Benefits of 60 & 74/84 GHz for RF Backup60 GHz and 70/80 GHz for RF backup:
FSO is unlicensed, yet has unequaled interference-free transmission characteristics with fiber-like link quality.
This permits immediate rollout and revenues. Ad-hoc network growth without approvals, no need for frequency
planning, or site coordination.
RF backup protection - ensures link integrity in heavy fog
60, 70/80 GHz has bandwidth to support these very high datarates EHF frequencies: Avoids EMI from other terrestrial RF transmissions Narrow RF beamwidths mitigate interference issues (used as backup) FSO with 60 GHz well-suited to 100-1000m links Licensed pt-to-pt FSO with 7080GHz well-suited up to 1500m
EHF Best Suited to Backup for ProtectionDrawbacks to EHF for Primary Links:
The 70/80 GHz frequency bands are likely to be point-to-point licensed, based on WCA petition recommendations to FCC; licensing puts constraints on providing competing service.
While interference is mitigated at EHF, it is not eliminated: hence licensing to avoid interference issues. Minimal costs? Always delays.
>55 GHz frequencies have very severe rain-fade attenuation. BER is heavily impacted by this multiple scattering. This is overlooked in
rain performance projections: clear-air CNR is used in calculations. Pointing wander is a well-known phenomenon at these frequencies due
to refractive index variations, especially early morning and evening; also mispointing in high winds: need to avoid large, high-gain antennas
But 60 GHz and 70/80 GHz represent an ideal solution for RF backup to FSO, with fallback to RF in heavy local fog conditions.
SONAbeam FSO Attenuation in Heavy Rain: - much less than EHF
Rain Attenuation – ITU Rain Zone K
‘One Size Fits All’ for all the U.S. (except the Gulf Coast1)5-9s Rain Availability1
(5 min outage/yr)
100 mm/hrFSO: 20 dB/km3
60-90 GHz: 36 dB/km2
4-9s Rain Availability
(1 hr outage/yr)
42 mm/hr FSO: 8 dB/km 60-90 GHz: 18 dB/km2
1. 5-9s rain rate for Region K is same as 4-9s for Gulf Coast, Region N
2. FCC Bulletin No.70, 33 dB/km; experimental data indicate this understates rain atten
3. SONAbeam rain performance validated in Costa Rica, rain region P, to 135 mm/hr
Protected Links - Hybrid FSO/RF Approach
Most cost-effective solution for a fully protected link for 100m-1500m broadband wireless applications:
The SONAbeam provides the most cost-effective heavy rain penetration (20 dB/km rain fade vs. 36 dB/km for EHF at 100 mm/hr).
Designing hybrid solution for SONAbeam rain penetration allows lower-cost radio design
End result is the most cost-effective protected broadband wireless solution, using complementary technologies.
SONAbeam & 60 GHz for unlicensed backup (0.1% in fog) to 1000m SONAbeam & 70/80 GHz for licensed backup (0.1% in fog) to 1500m
60 GHz is lower cost*; Unlicensed RF allows immediate deployment, even on/to the same buildings as competing wireline or wireless service providers.
*60 GHz doesn’t require East/West radio architecture with xmtr & rcvr technology at two frequencies 10 GHz apart; O2 attenuation allows low-cost adaptive power control.
