Prynhawn Da a Croeso Cynnes, A very good afternoon and warm welcome to all Holyhead
Hotspur supporters and likewise to the Players, Officials and followers of our visitors
Caernarfon Town who are our opponents for this always much anticipated Huws Gray
Alliance fixture.
Games between the two towns are legendary of course going back to the pioneering days of
the game in North Wales in the late 19th century with always a keen rivalry between the
sides including many memorable encounters the post second world war era attracting huge
crowds on Good Friday and Easter Monday. Holyhead then represented by Holyhead Town
always known as the Harbourmen, while Caernarfon always answer as the Canaries.
Holyhead Hotspur of course now fly the flag in the town having been formed in 1990 and we
recently celebrated our 25th anniversary in July.
Our visitors are now beginning to hit the type of form we expect as one of the favourites to
make it to the Premier Welsh league next season, however we ourselves are well in touch
with the leaders such is the competitive nature of our league and my hunch is Caernarfon
will return over the bridge after today’s game knowing fully well they have been in a game!
Last Saturday we were the hosts for the FAW Welsh Cup second round tie against Welsh
National League (Wrexham area) side Chirk A.A.A. who are among the pacesetters at the
top of their league competition. However, we proved far too strong for our opponents on
Halloween and there was no chance of being spooked! We took a two goal lead in the first
half – on 18 Damian Ketley back after a 3 match suspension laid the ball perfectly across the
goalmouth for Dewi Thomas to find the corner of the net in emphatic style and a couple of
minutes later the pacey Ryan Jones on the right sent over an inviting cross for Danny
Connolly (in for Mike Kelly whose wife was due to give birth to their third child) who headed
past the young keeper Jack Cox despite being under pressure. A two goal lead can often be
precarious and to be fair Chirk took the game to us for a good period in the second half but
it had to be said did not test Carl between the sticks unduly although making a couple of
important blocks in each half. Towards the end Campbell’s men recovered their composure
and always looked dangerous, first Dewi Thomas in typical style ghosted in to put the final
nail in the visitors’ coffin to round off our entry into the third round of the Welsh Cup and
Editorial By

the draw can be found in later on in this programme, we have got another home tie against
local League Of Wales side Bangor City.
It is quite remarkable to think that we have now played seventeen league and various cup
games counting this afternoon’s fixture against Caernarfon that thirteen will have been here
at the New Stadium and only four away, with no doubt five home draws in the cup
competitions and one postponed away league fixture contributing to the fact, but I suppose
that is the way the cookie crumbles as they say but spare a thought for Jonathan, Richard
and me!!
However, our next game is away Huws Gray Alliance fixture at Denbigh Town this coming
Friday night (13th November) with the kick off arranged for an 8pm start.
The Central Park team have been the surprise success in the league and cup so far and
especially so in the Word Cup including giving us a 0-4 beating here in the second round
after we ourselves had taken care of now Welsh Premier Club Llandudno. Denbigh have
beaten Welsh Premier Clubs Rhyl and Airbus to reach the latter stages of the League of
Wales competition but am sure Campbell and Daz will have the players up for the challenge
next Friday night as on our day or night Hotspur can give anyone a run for their money.
Our next home game is another attractive fixture against Holywell Town who were
promoted back into our league from the Welsh Alliance at the end of 2014/15. They too are
among the better clubs in the league having been very successful in recent years in all
competitions, the kick off on Saturday 21st November will be the usual 2.30 pm.
To be honest the Reserves are having a frustrating time in the North Wales Reserve League
and especially so Andy Batsford and John Batson the two managers with games called off by
the opposition etc. Due to various reasons, however they were due to visit Llanrug United
this afternoon and are down to host Blaenau Ffestiniog on Tuesday 17th November with a
7.45 pm kick off. Please check this out nearer the time with the various outlets.
Our two previous away games proved interesting off the field! At Llanfair United everyone
enjoyed a superb after match meal with even Campbell Harrison saying it was the best ever
on his travels (I hope they stay in the league!) while Mold Alex are looking very up market
with their on-going improved facilities which is all good for the standard of the HGA in the
meantime keep the faith.

FOUR GOAL HOTSPUR BEWITCH CHIRK
It may well have been Halloween but Campbell Harrison’s Holyhead Hotspur side were in no mood
to be spooked by visitors Chirk A.A.A. in this second round Welsh cup tie, putting four goals past
their game but in the end well beaten Welsh National League (Wrexham Area) opponents. Strikes in
the first 20 minutes via Dewi Thomas and Danny Connolly (in for the unavailable Mike Kelly) gave the
Huws Gray Alliance side a two goal cushion at the break and although Chirk threatened to make a
comeback for periods in the second half they failed to trouble Hotspur keeper Carl Jones unduly, the
hosts coming strong again in the final quarter of an hour, doubling their total from Dewi Thomas
again and a rocket from Mike Edwards with bonfire night in mind to complete an emphatic move
into round three.
The win will put Hotspur in good heart for next Saturday’s always attractive HGA encounter with old
Rivals Caernarfon Town at the New Stadium 2.30 pm kick off.
Returning after suspension Damian Ketley and Jamie Roberts tested young Chirk Keeper Jack Cox
early on followed by a good run on the right by Ryan Jones in what was a rather scrappy nip+tuc
start. However, the home team were always on the front foot and it was no real surprise they took
the lead on 18 minutes – Damian Ketley received the ball on the left and the omens were good as he
delivered low and hard across the goalmouth for Dewi Thomas to hit a fine first time shot into the
bottom corner. It was 2-0 a couple of minutes later, Ryan Jones produced a fine run down the right
and his searching cross into the danger area saw Danny Connolly head past Cox although under
pressure. Hotspur continued to probe although Carl Jones did well to come out and deny Tom
Freeman on 25 getting hurt in the process. From a corner on the right by Kenleigh Owen it reached
Alex Jones at the far stake who headed just wide while Ryan Jones 30 yard screamer was very close
on 39. Just before the break Chirk’s best moment so far – Marcus Davies to Adam Pugh who hit the
side netting. (Half Time 2-0)
A two goal advantage is often described as precarious and so it proved in the second period, the
visitors winning far more of the ball and on 52 full back Danny Myers put in a good effort just past
the post and on 65 Nathan Lavender to Gareth Roberts who was in on goal but Carl Jones read the
situation well with his legs and just after Ashton Williams powered too close for Comfort on 66.
Hotspur although in control having to defend more and were having to head warnings, but the
visitors were unable to make more of any opportunities coming their way. However, Hotspur sprang
to life again as the visitors who had put in a good second half without making it count were punished
twice again. First on 85 Dewi Thomas ghosted into a good position to take a pass and produced a
sharp finish inside the upright and a minute later a combined move originating from the right
reached Mike Edwards just inside the box who picked his shot superbly into the top left hand corner
which proved to be the final nail in the visitors coffin!

FAMILY AFFAIR EARNS A POINT Mold 2-2 Holyhead
Both Mold Alexandra Manager Sean Rogers and Holyhead Hotspur boss Campbell Harrison on reflection would
perhaps settle for a point apiece at Alyn Park on Saturday. This from a game which sprang to life in the second
half after a first half stalemate.
However, Hotspur were quick out of the blocks in the second half after just five minutes via Mike Kelly, but the
hosts responded with interest drawing level through Jack Laird on 63 and the goal scorer turned provider for
Ross McDowell to put Alex in the driving seat with fifteen minutes to go. A few minutes later they could have
been celebrating a two goal advantage but returning to the starting line-up after numerous weeks out injured
central defender Alex Jones headed off the line and the goal saver went to goal taker ten minutes from the
end to finish off a Rhys Roberts header and earn his side a point thus adding to ‘fellow family member’ Kelly’s
earlier strike.
Roberts had almost got on the scoresheet himself just a minute prior to Jones’ leveller striking the bar while
the visitors had to finish the final five minutes without full back Brendun Hogan after somewhat harshly
receiving a straight red for violent conduct!
This coming weekend Harrison’s men welcome Welsh Cup second round visitors Chirk AAA from the Welsh
National League (Wrexham area) to the New Stadium 2.30 pm kick off. Hoping to make it into the third round
draw and perhaps meet one of the Welsh Premier clubs at Home!
Hotspur first to show and Alex Jones cross was headed wide by Corey Jones on two. A minute later Jack Laird
for Mold produced a good effort but wide. Nip & Tuc but on 14 Tom Murray made a good run from the left
and his shot drifted just wide on the far post. The same player for Mold was again involved in good approach
work but drove over on 22. At the other end following successive Holyhead corners Kenleigh Owen’s snapshot
was just tipped over by Steve Longgrigg on 29. On the half hour mark John McAulliffe released Laird and with
Carl Jones having to come out of goal slipped the ball past the keeper and rolled past the upright. On 33 a free
kick by Kenleigh Owen was blocked and rebounded to him and he drove just wide. On 39 Mold’s Alex Ahmed
put a poor pass across his own area reaching Ryan Jones who shot first time but wide. Half Time 0-0
Holyhead on the front foot quickly at start of the second half and the second of two corners on the right by
Kenleigh Owen reached a crowded goalmouth the ball eventually coming back to Mike Kelly just inside the box
whose shot perhaps aided by a slight deflection crept inside the post (50). Straight down the other end and
Daley Wood had a golden chance to get his side back into it quickly but his finish let him down driving wide.
Mold were having a lot of the ball but Woods on the right was wasting good positions by poor delivery into the
box. Hotspur were looking to add at this stage, Dean Garmey netted with a header but offside. On 63
however, the Alyn Park side were level – this time Woods cross was half cleared and Jack Laird’s stinging drive
seemed to take a couple of deflections before hitting the corner of the net. Mold’s tails up now in what was
turning out to be a good second period and on 75 took the lead, Laird did very well to release sub Ross
McDowell who beat off his defenders and from fifteen yards produced a superb curling effort beyond Carl
Jones. A minute later it could have been worse sub Andreas Enconmides on the left touch line saw the keeper
off his line after clearing danger and his shot was goal bound only for Alex Jones to head away on the line in
what turned out to be a defying moment. On 79 a corner on the left by Jamie Roberts saw Rhys Roberts’s
smart header smack against the bar and somehow stay out for another corner – same again Roberts again
beating the defence with another header and Alex Jones in front of him touched it past the keeper. With five
minutes left Hotspur went down to ten men with Brendun Hogan’s dismissal but 2-2 was perhaps right at full
time.

SECRETARY NOTES
Welcome everyone to the New Stadium for today’s Huws Gray league match against one of
the front runners in the league Caernarfon Town, and a special welcome to all connected in
any way with them. They have I am sure brought a load of supporters (which is great news)
as this will create a good atmosphere for the match so let’s hope we all enjoy a good
afternoon’s foootball. I know that Caernarfon’s supporters are vocal and sometimes
boisterous but I am sure they will be better behaved than some of the very rowdy element we
had last week when Chirk AAA visited us. We have had many tussles with Caernarfon over
the years stretching back especially to the 50’s and 60’s. I refereed there many times and the
atmosphere was always great, they are indeed a fine club with a long and proud tradition (just
like the late and great Holyhead Town).
Those who supported Holyhead Town all those years ago will be sad to hear that ‘Raymond
bach’ who lived in Wrexham has died. A tenacious mid fielder was Raymond, who despite
his size was a real handful and football was not such a gentlemanly game in those days.
The first team has a difficult month ahead as we are playing four of the top teams in the
league this month. Today we host Caernarfon Town, and next Friday 13th
we are away at
Denbigh Town 7.45pm ko and Saturday 21st home to Holywell Town and then to cap it all
away at Guilsfield on the 28th
November. What a month and it will be interesting to see how
many points we collect out of those four very hard matches.
We seemed to have a good 20 minutes at the start, and a good 20 minutes at the end of the
match last Saturday against Chirk AAA. The middle 50 minutes to my mind was when we
descended to their level. If they win the Welsh National league title (Wrexham area) and
want to come into this league they will have to improve considerably. We scored 2 goals in
each of the first 20 and final 20 minutes and when we played ‘around them’ as we are so
capable of doing it looked easy. A great debut goal from Danny Connolly will make him and
his family so proud. Good to have him with us he transferred in from Bodorgan recently. I
wont say any more about the Chirk AAA match as people may think I am being critical, but
we will certainly need to raise our game today against Caernarfon Town today.
The reserves are away at Llanrug today and home to Blaenau Ffestiniog on Tuesday 17th
November with a 7.45pm kick off. Then they are away at Llanberis on Saturday 28th
November. There are two matches in December home v Porthmadog (mid week date to be
confirmed) and away at Llangefni on Saturday 19th
December.
Welcome back to Bryn Roberts an extremely talented right sided wing man who will do a
great job for Andy and John in the reserves, and you never know the first team and well,
football has these strange twists and turns.
Dave, Mike and myself met Council officers last Friday to discuss the future for us when the
Council stop doing the work they do now on the 31st March. We asked various questions and
they have taken our concerns away and hopefully we will have everything sorted in the next
couple of months. I am hoping to get a grant soon so that we can do some alterations to the
Club house. We need a new fire exit door and that will be the time we move the stage to the
other side of the room with a new carpet and larger dance floor.
Our fire consultant Emlyn Manley Williams of Mon Fire Management is working closely
with us and we need to listen carefully to his advice.
Our Mervyn Williams spends a great deal of his time coaching all our young keepers. He
does it from the goodness of his heart. Thanks Mervyn and you never know where your
coaching will take some of these lads.
I have put an advert board up for Mark of DU as a thank you for getting us the new Club
Shop/Store building, and also a board for ‘Linksair’ who have sponsored the first team away
kit. If you are interested in an advert board around the ground please contact me Richard
Parry 01407 762904, it’s a great way of showing your support for the club and the
community.
Well this league is getting more interesting by the minute. There are now six clubs
scrambling for the top spot and it looks as if it will be a tight race right through to the end of
season. The one with a Domestic Licence of course will be the only real winner, so
Caernarfon Town will obviously be going for that this term. If they succeed good luck to
them but it is a tough call this year with so many good teams taking points off each other.
A great supporter of the Club Kevin Lewis must have thought Christmas had come early for
him last Saturday. The under 16’s which he manages with Rikki and Stan won 8 – 0, Hotspur
won 4 -0, but hugely important Liverpool beat Chelsea to add to the misery of Jose M the
Chelsea manager. Since Jose M had that ‘up and downer’ with Eva the club doctor things
have gone from bad to worse at the club, and I really wonder if he has lost the dressing room.
No manager can survive long if that be the case.
A dream Welsh Cup draw for the weekend 5/6 December (details to be finalized) against
Bangor City. Strange Gwyn Pierce and I were talking about the draw last Saturday and I said
I hope we don’t draw you!!!
I attended a meeting last Tuesday with Andy and John of the reserves to discuss the way
forward for the league. There are now only 14 teams and the consensus seemed to be that
from January we do to one league for all 14 clubs. We will have to await the decisions of the
individual clubs and the league management committee.
Our Youth Development committee would love to see the present youth league structure of
under 12/14/16 changed to under 13/15/17 as it used to be some seasons ago, and the reason
for this is to give youngsters that extra year in youth football before they have to enter senior
football. Alun Foulkes on the NWCFA could be crucial here as it’s the NWCFA that can
agree to the new format. I know players can sign for senior football aged 16 but some of them
are still ‘slight in stature’ and playing senior football is just too much at that point in their
development. We will wait with interest to see if there is any progress on this matter.
Lastly have a look please at the Club shop Gareth is keen to make sales and Christmas is
getting closer. What better Christmas gift than a scarf or a hat or something to treasure.
RICHARD PARRY
'We Shouldn't Fear Any Team'.
An update from Cofis manager Iwan Williams on all things Caernarfon Town:
“I was pleased with our performance on Saturday. Many looked at it as a potential banana
skin but we handled it well and put in a very professional performance. Having said that,
Junction came at us in the opening stages and it felt like it was going to be a real cup tie. It
took us half an hour to gain control of the game but once we scored the first goal, there was
only going to be one winner. It’s not often you go into half-time 3-0 up and have a go at the
players, but I felt it was justified as it took us too long to get out of first gear. Second half we
dominated possession and our pattern of play was clear and visible which was pleasing as it
was something we’d worked on in training in the week. Our movement and creativity was
very effective and probably the only negative from the performance was that we didn’t
punish our visitors enough.
I must single out Jay Gibbs as I thought he was tremendous on Saturday. He kept us ticking
for ninety minutes and scored two quality goals. His work rate is different class and you can
see why he gets frustrated as he’s a born winner. That’s something that I will not try to take
out of him because sometimes it has a positive effect as he demands performances from his
team mates. Jay just needs to stay at that level now and continue to drive us on from midfield.
The Welsh Cup draw was an interesting one and the tie is one we’re all looking forward to.
It’s sometimes good to get away from your normal surroundings and test ourselves in the
unknown! Goytre have started similarly to us and are top of their respected league which is
equivalent to ours so we will not underestimate them. We’ve already began preparation as we
will look to travel down on the Friday night to enable us to be fresh for the tie. This is a
competition that I feel very passionate about and I stressed to the players that we’re not in it
to make the numbers up. We’ve played six WPL teams since I’ve been in charge and only
lost one of them in ninety minutes so we shouldn’t fear any team.
We have a good changing room at the minute and the lads are pulling together very well.
Togetherness was something I was keen to implement when I came in so it’s pleasing that the
lads are buying in to that ethos. We have players coming back from injuries now also which
will give me a selection headache as some of them are going to be disappointed but it’s part
and parcel of football nowadays and the players know that. I’d much rather have this sort of
headache though than the one I’ve endured for the last six or seven weeks, where we’ve been
struggling for numbers due to a host of injuries!!”
Caernarfon Town 4 – 0 Llandudno Junction. Caernarfon Town have not enjoyed a run to the latter stages of the Welsh Cup for a number of years
but the signs are positive that this may be about to change as Iwan Williams’ side confidently swept
past a good Llandudno Junction in their second round tie at the Oval.
The Railwaymen have enjoyed an excellent season thus far and currently lie third in the Welsh
Alliance League after an unbeaten nine match start to the campaign. However, the Cofis are also on
a good run of form and they proved too strong for the visitors, comfortably running out 4-0 victors.
Town’s midfield playmaker, Jay Gibbs, returned to the side after a three game suspension and he put
on a man of the match performance, helping his side through with a well taken brace, with Grahame
Austin and Jamie Breese also finding the net.
The visitors started the match confidently without creating too much going forward whilst
Caernarfon were initially forced into speculative long range efforts on goal, with Jamie Breese twice
pulling the trigger without success, his second attempt whistling an inch past the keeper’s near post.
Known for his creativeness on the ball, Nathan Craig was given an opportunity to show his defensive
qualities in the twentieth minute and he produced a well-timed tackle on Joel Hewitt, the Junction
defender looking set to strike from close range.
Jamie McDaid went close to finding the next in the twentieth minute but could not quite take
advantage of his opportunity whilst Danny Brookwell and Jay Gibbs linked well a minute later to set
up Rob Jones just inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s powerful goalbound strike was
deflected off a Junction defender for a corner.
It was some quick thinking between Nathan Craig and Jamie McDaid that finally helped create
Caernarfon’s opener on the half hour mark when they worked a quick short corner, with Craig
crossing the ball into the area, where Grahame Austin did well to rise above his marker and head
past Junction stopper Gwydion Owen and into the bottom far corner of his net (photo).
Town doubled their lead four minutes later when Gibbs, Breese and Rob Jones worked well together
and Gibbs finished things off with a first time finish from ten yards. Gibbs turned provider just before
half-time as he threaded a ball from midfield into the path of Breese, who finished superbly by
dinking the ball over the onrushing Owen.
With such a commanding lead at half-time, Caernarfon could have been excused for easing off the
pace but they continued to surge forward and Breese warmed the hands of Owen with a thunderous
low strike that the keeper did well to get his hands to.
On the hour mark manager Iwan Williams took the opportunity to give the recently returned James
Thomas a second home debut for the club, having last appeared for the team at the Oval seven
years ago. The winger made an instant impact when a jinking run resulted in him being brought
down just outside the penalty area. Nathan Craig’s free kick was pushed out by Owen but the ball
soon returned to the ex-Everton player who crossed to the far post, where Gibbs was on hand to
head the ball past Owen.
The draw for the next round of the Welsh Cup will be held on Monday and Caernarfon Town
supporters may well feel that their poor record in the country’s premier cup competition may be
about to end.

Caersws 3 – 6 Caernarfon Town.
Caernarfon Town are top of the Cymru Alliance League tonight after an exciting 6-3 victory over Caersws at the
Recreation Ground. With new signing James Thomas added to the group, Iwan Williams was able to take a
sixteen man squad down to Powys and, with the hosts currently languishing at the foot of the table, his side
proved just how big the gap between the top and bottom teams are as they ran out comfortable winners.
Having said this, the home side had to play the final hour with ten men and did well to keep the score close
until late in the second period.
Caernarfon looked confident from the off as they started with a quick tempo, passing the ball smartly from the
back although it was Town stopper Paul Pritchard who was the first to be tested when he comfortably held a
low effort by ‘Sws striker Elliot Jones in the third minute. Jamie Breese and Kevin Lloyd were looking to run the
channels whenever they could and it was a well-timed run from Breese in the fifth minute that forced Dale
Evans to bring him down in the area, giving referee Martin Williams little option but to award a penalty, which
Nathan Craig confidently made the most of, sending David Jones the wrong way between the sticks (photo).
The hosts were finding it hard to keep possession of the ball in the early stages but their frontman Elliot Jones
was looking sharp and, having already tested Pritchard once, he managed to beat the Cofis keeper with an
excellent strike that found the far corner of his net in the ninth minute, putting the teams back on level terms.
However, it took Caernarfon just three minutes to restore their lead when the home side failed to clear their
lines from a corner, Rob Jones crossing into the box, where Gareth Edwards was on hand to head the ball into
an empty net.
The Canaries dominated possession from hereon and it came as no surprise when they extended their lead in
the twenty sixth minute. Kevin Lloyd was through on goal and about to pull the trigger when he was brought
down from behind by Jack Bermingham, resulting in a second spot kick for the Cofis and a red card for the
Caersws defender. Nathan Craig repeated his earlier success from the spot and Caernarfon seemed set for a
comfortable afternoon, two goals up and facing ten men. To be fair to Graham Evans side, they rolled their
sleeves up and worked hard to keep a tight shape and although Caernarfon went close to finding the net again
through Gareth Edwards, Kevin Lloyd and Jamie Breese, Caersws were making rare forays into the Town half
and substitute Jack Harris forced Pritchard into a stunning save from his free kick, the Town keeper stretching
full length keep the ball out of his net. Indeed, the hosts did manage to reduce the deficit in first half injury
time, when their dangerman Elliot Jones stunned Pritchard with a dipping shot that flew over the keeper from
twenty yards out. Caersws continued to keep themselves in the match at the beginning of the second half but
were showing little by way of goal threat, with Caernarfon looking comfortable on the ball, and enjoying the
extra space to be had with an extra man. Having gone close to restoring their two goal lead on numerous
occasions, they finally managed to find a way past Jones again when Grahame Austin got on the end of a
Nathan Craig free-kick to head the ball into the bottom far corner of the net.
The goal seemed to dishearten Caersws slightly and good work between Kevin Lloyd and Joe Williams on the
right flank ended with Williams skipping past his marker before crossing the ball into the six yard box where
Clive Williams arrived impressively to volley the ball past the stranded Jones.
Substitutes Danny Brookwell and James Thomas both went close to scoring before a sixth goal arrived when
Kevin Lloyd delivered an inch perfect low cross into the box for Jamie Breese, who thundered into the onion
bag from close range.
Elliot Jones completed his hat-trick for the home side in the final minutes when he succeeded from the penalty
spot after being fouled in the area.
Caernarfon’s next match will be at the Oval on Saturday, 31st October, when they welcome Llandudno
Junction to in the Welsh Cup.

HOLYHEAD HOTSPUR FOOTBALL CLUB HISTORY Holyhead is a town with a rich footballing tradition, from Holyhead F.C. in the late 1800’s and in the early 1900’s being represented by teams as diverse as Holyhead Liberals and Holyhead Locos. Holyhead’s ‘purple patch’ was in the 1950’s and 1960’s when the famous Harbourmen rode high on the stage of North Wales football from their base at Cae Mwd on Turkeyshore Road. In the 70’s and 80’s Holyhead was represented by Mountain Rangers and Holyhead United Juniors who secured Welsh League status. Holyhead Hotspur F.C. was founded in 1990, when several prominent people involved in local football formed the Club. At the time of its formation there were four other local Clubs in the town operating in different leagues of the North Wales Coast Football Association. By 1997, with the success of Hotspur, all the Clubs amalgamated and Holyhead Hotspur F.C. became the modern day successor to the ‘Harbourmen’ of years ago, and formed a senior team and a reserve team and Youth teams called Holyhead Hotspur Peibio in recognition of their past association with Peibio and the great work done by many people over the years in fostering youth football at Peibio. In 2009 ‘Clwb Cybi’ a special needs team joined us and this underlines the Club’s desire to be an ‘all inclusive football club’ within our community. The Club has enjoyed much success over the years. In successive seasons 1995/6, 1996/7, 1997/8 winning the Anglesey League, Gwynedd League and Welsh Alliance League Championships, and this was the focus which resulted in the amalgamation of all the Holyhead Clubs at that time. The season 1998/9 saw the reserve team promoted to the Gwynedd League and the senior team promoted to the Huws Gray Alliance League. The Huws Gray Alliance League is North Wales and Mid Wales’s feeder league to the Welsh Premier League. The senior side had over a period of time consolidated its position in the Huws Gray Alliance League, and the reserves had likewise done so in the Gwynedd League, culminating in both teams finishing runners – up in their respective leagues, their highest ever final league positions at the end of the 2008/2009 campaign, as well as the first team finishing as losing finalists in the Huws Gray Alliance league cup. This occurred twice each time losing out to Bala Town FC in the final. However despite a more than creditable 8th position in season 2009/10 after a very poor start, the Club was relegated to the Welsh Alliance Division 1. This was because the Welsh Premier League decided to reduce its membership for season 2010/11 from eighteen to twelve teams. This was a great disappointment to us, and we had to strive to gain our rightful place in the Huws Gray Alliance League (which is tier 2 of Welsh Football) which we did as League champions in the season 2011/12, also winning both the Cookson and Barritt Cup competitions and losing finalists in the Football Association of Wales Welsh Trophy competition. This next season our reserves will be competing in the newly formed Welsh Alliance Reserve League. The management of the reserves are looking forward to this new challenge. The League is divided into two divisions Gwynedd and Clwyd. Firstly each club will play the others in their respective division, and then afterwards two new divisions will be created by combining the top and bottom sections of both areas. your team as well as the match officials will be wearing T-Shirts with the FAW Fair Play and Off
the Pitch logos during the warm up and hand-shake to promote the Fair Play message. We hope
that your club, as well as you as supporters will embrace the Fair Play message and continue the
good work your clubs have already done over past seasons.
The FAW Fair Play Code aims to raise the profile of the Fair Play message by inspiring players,
clubs, officials and supporters to maintain good on-field discipline including abiding by the Laws
of the Game, respecting opponents, referees and promoting the interests of football. To
encourage good behaviour, the FAW will periodically publish Disciplinary Tables for each of the
Directly-Affiliated Leagues via a dedicated page on the FAW website. Those topping each table at
the end of the season are awarded a Fair Play Award and a prize of £1000 to be spent on
improving facilities at your club. Previous winners of the Award have invested the money on an
upgrade to dressing rooms, new equipment such as balls, bibs, kit and improving the pitch. The
12 Winners of the 2013/14 season have received the £1000 prize money and were presented
with a Fair Play trophy before the Wales v Bosnia & Herzegovina UEFA Euro 2016 Qualifiers at
the Cardiff City Stadium in October 2014.
The FAW Off the Pitch campaign is also represented here today and aims to educate all of our
stakeholders including clubs and players with regards best practice when using social media. Off
the Pitch is also here to remind stakeholders how comments made via social media can reflect
on their club or competition that they participate in and therefore, offers advice to players and
club officials such as treating others with respect. Be in the right state of mind when posting and
to generally act responsibly when using all forms of social media.
The Off the Pitch campaign is unique amongst National Associations within Europe and has been
utilised as evidence of best practice with regards promoting the positive usage of social media by
UEFA. The FAW social media team look forward to continuing to work together with all its
stakeholders over the coming seasons.

Caernarfon Town FC - A brief history
THE first football club in Caernarfon, known as Caernarvon Athletic, was formed in September
1876 and played at various grounds before moving to the Oval in 1888. On 30th October 1886
Caernarfon were the 1st team from NW Wales to enter the English FA Cup and lost 10-1 away to
Stoke City. Five years later, however, that particular club went out of existence but, in 1894,
several former players began a new team called Caernarvon Ironopolis. That club competed in
the North Wales Coast League, winning the championship on two occasions and reaching the
semi-final of the Welsh Cup in 1900 and again in 1902. Unfortunately, following a dispute with
the league, Ironopolis folded in 1903. The demise of the club resulted in some of the players
forming the Caernarvon Colts while others affiliated to the Caernarvon RWF (Royal Welsh
Fusiliers), both clubs playing at the Oval.
In 1906, the clubs amalgamated to form Caernarvon United and in 1909 the new club won both
the Welsh and North Wales Amateur Cups. After the Great War, the demobbed United players
formed a new club (Caernarvon Athletic) which, until 1921, played in the North Wales Coast
League and thereafter the Welsh National League Division Two (West), with mixed fortune. In
1926, however, a limited company was formed and a full-time manager and professional team
engaged. The club met with immediate success, winning the Welsh National League Division One
championship in 1926/27, ahead of Bangor City and Rhyl, and repeating the feat in 1929/30
having been pipped to the title by Connah’s Quay & Shotton 12 months earlier. Caernarvon
Athletic are still remembered for their F.A. Cup run in 1929 when they defeated Darlington
before going out to Bournemouth in a second round replay, the first game at the Oval attracting
a crowd of some 9,000. In 1930, however, the club went into liquidation but two years later a re-
formed team won the Welsh Combination before quitting over problems in using the Oval.
It was in 1937 that a group of local soccer enthusiasts began Caernarfon Town F.C. and entered
a team in the Welsh League (North) Division One. A 39 year unbroken membership of the league
was begun and Caernarfon Town won the championship in 1946/47 and 1965/66 and finished
runners-up in both 1956/57 and 1957/58 and once again in 1972/73. Unfortunately, in 1976
internal problems led to the club’s withdrawal from the league after just six matches but, within
a matter of months, the club was once again re-formed and bounced back 12 months later.
Astonishingly, the club then proceeded to win the league championship in each of the next two
seasons! After taking those two league titles in 1977/78 and 1978/79, losing only one game in
total (Nantlle Vale winning 1-0 in 1977/78), Caernarfon were granted permission by the Welsh
Football Association to join the Lancashire Combination league. The club went on to win the
Combination Cup in 1981 (beating Bacup Borough in the two-legged final) and then the league
championship in 1981/82, heading off the challenge of Colne Dynamoes by two points.
The following season, Caernarfon moved into the newly-created North West Counties League and
achieved promotion, along with Radcliffe Borough, at the first attempt. In 1985, Caernarfon
Town were runners-up in the first division and were elected to the Northern Premier League.
Despite a poor start, new manager John King turned playing affairs round and the club enjoyed
its most successful F.A. Cup run in 1986/87. Caernarfon Town defeated 4th Division Stockport
County at the Oval and then defeated 3rd Division York City in a replay before losing a third
round replay again to second division Barnsley by a goal to nil. The Canaries finished third in the
NPL and felt if not for the FA Cup run they would probably have gained promotion to the Football
Conference. In May 1987, King left to become manager of Tranmere Rovers and former LiverpooI
wing-half Tommy Smith was appointed manager but left in December 1987 after a series of poor
results, giving way to Phil Wilson who had been a player with the club the previous season.
A revival in the latter half of the 1987/88 campaign lifted Caernarfon up to third place and they
also reached the semi-final of the Welsh Cup before losing out (on a 2-1 aggregate) to Cardiff
City. In 1989/90, Caernarfon were relegated to the NPL's first division and, following a series of
mediocre performances over a five-year period, the club’s board of directors decided to return to
Welsh soccer which many supporters thought was the biggest mistake in the Club's history.
Thus, Caernarfon were welcomed into the League of Wales in August 1995. The 1995/96 season
was very successful with Caernarfon achieving sixth place in the league table and reaching the
semi-finals of both the League of Wales League Cup and the North Wales Coast F.A. Cup. That led
to an even more enjoyable 1996/97 season when the Canaries challenged Barry Town for the
league title before finishing fourth, just behind Ebbw Vale on goal difference and missing out on
a place in Europe. The Canaries also progressed to the final of the North Wales Coast F.A. Cup
before going down 2-1 to Porthmadog. Eifion Williams, the club’s leading goalscorer, twice won
international recognition for Wales at under-21 level and earned Caernarfon a reported £25,000
when transferred to champions Barry Town in 1997. 1997/98 proved to be a difficult campaign
marked by the failure to replace Eifion Williams in attack. The club languished at the wrong end
of the table for most of the season, before pulling clear of relegation.
Paul Rowlands became the Canaries’ fourth manager that season and his contagious enthusiasm
turned fortunes around. Twelve months later, Town just missed out on a place in Europe after
ending in fifth place and reaching the final of the Gilbert League Cup, before losing to Barry
Town. Nonetheless, the disasters of 1999/2000 were just around the corner. Town began the
new term badly and an even worse financial plight saw the club part company with all its players.
Dixie McNeill was appointed as manager in an attempt to avert the increasingly inevitable threat
of relegation. The one bright spot was Caernarfon’s 1-0 success over Swansea City in the FAW
Premier Cup. The following season, however, was a marvellous time for the Canaries. The club
won the Cymru Alliance championship and League Cup and also picked up the North Wales Coast
Challenge Cup.
Manager Adrian Jones guided the team through this deserved success, and off the field a new
stand and changing facilities were finally completed early in 2001. In 2001/2, the club enjoyed
an encouraging League of Wales campaign but faded somewhat in the last third of the season
and 2002/3 saw them achieve only 14th place. By early 2004, the Canaries were in contention
for a top eight spot, but surprisingly decided to part company with manager Adie Jones after
more than three years at the helm. Former Wrexham midfielder Waynne Phillips took the job in a
caretaker role and continued on a permanent player/manager basis in 2004/5, but results did
not really improve over his two seasons in charge and he stepped down in June 2007, to be
replaced by former Oswestry Town and Cefn Druids manager Steve O'Shaughnessy. After
occupying bottom place for much of the season, the Canaries finally improved their position at
Easter and ended the season safe from the drop.
Steve O'Shaughnessey left Town at the end season 2007/08 to take over the hot seat at Connah's
Quay and was replaced by David Rowe. Rowe found his first season in the Welsh Premier
extremely difficult but improved results in the latter part of the season failed to rescue
Caernarfon from the drop to the Cymru Alliance.
Rowe resigned due to work commitments in September 2009 and was succeeded by the current
management duo of Derek Roberts and Mel Jones, the first locally based management team for
20+ years. Bouncing back at the first time of asking was the aim for this season and striving to
obtain the UEFA Domestic Licence but this aim was drastically re-evaluated after a disappointing
run of results saw the club languish at the bottom end of the table. Derek and Mel parted
company with the club in November 2009 and Ex-Buckley Town manager Simon Sedgwick was
appointed to the manager’s role, along with assistant Paul Dodd.
In March 2009, with finances at an all time low, and the club’s entire future in doubt, the
Chairman, George Denham and fellow directors resigned. A group of current club officials and
supporters took over the running of the Club and have put in place a plan to keep the Club in
existence. A new management team of Geraint Williams and Ernie Talbot put together a locally
based squad to see the club through the last games of the 2009/10 season.
The Club were relegated to the Welsh Alliance for the start of the 2010/11 season and appointed
Clive Jones as their new manager after the sudden resignation of Geraint Williams. A new youth
system has also begun to develop with the formation of an U18’s side, managed by ex-Town
player Bryn Williams. The youth team will plays in the Colwyn & Aberconwy Junior League.
After a poor run of results and with the Club on the bottom of the Welsh Alliance League
(Division 1), Clive Jones left the managerial post by mutual consent. Steve ‘Psycho’ Smith was
appointed manager in November 2010 with the task of keeping the Club in the Welsh Alliance
Division 1 and developing a squad that can challenge for honours next season. Steve is assisted
by Colin Saynor, who stepped down from his role as Chairman of Llanberis FC, and head-coach
Steven Bee has decided to remain in his role.

Match report
HOTSPUR BITTEN BY THE BEAST
A goal just after the hour by Caernarfon Town striker Steve Lewis known as the beast was
enough to decide a passionate encounter between two old rivals on Tuesday evening before a
crowd of 328 at Hotspurs New Stadium venue, as one might expect the two sides never gave
an inch with defences so dominant neither keeper was overworked while the game played at a
hectic pace could have done with some more composure and thought which may have paid
dividends in the final third. The first 45 minutes saw very few clear cut chances, Mel McGinness
on 19 blazing over after good work from Mike Kelly on the right. While a good break down the
right by Darren Thomas saw Steve Lewis head just wide for the canaries. However, both Alex
Jones of Hotspur and eventual match winner Lewis both escaped with a yellow when it could
have been an early bath from separate incidents.
The second half would see the visitors take the lead on 61 minutes a corner on the right by
Nathan Craig into the crowded goalmouth saw Lewis quickest to react and fire instinctively past
Carl Jones from close range. Holyhead responded and three minutes later the industrious Jay
Gibbs was most unlucky to see his stinging 20 yard drive rattle the inside of the upright and
rebound to safety. The hosts were to be denied again on 82 when a corner on the left by Gibbs
found the head of sub Julian Williams who found the bottom corner but the referee harshly
disallowed it for a so called infringement in the area! The visitors had closed down Hotspur well
in the second period but Campbell Harrisons side could claim with some justification that they
deserved a share of the spoils while this result still left Llandudno needing a point to clinch the
championship and a tilt at the Welsh Premier next season.
After a draw and a defeat in the last two home games Holyhead Hotspur will be keen to make
amends and finish their home programme with a win against Denbigh Town this coming Saturday
2.30 in the battle for 4th place which also involves Caersws and Buckley Town who Holyhead
visit on 4th April (Easter Saturday) the last game of the season.
