Hunting News 9 It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 9th newsletter of our 2016 hunting

season Our last newsletter will follow in the next couple of weeks

We have nished hunting for the year but we still have some really great hunts to report on

that took place

We are getting more and more excited for our trip to the USA next year and we hope to see

you there Please nd our 2017 Show Schedule at the bottom of this newsletter

Dan McMahon and Friends Join Us on Safari We were really excited to welcome our friends Dan McMahon Jerry Bubba and Gino Bubba

to South Africa for a great plains game hunt Dan and Jerry have visited us before and we

were really excited to have Gino here as well We met these great guys through our booking

agent Butch Jerry owns Pizza Joes in Nazareth Pennsylvania - Drom and the guys

favourite pizza stop in the States

We were a mix of seasoned veterans and rst timers with Somerby and the Dark

Continent After a relaxing night at the Elephant Lodge to recover from the brutal ight we

woke up early and departed for the hunt I had the privilege of hunting with my best friend

Jerry Bubba as we had decided that since this was our second trip and we basically had

the same hit list it would be twice as much fun together We sighted in our guns which

were my Ruger M77 Hawkeye 338 and Jerrys Remington 300 Mag Jerry was rst up and

put a beautiful 150 yard shot on his Kalahari springbuk

Within an hour we were on the hunt for some sables and again the property provided and

Jerry and I taketh away We both harvested beautiful sables I put an extremely short stalk

on my Sable (10 feet) as he decided to run out onto the dirt road and stare me down Jerry

shot his at a distance of 150 yards

Well done on these great trophies guys



We continued to hunt this property for four more days and our friend Gino who was

previously bow hunting joined in on the fun We all harvested beautiful red hartebeests

At the next hunting area we started out hunting two lechwes Both shots were well over

250 yards I was fortunate enough to nick the lower portion of his lungs and dropped mine

After a few shots and some great tracking by Ratel Andrersquos dog we recovered Jerryrsquos

Both of them very high quality Next up were the nyalas where both the Ruger and

Remington did their jobs and the nyalas were harvested with kill shots under 100 yards



We returned the following day to hunt black springbuck Tough animals to hunt as they are

extremely skittish and truth be told with the high winds and 250 yard plus shots we both

missed but accomplished the mission after some nice PH work by Andre

In the Free State Gino Jerry and I set off on a night hunt looking for duikers and

steenbuck for Gino We came across a few porcupines and Jerry took out two monsters - I

had the honour of taking out the third Somerby delivered as always with three great

duikers for each of us and a steenbuck for Gino The night was not complete until we put a

search on for a mountain reedbuck Drom Andre and TJ were again up for the challenge

and put me on a nice one and it was either put a good shot on it or donrsquot bother coming

home A double lung shot at 100 yards did the trick and the reedbuck joined the others in



preparing for the long journey to their nal resting places our trophy rooms Throw in some

great bird hunting and our trip was complete

to have you guys here again and to host Gino for the rst time Looking forward to having

you guys here again in 2020

Earl and Jack visit with Somerby We were really happy to see our very good friend Earl Wismer again for another great hunt

We met Earl through our booking agent and friend Butch Earl is from Pennsylvania and he

was joined by Jack Smith also from The Keystone State Earl has been to hunt with us

several times and we have also had Jack over before for a hunt

Earl and PH Janneman enjoy a cold one - with a view

Earl brought with his Heym 450400 and Weatherby 338 Winmag He was here to hunt

buffalo which he did with great success Earl also took down a beautiful zebra

Well done on your great trophies Earl



A little birdie told us that Earls daughter Kristen is expecting Congratulations Grandpa

May the little tyke bring you much joy



Jack went on a massive hunt for a large variety of plains game He was very successful

and harvested some truly outstanding trophies

Jack took down zebra an eland a blue wildebeest and a red hartebeest

Jack also took down a gemsbuck springbuck kudu and waterbuck Please see below

some of his great trophies The gemsbuck in particular is a real beauty

Grover Redford Takes a Buffalo We met Grover through our good friend Ray Schiltz and we were so thrilled that he was

joining us on a hunting safari Grover shot some excellent plains game and also took down

a wonderful buffalo Please enjoy Grovers own account of the hunt

The bushbuck hunt was most exciting We spent two nights trying for one On the second

night we started driving around the alfalfa eld At the far end PD spotted a bushbuck He

said There he is do you see him I looked and looked through the scope Then I saw

him PD said Shoot him on the shoulder Do you see him Yes I do BANG He was

down PD went to check and the buck was dead One shot I was shaking I was so excited



Next up was Grovers buffalo

The other bakkie driver spotted 6 buffalo and the chase was on They went into the bush

and we got out to stalk them and see which one we wanted They broke from cover We

saw where they headed and circled around and started stalking them again They broke

cover and were off Louis was driving and chasing them at speeds more than 60 kmhr PD

the others and I were on the back of the bakkie hanging on I was leaning over the side with

my rie loaded and they were running at out beside us It was like Wild Bill Cody chasing

American Bison on horseback I did not take the shot We had to veer to the right and the

Buffalo went left Finally they went into the bush again We circled the bush again and

slowly watched for the one we wanted They split up in the bush and we spotted the one

we wanted PD said There he is Can see him He is facing us I nally saw where to shoot

him BOOM He went down with a shot to the lungs and spine We got out of the bakkie

and slowly approached him PD said Put a shot through the heart I did He was dead and

everyone started to congratulate me I was drained of adrenaline and could hardly stand

up

Grover also took down a nyala waterbuck warthog and impala

Shaffer Honeymoon Safari We were very excited to have Mark and Melissa Shaffer come over to Africa for their

honeymoon We met Mark at the show in Harrisburg in 2015 and it was an absolute

pleasure to help the lovely couple in celebrating their union Congratulations Mark and

Melissa - we wish you many years of happiness together

Mark harvested some really outstanding trophies while on safari Mark hunts with a bow

and he did a really great job taking down these splendid animals He took a kudu impala

gemsbuck blue wildebeest nyala and zebra

Thank you Mark and Melissa for choosing us to host you on this very special trip We

hope to see you in Harrisburg next year

Bennion Family Holiday It was a privilege to welcome the Bennion family to South Africa on their rst ever trip out

of the USA What an adventurous family making the Dark Continent the destination

Jerry and Kathi brought over their daughter Sunny a novice hunter for a great hunt and all



round African experience

Jerry Kathi and Sunny each sent us a report on what they found the most special during

the hunt Please enjoy

The Bennions at the Elephant Lodge

Jerry - Kudu

We spotted four bulls in the distance which spotted us also There were some nice bulls

there We looked for them in the direction we thought they would have traveled with no

luck but found another small herd which took off down a ravine We hiked down the ravine

to relocate that herd with no luck My wife daughter and Joram (Somerby skinner and

tracker) met us on the other side of the ravine They had seen the four bulls again We took

to hunting for them again Spotted the herd and waited and waited for the bull I wanted to

turn I took the shot with my Savage 308 with 150 triple shot bullets I reloaded at about

290 yards It was a good shot and the tracking was on After tracking there he was in the

brush with no ground shrinkage I couldnt believe it My lifelong dream had been fullled

with the help of Andre and Joram I was so overwhelmed with joy disbelief and dream

fulllment Thank you Andre and Joram

In total I got the kudu blue wildebeest impala warthog zebra gemsbuck duiker porcupine

and 102 doves Amazing

Kathi - Eland

I wasnt originally hunting for eland but when out hunting for my black wildebeest I kept

seeing an enormous eland My husband Andre and myself kept joking I should hunt him

but that wasnt what I was after With no luck on the black wildebeest yet we went in for

lunch and my husband and I discussed maybe I should go for the eland

The next morning at around noon there he was We went for the stalk and all of a sudden

there he was and we froze in our steps It seemed like we stood still for an hour trying to

barely move every now and then into cover The eland spooked for some reason and ran

about 100 yards and stopped again After watching him another 15 minutes or so waiting

for a good shot he quartered enough that I shot in front of the shoulder That was the most

amazing hunt and stalk I have ever experienced Thank you Andre

In total I had an eland red hartebeest impala and a duiker



Sunny - Blesbuck

Jerry spotted some blesbuck in the distance We started working across the terrain on

foot Stopping going and glassing for probably a half mile or more Then Andre put up the

shooting sticks and said this would be a good shot for me It would be my rst animal ever

and I was nervous After I was assured by Andre it would be ok and by my mom and dad I

moved up by Andre Andre helped me get steady on the sticks and I shot I shot my dads

Savage 308 with 150 triple shock bullets It was a great shot and my blesbuck went right

down Thank you Andre In total I got the blesbuck and two duikers

In between hunting the Bennions enjoyed some sight-seeing The family visited the

elephant and cheetah sanctuaries and the cultural village They also went for an awesome

horse-back ride in the beautiful Free State mountains

We would like to say a big thank you to the Bennions for choosing us to host them on

such an unknown adventure We had such a great time with you and hope to see you

again very soon

The Moricis Hunt Plains Game with Somerby We met Mark Morici and his wife Cheryl through our good friend Lee McCanna a few years

back They are seasoned safari-goers and it was really a privilege that they chose us to

host them this year Mark brought his brother Matt along for the hunt and the two did a

really outstanding job Cheryl joined the guys out in the eld and played photographer

Mark took all of his shots with a 300 WSM which he says was denitely enough gun for all

of the animals on his list Mark was kind enough to send us an account of his kudu hunt

Charlie and the trackers were amazing in nding the animals taken The kudu was the

most serendipitous animal I have ever taken Questions asked and answers given in nding

this magnicent animal were amazing We passed on the kudu by mistake Charlie was

looking at a different bull than we were We went back to the camp to pick up glasses for

my brother and I asked Charlie how big he thought the bull was that we passed up He said

very small and we realised we were looking at different bulls We rushed out to the same

spot and found the amazing bull that we took The kudu of a lifetime Many thanks

Mark also took a zebra bushbuck and impala



Marks brother Matt also took some great trophies He took an impala duiker klipspringer

steenbuck and blesbuck
