Hurstville City Council recently unveiled its 2013- 2014 Operational Plan, that will deliver a number of major projects as identified by the community in the Community Strategic Plan 2021. The Plan focuses on maintaining and renewing basic assets such as roads, footpaths, parks and playgrounds. To this end, $1.3 million in works will be carried out under the Infrastructure Plus program over the next 12 months. Other highlights include improving Gannons Park and the construction of a multi-purpose community centre in Jubilee Park, Mortdale. Council is currently working on the plans for a new multi-purpose community centre at Jubilee Park in Mortdale. This facility will give the community a place to meet and take part in a wide range of community activities. In addition to the new centre, there will also be a car park (32 spaces), and improvements to the open recreational space including barbeque facilities, public toilets, a children’s playground and walking track for the site. It is anticipated that building works on the multi-purpose centre will commence in the first half of 2014. Building for our future: update on Council’s major projects Mayor’s message As another year draws to a close, I would like to recognise the great work which has been achieved over the past 12 months, and applaud the efforts of the community, volunteers and Council staff who made it all happen. Looking ahead into 2014, Council will re-sheet seven roads, top dress and or resurface eight sporting fields, replace three children’s playgrounds; undertake repairs to kerbs and gutters; upgrade floodlighting in Gannons Park, and construct new toilets in Evatt Park. In addition, a number of large projects will also get underway. Residents are reminded that Hurstville City Council’s waste services will be carried out as usual during the Christmas and New Year public holidays.

Household Clean Up bookings will not be available between Monday, 23 December 2013 to Friday, 3 January 2014.

Council’s E-Waste Collection site will be closed from Monday, 23 December 2013 to Friday, 17 January 2014.

With the summer months almost here, the time has come to make sure you, your family and home are prepared for the bushfire season.

The peak bushfire period is between October and March every year, when no burning off is allowed without authorisation. Before you start burning off in your backyard to reduce bushfire hazards you will need to obtain an Environmental Approval – Bush Fire Hazard Reduction from your local fire station, along with the necessary Fire Permit.

NSW legislation currently states that bushfire management and bushfire

mitigation fall with the jurisdiction of NSW Rural Fire Services and NSW Fire and Rescue. This means Council is not permitted to undertake any back-burning activities. However, Council frequently carries out manual hazard reductions in various areas through the local government area.

The NSW Rural Fire Service provides a household Assessment Tool to help you establish your household’s level of risk from bushfire and a Survival Plan template for you to complete, to ensure you know what to do in the event of a fire.

New exhibition to uncover local history

Want to download that latest song you love? Well, check out ‘Freegal’ on Hurstville City Library, Museum & Gallery’s website. Library members have free access to the Sony catalogue of music releases.

Library members can download and keep three tracks a week from the Sony Music catalogue. Freegal is the first library music service to offer the music as MP3s that don’t have DRM copy-protection schemes, which means users can listen to them on multiple devices.

All you need to access it is your library borrower card number and your PIN. Freegal offers hundreds of thousands of songs, over 100 genres of music, and more than 50 record labels, all without having to download any software.

Free music at Hurstville City LibraryTo mark this occasion, the Museum

& Gallery will host a special exhibition about the history of the Tudor-style building. The exhibition, titled; “If these walls could talk: Stories from 14 MacMahon Street” will be on display from 18 January to 11 May 2014.

The exhibition will explore the many different purposes the building has had over the years including its use as residence, doctor’s practice, rugby club, theatre restaurant, function centre and gallery.

Interestingly, many local residents still recall attending Dr Crakanthorp’s practice, or attending a fabulous wedding celebration held at one of the restaurants or function centres, such as MacMahon’s Manor.

If these walls could talk: Stories from 14 MacMahon Street also captures personal memories of former tenants and members of the community, photographs, and interesting objects that will help to uncover the many stories of the building.

In 2014, Hurstville Museum & Gallery is celebrating its 10th anniversary of residing at 14 MacMahon Street, Hurstville.
