CJ and Alice Merriman visit Africa and spread somelove

Our good friends CJ and Alice are from Lapeer Michigan It was their fourth trip with us and the hunttook place in the Western Cape

They joined us in Africa in March of this year for a hunt and to do some charitable work CJ andAlice visited with and delivered supplies through the Safari Club Blue Bag programme to local childrenwho have very little Read more about this programme here if you would like to get involved

But without further ado onto the hunt CJs account of his hunt with PH Charles follows

For [the first] hunt Willy the property manager loaned me his 300 WSM with a suppressor and a bishypod It was a great weapon The morning was bright and sunny and a perfect day to go after Lechwe After scouting for several hourswe spotted the one that we wanted but it darted into the bush and we lost track of it The decision wasmade to change tactics and go after Blesbok so again off we went On the trail of Blesbok we happenedupon the Lechwe that had earlier eluded us Charles and I began a stalk of several hundred yards circlingaround to keep the wind advantage At about 136 yards the rifle did its job and the Lechwe was ours

The next day we again went after Blesbuck and about midshymorning came across a group in an open areaseveral hundred yards away Charles and I were able to stalk to about 164 yards and get set for a shot About the time we got settled everything scattered We were sure the animals had not spotted us anddidnt know what had spooked them We learned later that a fellow riding a motorbike on a nearby roadhad lost control and run into a ditch The noise from the commotion that followed had scared the animalsshy talk about crummy timing Later that afternoon we found the trophy we wanted After a short stalk the300 WSM again did its job and a fine Blesbuck joined the Lechwe

Alice chose to join them on the truck one afternoon and together they enjoyed seeing manyanimals A Common Reed buck was on the agenda and late one afternoon they were able to

add an excellent specimen to the trophy list

Charles shared that there were some superior quality Eastern Cape Greater Kudu in the area so wedecided to go for one We decided to get an early start and in the higher altitudes it was quite chilly so wewere happy when the sun finally was high enough to offer us some warmth About midshymorning wespotted an excellent specimen high on a hill His location offered us no hope of a shot so we began walkinghoping to find an opportunity to take this magnificent animal It was not to be as the Kudu moved off in a

different direction Later that afternoon we explored another part of the property and suddenly anoutstanding Kudu appeared The 300 WSM true to character put the Kudu on the ground with one shotfrom about 250 meters This Kudu measuring 53 inches was even better than the one we had seen in themorning What an incredible ending to a magnificent hunt Charles and Willy had made it possible for meto take four excellent trophies

After the hunt CJ and Alice embarked on their charitable endeavour First was a visit to Huis Triomf inthe nearby town of Oudtshoorn This is a home for up to 30 boys between 8 and 18 who for some reasonhave been separated from their families While the home is operated by very caring staff and teachersthere simply isnt enough funding to come close to providing for their needs One of their basic needs wasfor a washer and dryer CJ and Alice concluded that such a project was doable and were able to transfer thefunds well in advance of their trip The purpose of their visit was to ensure that all was well with thewasher and dryer and to take something for each child

Brian Crady Makes a Killing

Brian Crady from Colorado joined us for a hunting safari after being the highest bidder for a 7 day tripthrough Aurthurdale Heritage Inc with John Fullmer We were thrilled to host him here with us earlierthis year and it with pleasure that we share his hunting account with you

For all of the animals I shot I used PDs 30shy06 in a 180 grain bullet My first animal I shot was a bluewildebeest at 200 yards It is a very strong animal and this was my first South African harvest It was easyto locate although it took four shots to bring it down The first shot was just below the heart and tookout both front shoulders and therefore the tracking was easy as he stayed in the same location

The second animal was a Kudu We had spent half the day looking for mature bulls and hoped that sinceit was the rut they would be with females although all we found that day was young bulls

Day two in the morning had us back at it and we found the bull I harvested We found him early in themorning with a large group of cows but this did not make the hunt easy It is amazing how they disappearin the thick cover We found him twice and both times there was no shot given the thick brush aroundhim Once they moved we were able to continue to follow and given the large herd picking him out in theticket was not easy However Frans seemed to have eyes for this bull and could find him quickly The finalapproach had the bull by himself under a large tree and the cows off to his right He stood broadside at 120yards off went the 30shy06 and he took two steps and dropped Tracking is easy when you see them drop Itis an amazing animal and was a wonderful hunt 48 inches shy I am very happy

The third animal was an impala We drove around until we found a nice male but he would move into

thicket and away he went We moved around and glasses and glassed to finally come upon a herd of about15 females and a really nice male He presented a broadside and I moved into position and away he wentYou must be quick on the gun in Africa as animals do not wait We came in at a different angle and heardhorns coming together so we assumed he was fighting with another male As we approached he was out at100 yards and I fired and I heard the bullet hit I hit a bit back from the sweet spot although we recoveredhim about 60 yards from where we was standing Very pleased with him as he measured 23 inches

Whilst searching for gemsbuck we found a blesbuck which was also on my list We found a huge herd andmy PH (PD) looked them over and found the bull I should take The shot was long and although I felt verycomfortable and shot there was no reaction from the bull As we looked the bull over we noticed a smallred spot below his belly and knew then that I had injured him If you have ever injured an animal youknow the feeling I am going to express shy stomach ache and disappointment PD again felt confident wewould find him the next day as it was beginning to get dark As we talked that night over a few cold onesthe shot felt great although where the bullet hit did not make sense We began the next day at the range tofind out we needed to reshysite in his gun as the bullet was dropping and moving to the right Once we had itat zero at 100 and knew without question where it would be at 200 and 300 yards we headed to breakfastand then to the field to find this blesbuck Amazingly we found him in and among three very largeherds Finally after about an hour of trying to get into position we found the shot and took him down atabout 130 yards He moved up the hill about 30 yards and down he went

We next pursued a gemsbuck and saw five of them moving through thicket stopping for short spells itwas not easy to spot the bull in a good shot area We moved with them as they moved out of the basin intoanother open area Slowing closing the distance and trying to watch what they were going to do we closedto about 350 yards The bull stood broadside and my PH said put the cross hairs at 8 inches above hisshoulder I settled in and squeezed off the round and expected him to jump but did not see or hearanything PD and I looked at each other in question and noticed right above his back straight up from thefront shoulder was a small stream of blood We aimed to high and if I had aimed at his shoulder that bulletwould have dropped right in the wheel house Up the hill he went and stopped to skyline himself Not asafe shot so as we went around to the other side we ran shy yes ran shy up a hill I am in really good shape butit felt like my heart was going to come out of my chest PD peaked over the hill as I stood back and hemotioned that the bull was right below us We moved across the hill to get a better angle and I laid downwith a backpack as a rest and could see the bull with a cow He was standing quartering to my rightKnowing where the bullet would come out the other side I placed the cross hairs back on his right side and

Angelo Brewer Makes a Quick Stop with Somerby

Angelo joined us for a microshyhunt earlier this year He was in Johannesburg for a hunting expo HuntExwhere he exhibited for his company FLIR Night Vision Optics Angelos safari started the morning of

Monday April 19th The hunters headed north out of Johannesburg Angelo had wanted a Kudu from thefirst time he ever laid eyes on one shy he now had 2 days of hunting to make it happen Here follows Angelosaccount of his hunt

We traveled around for a while passing two smaller Kudu bulls and then we found what we had beenlooking for The old bull was with a herd of cows and very cautious never presenting a shot Once we gotclose the entire group would take off running and the chase resumed After a few hours of cat and mousewe found the group once more and they took off once more this time over a lowshyfence and across a largecattle pasture At 1100 meters I watched my bull stop turn broadside and give a display I will never forgetpromptly followed by jumping over one more fence and disappearing into the bush

My heart sank I confirmed with PD that that was a great mature bull and we proceeded to make the mostof our last bit of hunting light

Everything that I had ever read about hunting Kudu was happening Trees and branches started to looklike Kudu When we had found the herd the Grey Ghost would disappear into the bush I wondered if Iwould indeed get a chance on this trip On our way back to camp we found the group once again I wasfinally faced with a chance at this great bull The old boy was standing 75 meters away his chest towardsme doing his best to disappear into the surroundings Not this time

After taking this wonderful animal I was speechless a very real dream come true After absorbing thegravity of the moment and enjoying the beauty of the hunt we took a few pictures and then loaded the bullinto the truck It was at this moment that I truly realized the size and age of this animal a true trophy andan amazing experience

We settled on going after a Blue Wildebeest and Blesbuck the next day

Midshymorning on the second day we found a nice Blesbuck that exceeded my expectations a true trophyin my eyes After a few hours of perusing a large group of wildebeest and zebra we settled on a beautifulold bull At close to 100 meters and a quartering shot that was placed almost perfectly I learned just howtough these animals can be After what seemed like forever and a track of 250 meters with no blood I wasgreeted with an amazing animal Old textured horns full of character and an amazing brindle coat Icouldnrsquot be happier

Midshyafternoon on my second day I had pulled the trigger three times and had three amazing animalsand uncountable memories
