Last Time Out Washington competed in the Pac-10 Championships on May 17 at Lake Natoma in Rancho Cordova, Calif. The crews faced temperatures in the low-100s and blazing sun at race time. All four women’s crews raced well in the morning heats, with each boat qualifying for the afternoon’s grand finals. Washington’s novices smoked the competition, taking an open water victory over the field of six boats. The Husky novice eight was the only gold medal-winning performance of the day on the women’s side. Washington’s newly-minted varsity four and second varsity eight each took home bronze, rounding out the podium appearances for the Dawgs. The varsity eight turned in a solid race, but was edged out of medal position by Oregon State. As a team, the Huskies placed third in the conference, improving on last year’s fourth-place finish. Huskies in the NCAA Championships The Huskies are one of just three teams nationwide to be invited to all 13 NCAA Championship regattas ever held, and the only west coast crew to achieve that feat. (Princeton and Brown are the other two.) Washington has won three NCAA team championships, including back-to-back titles in 1997 and 1998. The Huskies’ last team championship came in 2001, with a varsity eight lineup that included three even- tual Olympians (Rika Geyser and 2008 gold medalists Anna (Mickelson) Cummins and Mary Whipple) and current novice coach Nicole (Borges) Minett. Washington has won the varsity eight championship four times (1997, 1998, 2001 and 2002), the second varsity eight once (2002) and the varsity four four times (1999, 2000, 2001 and 2008). Last year, the Huskies nearly didn’t make the cut for the NCAA Championships after finishing a disap- pointing fourth at the Pac-10 Championships. Washington overcame low expectations and shocked the field by winning the national title in the varsity four and earning bronze in the second varsity eight. The Huskies came home to Seattle toting the second-place team trophy, a significant feat for a crew ranked 14th entering the championship regatta. The Women’s Field Sixteen teams were invited to the 2009 edition of the NCAA Division I Rowing Championships. This is a format change from prior years in which 12 teams and four at-large varsity eights were invited. The 2009 field consists of No. 10 Brown, No. 2 California, No. 12 Clemson, No. 15 Dartmouth, No. 6 Harvard, No. 5 Michigan, No. 7 Michigan State, No. 14 Ohio State, No. 11 Oregon State, No. 8 Princeton, No. 16 USC, No. 1 Stanford, No. 4 Virginia, No. 13 Washington, No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 3 Yale. Brown, Princeton and Washington are the only three teams in NCAA history to be invited to all 13 NCAA championship regattas. Brown is the two-time defending national champion and has won seven total NCAA championships. In fact, Brown, Washington and California have dominated the NCAA regatta, with one of the three winning all but one team championship in history. Washington has claimed three team titles, Brown seven and California two. Harvard played the spoiler in 2003, winning the team trophy by a margin of just two points over Brown. Yale enters the championship as the 2009 Eastern Sprints varsity eight champion. Radcliffe and Princeton finished second and third, respectively, with Brown coming in fourth. Less than two seconds separated first through third places. Virginia comes to the Cooper River as the Aramark South/Central Sprints champion in the varsity eight. The Cavaliers finished the race in 6:03.20, almost three seconds faster than second-place Michigan and over four seconds faster than third-place Michigan State.
