Hurstbourne Highlights

Are you very good at waiting on God? I must admit that I typically am not. In some reading this past week, an author

shared that the reality of waiting is an expression of God’s good-ness. It isn’t about God forgetting us, forsaking us, or being unfaithful to his promises. It’s actually God giving us time to consider his glo-ry and to grow stronger in our faith. Waiting isn’t just about what we are hoping for at the end of the wait, but also about who we will become as we wait. God is wise and loving. His tim-ing is always perfect. His focus isn’t so much on what we will ex-perience and enjoy, but on who we will become. He is committed

to using every tool at his disposal to rescue us from ourselves and to shape us into the likeness of his Son. Waiting is one of his pri-mary shaping tools. So, how do we “build” spiritual muscle during the wait? We must commit ourselves to resisting those habits of unfaith and with discipline, pursue rigorous spiritu-al exercise through: the study of God’s Word, consistent godly fel-lowship, looking for God’s glory in creation every day, putting our-selves under excellent preaching and teaching of Scripture, in-vesting our quiet mental time in mediation on the goodness of God, reading excellent Christian books, and spending as much time as humanly possible in pray-er.

That They May Know

This coming Sunday night will mark one of the best opportunities that our church has, in the calendar year, to reach out to our neighbors. G3, our Hallow-een outreach, will bring

dozens of our neighborhood families to our church campus. It’s an event that our community and our church look for-ward to each fall because it is a lot of fun! But let’s make sure that in the midst of the candy and the costumes, that we don’t forget our real reason for being out in our parking lot. Our desire is to build relationships with individuals in our com-munity so that we can eventually influ-ence them for Christ. We hope everyone has an absolute blast, but we can’t be content to just exchange quick pleasant-ries with people. One burden that I have on my heart is that our church family will sense the need to go deeper- that G3 won’t be an end in itself and that Sunday night will serve as a spark, a starting point, for net-works of new relationships. So in the midst of the upcoming hus-tle and bustle, I want to challenge our people to slow down and take time to genuinely engage the folks that God sends our way. Here are a few ways to

do just that: 1. Ask the Lord to lead you to the individ-ual or family he has prepared for you to speak with. How exciting would it be if every G3 participant determined to prayerfully engage one individual or fam-ily with gospel intentionality?! 2. Take time to have a genuine conversa-tion with that person or family. Ask open-ended questions and take time to learn their story. 3. If God blesses you with good conver-sation and a budding friendship, work to follow-up. Exchange contact information and arrange for a time to have coffee or lunch. In particular, South Asian families enjoy sharing meals. 4. Invite AND accompany an individual to a worship service at our church. I have found that when you simply invite an individual to church that you rarely see them in a worship gathering. But if you make it a point to invite them and then plan a specific time to meet them to help get acclimated to our building, then would-be guests are much more likely to attend. You could arrange to meet at the welcome center prior to Sunday School or morning worship, or you could even plan to meet at a specified location in our community and then carpool to our building. Let’s trust God together for gospel impact on Sunday night!

Periodically I like to share with you the Top 25 Songs that Christian Cop-yright Licensing Incorpo-rated reports that churches all over the United States are using in

worship during the last 6 month re-porting period. Look over them and see how many you recognize as songs that we have used in our worship services at Hurstbourne Baptist. - 10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord) - Our God - One Thing Remains (Your Love Never Fails) - Forever Reign - How Great Is Our God - Cornerstone - Mighty to Save - Lord I Need You - Revelation Song - Oceans (Where Feet May Fall) - Blessed Be Your Name - Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) - Here I Am to Worship

- In Christ Alone - Everlasting God - How He Loves - Your Grace is Enough - Whom Shall I Fear God Of Angel Armies - The Stand - This is Amazing Grace - Jesus Messiah - How Great Thou Art - Forever - From The Inside Out - God Is Able

It is good for me as I look over this list to realize that we have or are using most of these songs in our worship ser-vices, just like many other congregations of Christians that gather to worship each week in our nation. Let us thank God for the men and women that are blessed with the gifts of music composition, setting scripture passages and spiritual themes to music so that we can use to join together in worshipping the Al-mighty God.

Chris’ Notes

Chris Kihn

Trust in the Lord and do what is good; dwell in the land and live secure-ly. Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s de-sires. (Ps.37:3-4 HCSB)

As a young Christian, I liked to think about Psalm 37:4, because that verse talked about the fulfill-ment of my heart’s desires if I kept my focus on the Lord. I had desires that I wanted to see fulfilled! Look-ing back though, I wonder how much of my focus was on getting “my heart’s desires,” instead of taking “delight in the Lord.” But our heavenly Father has a way of teaching us lessons that we don’t intend to learn. We usually start off thinking that our desires and personal fulfillment are the

most important things in life. Somewhere along the way, though, if we keep following Christ, we’ll get turned around and realize that what we really desire is God him-self. We might not even realize when that change happened. But we’ll notice that with increasing frequency, we’ll turn away from things that keep us from delighting in the Lord, even if those things once gave us pleasure or personal gain. The Lord has become our heart’s desire, and we want noth-ing else to compete with him. Have you learned this lesson from the Father? How close are you to wanting God above all your other desires? And are you walking with God today, delighting in him in all you are doing?
