James opened the gig, and Linda served up his favorite banana pudding at intermission to help us all celebrate James’ birthday. The opener was filled out by Linda singing a solo, and James’ daughters singing two a Capella tunes, including a lovely rendition of The Parting Glass. Something about those sister harmonies! Making plans for a music-filled warm-weather season...

Dear Friends,

Summer is upon us. Not yet the hot-and-humid stay indoors in the air-conditioning part of summer, but the earlier friendlier part. At night we hear the neighborhood kids outside our open windows celebrating being out of school. I expect their teachers are also celebrating the same thing. Even the older folks who constitute most of HTMA’s membership can find things to celebrate this time of year. Fresh fruits and vegetables appearing at the farmers’ markets come to mind for me.

The HTMA coffeehouse series is continuing strong. Performance chair Ken Winchester is doing a terrific job booking fresh talent for our shows. This past week we enjoyed a great performance by Danika Holmes and Jeb Hart. Danika is a talented singer/songwriter, and Jeb is an amazing guitar player. I think everyone at the old church had a good time, made better by James Smith’s sister Linda.

MUSICAL NOTES - by Jerry LeCroy

Summertime ... a time to surf some new musical waves?

- 3 -

Keep playing music, and keep laughing

Jerry LeCroy

For our family, summer is often a time to plan and execute home projects. We have a few new things going on – getting back in to scuba diving, doing some more home improvements. And I really want to get serious about stretching some musical muscles. It’s so easy to stick with the tunes we wrote or learned years ago, play them the same old comfortable way, no hard work and no risk.

I am determined to work on some new songs, even though it’s always a struggle for me. Even picking songs to learn takes time – I may listen to a hundred songs to find just two that I think I want to play. And then working out an arrangement that fits within my limitations takes more work. Once I get officially retired I plan to go back to school, in a sense. I want to sign up for regular music lessons. Can this fat old geezer still learn some new licks? I don’t know, but I’m willing to find out.

What are your plans in the musical universe? Going to see some shows, pick up some new music, maybe look for a new instrument? That’s all pretty fun.

After the coffeehouse show, Danika Holmes asked me if I might recommend other venues in Huntsville where she might be able to put on a concert. When George Williams, Danny Charles and I talked about that after the show, I realized that the acoustic music opportunities in Huntsville are so much better than they were just a few years ago.

Between the Flying Monkey, Jim Parkers songwriter features, Danny Davis’ Tangled String Studio, and the new microbrewery venues, there seem to be a lot more opportunities to listen to or play music in Huntsville. I think that is a great development. We all need to get out more and take advantage of the opportunities that the expanding musical environment in Huntsville is offering us. I’m planning to begin getting out more, and I hope you are, too.

If you are thinking about getting out to hear more music, please don’t forget the HTMA coffeehouse series. We are putting on some pretty serious talent in a really intimate listening environment with great acoustics. Lately our audiences have been smaller than I think the artists deserve. Okay, Thursday night isn’t the most convenient, but I guarantee that if you come out to a concert you will be glad you came. Go ahead – put that next show on your calendar and plan to come out and have a great time. It’s a lovely way to spend a summer evening – for more fun than staying at home, watching TV or surfing the net.

EDWARD R. MURROW & RADIO

Our world is ever-changing. Today millions of people in London can instantly inform billions of people across the earth of current events in that city and project pictures proving what they report. It was not that way in September and October 1940 when the German planes, with pay-loads of death and destruction, made their nightly calls on that great city.

For fifty-seven consecutive nights, the bombs fell on London. Trying to hide from this rain-of-death London was “blacked-out,” and would remain blacked-out for five years. (Julie Andrews was eight when the lights were turned on again, she had no memory of seeing the city lights before.)

Each night as the bombs rained down Edward Murrow, an American news reporter, stood on top of the BBC building using shortwave radio with all its sputter and static, telling the American public what he saw and heard. His broadcasts began: “This—is London…”

Murrow then reported to America what he saw and heard. Nightly one would hear him say such things as: “I think probably in a minute we shall hear the sound of guns in the immediate vicinity. The search lights are swinging over in this general direction now. I saw two great flashes of light off to my left. Soon, you’ll hear two explosions. There they are…Earlier this evening we heard a number of bombs go sliding and slithering across, to fall several blocks away. The searchlights are now feeling almost directly overhead. Now you’ll hear two bursts a little nearer in a moment. There they are…”

The American public sat by their short-wave receivers, listening as Murrow brought the war to them. Three times the bombs destroyed his London office. Each time he improvised and found a way to bring the war closer to the American public.

Morrow and his transmitter followed the war in Europe, moving as the fighting front moved. Americans, many with sons, daughters, and spouses standing in harm’s way, stayed close to their radios. Friends, neighbors, even strangers, without a radio, were made welcome to homes of those who nightly listened for the voice of Murrow.

On April 25, 1945, Murrow reported: “Permit me to tell you what you would have seen and heard had you been with me Thursday. If you are having dinner or easily upset, you may want to turn you radio off. Murder has been done at Buchenwald. How many boys and men have been put to death only God knows.”

As he had done so many times before, Edward R. Murrow closed that broadcast saying, “So long—and good luck.”

Americans then turned off their radios and waited for Murrow’s voice the next day. Meanwhile, they prayed for good luck.
