Swim Scheme: Notes are going home today for this popular program which provides students from Year 2, 3 and 4 the opportunity to take part in structured lessons and activities that aim to develop water confidence and provide them with basic skills in water safety and survival. This program will begin in Week 8, Monday 2nd December and conclude on Friday 13th December 2019. This is a free program, with parents only needing to pay pool entry fees ($36). Please be sure to return notes promptly to secure a place for your child. Presentation and Graduation Day: This year we will be holding our annual Presentation Day on Monday 16th December 2019. The ceremony will begin at …. The Year 6 Graduation ceremony will take place that evening at 5.15pm; this will be followed by a disco from 7pm to 8pm, with Year 3-5 students invited. 2020 Preschool: We have vacancies in our Preschool for 2020. If you, or any family and friends have children interested in attending the Preschool in 2020, please contact the Office for enrolment details and further information. Research shows that children who participate in quality preschool programs, such as our very own Preschool, are more likely to arrive at school equipped with the social, cognitive and emotional skills they need to engage in learning.

Countdown to Kinder: Mrs Elliott is continuing her work with our 2020 kinder students in the Countdown to Kinder program. This is an integral part of transition to school programs; if you know of anyone wishing to enrol in Kinder next year, please have them contact the school so that they can also access this program and prepare for ‘big school’. 2019 P&C: The P&C is a group of parents and family and community members who raise funds for various initiatives throughout the school and manage our canteen. Our P&C held its Annual General Meeting last Tuesday. At this meeting, office bearers were elected and appointed for the upcoming 2020 school year. They are as follows:

President: Lisa Schneider Vice Presidents: Gemma Brown & Katie O’Brien Secretary: Pam Lockley Treasurer: Cherie Cunningham

Congratulations to Lisa, Gemma, Katie, Pam and Cherie on your 2020 P&C positions. Thank you to Lisa, Pam and Katie for their time and effort in the roles of President, Secretary and Treasurer over the past 12 months. If you would like to be part of the P&C, our next meeting will be on Tuesday, 26 November 2019, 7pm in the staffroom – all welcome. If you are able to help out at our fundraising events or in the canteen, please contact the school office for further details. 2020 Planning: We are continuing to plan 2020 classes and staffing requirements. Please inform the office, as soon as possible, if your child/children will not be attending Hume Public School next year.

1MC has been learning about gravity as part of their

science unit “Force and Motion”. This week they

made mini buckets using a paper cup and string.

They filled them up with water and small blocks and

were amazed that whilst swinging them around in

circles neither the blocks or water fell out.

Countdown to Kindergarten Week 4! Teddy Bears Picnic today for our 2020 kindy class. The children are thoroughly enjoying their countdown sessions, becoming more familiar with our school by the week.

From our PRESCHOOL

Every Child Every Chance Every Day

A lot of our preschool children have started orientation at their chosen Primary Schools for 2020, this is a very exciting time for the Preschool children and also for parents there is a lot to think about coming up to starting Kindergarten in 2020. Within the preschool we have being focusing on various aspects of school life and how it changes from being at preschool, this is really important for the preschool children to understand as starting school is a very big TRANSITION. Please see below these great tips for starting kindergarten in 2020 : Starting school is a significant event in the life of children and their families. Strong relationships and information sharing between families, early childhood settings and schools help support a child's successful transition to school.

When to start Children can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn 5 on or before 31 July that year. By law, all children must be in compulsory schooling by their 6th birthday. When your child starts school is an individual decision. You may wish to discuss this with your child's preschool teacher, carer, doctor or your local primary school. Our teachers are trained to work with your child regardless of their age or level of development. Children develop at different rates and learn skills in different ways. Your school will respond to the needs, learning styles and rates of progress of individual students. Schools also plan learning experiences based on the skills students bring with them to school.

Orientation Day

Most schools have orientation days towards the end of the year to welcome children starting Kindergarten the following year. Many schools also have transition to Kindergarten programs over several weeks in the second half of the year. Contact your local school for details. Useful activities to try in the lead-up to starting Kindergarten include: • Write down the date your child will start school • Make sure your child can use the toilet independently – including urinals for boys – and practice good hand-washing techniques. • Write your child’s name on all their school things and involve your child in organising them and recognising their name. Make sure your child’s name is not visible on the outside of anything they’ll be wearing to and from school. • If you live close to school, practise crossing roads safely as you walk the route with your child. • Help your child put on their school shoes and walk in them. • Let them try dressing in their school uniform. • Encourage them to write the letters of the alphabet. • Let them practise drinking from the bubbler.

• Guide them to cut and paste pictures from a magazine and draw pictures. The first day of Kindergarten is a big event in your child’s life – and that of your entire family. To help you make the most of the day and enjoy the experience, here are some helpful tips. The night before • Lay out your child’s clothes, shoes and socks. • Make your child’s morning tea and lunch and put it in the fridge. • Help your child pack their school bag. • Pack a spare pair of underpants, socks and a change of clothes. Let your child know these are there in case they have any toilet accidents at school. On the day • Be confident with your child and let them dress themselves as much as possible. • Tie back or plait long hair. • Apply sunscreen and get your child to wear their hat on the way to school. • Don’t forget to take photos. Saying goodbye At first, you might like to stay for a while until your child feels secure at school. When your child has settled into school, a short and reassuring goodbye encourages independence. Let them know who will pick them up at the end of the day, and make sure you or that person picks your child up on time! Getting to and from school safely How you choose to get your child to and from school is your responsibility. Your child’s school wants this to happen safely every day. Pick the safest way to school and practise travelling the route with your child. Talk about how to be a safe road user. Keep our school community safe by: • modelling safe road use to your child • always holding your child's hand when walking on the footpath, through carparks and across the road • using the safest spot to cross the road • never calling your child from across the road • parking legally even if it means being further away and walking the rest of the way to school. Share this information with your child’s carers such as grandparents, nannies and friends who may be taking your child to or from school. education.nsw.gov.au/road-safe-parents. If you need any assistance with any questions about starting Kindergarten in 2020 please see the educators in the Preschool for some advise.

The canteen provides a service to your children, with all profits going back into the school. Without the support of volunteers’ the canteen cannot continue to operate. Only a small amount of your time is needed—3-4 hours weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Currently we open on Wednesday, Thursday, Fridays with the hours 9am—12 noon. Please consider helping in the canteen. It is a great way to see your children at school and you can meet other parents. Please feel free to come to the canteen to see how we operate and to discuss any questions you may have. Julie Coldan Canteen Supervisor
