LAUGHTERIT’S NOT JUST FOR THE COMEDY CLUBS!By CPT William G Thompson, LCSW, BCD, 568th MCGA BHO

Many of you reading this are probably too young to remember the comedy of Abbott and Costello and their routine of “Who’s on rst.” That is exactly what I make myself watch whenever I have a bad day, am not feeling too well or am just having a day when I am not overly excited about being me or with my situation. Even though I have seen it so many times that I almost have the entire routine memorized, it still can make me laugh.

There is a type of depression that is called situational depression. This is a type of depression that is temporary and if dealt with properly should not need medication. The key is you and your willingness to possibly change some bad habits and add new ones. There is a ton of research supporting the positive effects of laughter in one’s life. Along with this is the power to overcome

depression and the negative effects of it on the body. As you may already know, prolonged depression and stress can decrease your immune system, increase euroendocrine hormones—epinephrine, cortisol and dopamine - in one’s body. This makes you more vulnerable to stress, illness, poor sleep and continues to decrease your overall mood.

Laughter, on the other hand, helps to increase the level and activity of T-cells. T-cells are what the body uses to ght infections. Along with increasing T-cells, laughter also increases B-cells which are antibodies that help ght and defeat diseases. Including laughter in your daily routine can help those with certain respiratory ailments and can actually help to improve your cardiac condition! It also helps to relax muscles and improve blood ow.

30

Page 31: Humphreys Happenings - April 2015

The research data just continues to add more and more reasons to use laughter as a tool. It has been discovered that the body is not able to distinguish between real laughter and/or fake laughter. Thus it will have the same biochemical reaction to either. Laughter can be just as effective as anti-depressants and/or anti-anxiety medication. And the best part is that laughter is not addictive but it is contagious. It is so contagious that there are actually laugh yoga classes in the States. No, you do not sit around telling jokes or funny stories and it’s not physically minded like other types of yoga, but it does connect to yoga’s mental and spiritual sense. Much like Lamaze classes teach breathing during child birth, laugh yoga helps to get the diaphragm muscle (the muscle used to breathe) moving and working out and forces you to breathe deeper and healthier. Talking about child birth, which I am told can cause great pain, laughter can actually help to decrease the amount of pain women feel during that time.

Here are some suggestions on how to increase your amount of laughter:

• Share some of life’s embarrassing moments.

• Learn to laugh at yourself and not take yourself so seriously. By doing so, you give others the permission to do the same.

• Take a Master Resiliency Training class; it uses positive psychology to try and nd the humor in (appropriately) bad situations.

• When taking photos during outings with family and/or friends, make some of them light hearted and funny. Then take some of those photos, frame them and place them around you. When you start to feel down you can look at them and remember the time and laugh about it. Even if it is only a giggle, it will be bene cial.

• Observe children (if you don’t have children, watch those around you): they are perfect role models on how to not take life so seriously.

Did you know that most of the world’s most successful people have one thing they say helped on the road to their success? That is to have fun along the way and learn to laugh at your mistakes, learn from them but be able to laugh at yourself.

One last note. Laughter has also been found to be able to improve your relationships. This includes friendship and marriage. Laughter has also been found to improve overall work performance and productivity. It helps to form bonds with loved ones, friends and co-workers. It has been additionally shown to improve problem solving skills. So if you’re stuck in a problem, take a step back and learn to laugh about it and see what happens. What do you have to lose? To reference an old phrase, “laughter - it does a body good!”

drive. She is on the Paci c Teen Panel for Camp Humphreys for the second year in a row.

Academically, Nicole strives to be the best in school, juggling AP classes and sports. By the time you read this article, if Fukuoka Hambaegu hasn’t given me a ‘VIP’ discount, then the good people of Pyeongtaek will have a rare opportunity to see a grown woman do cartwheels in front of Fukuoka Hambaegu, because people – I will do anything for some Hambaegu. I have been there more times than I would like to admit, in just the last two weeks. Fukuoka Hambaegu is AK Plaza’s latest installment on the top restaurant level (7th oor) of the building and my current obsession.

This was dif cult to write about. Mid-article, I ended up at Fukuoka Hambaegu just to… um, do a 7th, I mean, another taste test. Hambagu is the Japanese term for hamburger meat. Fukuoka Hambaegu takes a fun spin on Hambagu by serving up organic, amazing quality Hanwoo beef, which is a Korean domestic high-end beef originating from a European-type cow.

Available in four meal portions: small(100 g); medium (130 g); large (160 g) and extra large (190 g), with prices ranging from KRW 8,400 ~ 18,600, diners can enjoy some choice beef with a side of either egg, shrimp, garlic and cheese, or a combination. Your meal will get served seared or half cooked on a cast iron plate, which you will continue to cook and admire on the hot stone provided to you, also on the plate. Once the stone loses its heat, let the waiter/ess know, they will then reheat the stone, so that you can maintain a perfect sizzling hot temperature throughout your entire meal. Perfection.

Tip One: This place is SUPER popular! If you go there during peak lunch / dinner times, expect to wait a while. Some evenings, they may not have enough space to serve you at all. Unfortunately it is not possible to make reservations here, so to beat the crowd, a friend and I went in at an odd time, just so that we didn’t have to wait, and ended up having the entire restaurant to ourselves. A rare opportunity!

A rare opportunity!

Tip Two: Your meal will be served with a side soup and a cabbage salad to share. I suggest ordering a salad sprout rice (KRW 2,500), which you can mix into a simple yet yummy bimbimbap-style side dish (a Korean mixed rice with soybean paste seasoning) or just order a standard plain bowl of rice (KRW 500).

Tip Three: There is a waitress / hostess that speaks great English and is always on hand to help you gure out how to order and then eat your meal. Also, do not worry, this place has an English menu!

If you haven’t been already, de nitely give Fukuoka Hambaegu a visit soon and if you happen to see me there, don’t judge me. A girl’s gotta’ do what a girl’s gotta’ do.

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scienti c and Cultural Organization) hasdesignated valuable and meaningful sites as UNESCO World Heritages all around the world. They are divided into three categories: World Heritage Convention, Intangible Cultural Heritage and Memory of the World. Intangible Cultural Heritage includes various genres such as music, performance, opera, drama, martial arts and means of hunting as well as traditional heritage and living culture.Because of its possibility of extinction, keeping formless culture and songs alive by passing it down through generations is a beautiful effort.

Korea has 17 Intangible Cultural Heritages that include Pansori Epic Chant (판소리), a kind of storytelling; Kimjang (김장), the process of making kimchi; Gagok (가곡), lyric song cycles accompanied by an orchestra; Falconry, hunting the wild raptors; the Buddhist ceremony Yeongsanjae (영산재)and many types of traditions. A remarkable point is almost ten heritages are related to music. Before the birth of Hangul (한글), not all common people read and wrote. In that sense, music was a very important key to

expressing feeling and overcoming sadness. Two of these traditions, Nongak and Arirang, have been enjoyed by the public for many hundreds of years. They also are some of the most approachable forms of song and entertainment in Korean culture, with the capacity to be performed and enjoyed by a range of individuals.

NongakNongak (농악), also called Pungmul (풍물), is the most recent inheritance nominated for an Intangible Cultural Heritage (2014). Nongak is a kind of community band that includes drumming, dancing and singing.

Most nongak performances are outside with dozens of people performing. Playing an instrument is the central element of it. Each group is led by a kkwaenggwari (꽹과리) player. Kkwaenggwari is a type of percussion, a small round metal gong. Following the kkwaenggwari player are individuals who play a variety of other instruments. The janggu (장구) is a drum played on both sides, each which produce a different pitch. People who play the janggu wrap its fabric holder around their waist. On the other hand, a buk (북),

or barrel-shaped drum, is hand-held, usually lifted above the head. A jing (징) is a large gong rung to keep time. Wind instruments like taepyeongso (태평소) sometimes play along with the drummers. They play a minimum of three tunes continuously. The leader begins to play the kkwaenggwari and slowly move in a circle. Then, the other instrument players gradually follow according to the rhythm of a slow, technical, ancient chant. Once the melody heightens, players run continuously in a circle. Performers who often play the sogo (소고), a very small drum, tend to have more elaborate and dynamic choreography in which they jump, cartwheel and somersault while playing the sogo. Sometimes, dancers jump and turn like acrobats, spinning and ipping their long ribbon hats or sangmo (상모).

People performing wear a variety of colorful costumes. The clothes consist of ve colors: red, black, white, blue and yellow. Red is south, black means north, white refers to the west, blue is east and yellow is the pivot point, collecting other colors. Korea values even the colors of small, attached accessories, such as brooches or strips of fabric; each one of them has a meaning that relates to the balance of direction which plays a key role in human fortune.

Its origin is presumed around 20 BC from a shamanistic farming culture to wish prosperous rain and wind. Historically, people believed that there is a god of rain, wind and sun and people made gods happy and received the rain by playing exciting music. People tried to adjust to the heat by enjoying music and danced to wish for a rich farming year, most notably during severe droughts. When the ceremony was performed, people stopped arduous labor and gathered to share foods. As time goes by, its meaning has changed from that of a ritual ceremony to a lighthearted celebration of fun and dancing. However, marked features, especially melody and the composition of each tune, are slightly different across province and era.

ArirangArirang (아리랑) is a Korean folk song often considered the unof cial national anthem of Korea and designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage. There are many versions according to region; variations include different beats, rhythm, lyrics and melody. Jindo (진도) and Miryang (밀양) Arirang are the most famous versions known to Koreans, but they have different attributes. In all versions, though,

the lyrics of these songs all have same background: ‘Arirang Pass (아리랑 고개).’ A long time ago, there was a woman who had a paramour, and he went off far away, leaving a precarious promise that he would come back again to the woman. She missed him every day after his departure until he appeared in a dream standing on the mountain pass, ‘Arirang Gogae’, outside of Seoul. Arirang was so rugged that travelers couldn’t easily venture through. People believed that once someone crossed the pass Arirang, it meant never coming back. Because he revealed himself to her at the pass, she was convinced that he would never come back to her side. So, she sang the mournful story that has become Arirang. Korea has a lot of unnamed passes, so, over the years, in honor of the song and story, people who experienced long goodbyes renamed many of the mountain passes in Korea Arirang. Arirang is estimated to be approximately 700 years old, because the rst description of this song, the Jeongsun version, was noted in the Korea Dynasty Public Annals around that time. It wasn’t until about 120 years ago that it was written as a song on sheet music. Various versions of Arirang, such as Miryang, Jindo and Jungsun, were written onto sheet music as well. Before that, people sang different versions according to their region, but couldn’t recognize the many variations of it. After the publication of sheet music, any Korean could sing each version regardless of the region they were born in.

Through these two kinds of music, we can feel the emotion, sadness and wishes that the people performing them in those periods felt. Not only through this music, but also other genres of public music, we can discover other individuals’ sadness, happiness, desire and enjoy. In that respect, Korean music has always been a key in explaining the lives of the people living during the time it was developed.
