HYD Newsletter, late 2013 2013 has been an extremely busy year for the Humphreys Yacht Design studio, with a wide range of projects going through and others about to start. The first of the Tempus Class, a Tempus 90, was launched a few weeks ago while Oyster Yachts have recently announced two new projects that we have been developing quietly – the Oyster custom 115 project and the Oyster 745. Elan Marine continue to be busy with main focus on the new Elan 400 and 320, while Sirena Yachts recently launched the Azuree 46 to wide acclaim at the Cannes Boat Show. Our new Class 40 ‘Vaquita’ returned a good result in her very first race, and talking about returning results, the new Monte Fino ecHo has been lauded for her amazing fuel efficiency. LAUNCHED Tempus 90 The first TEMPUS 90, named 'TEMPUS FUGIT', was launched at the ARKIN PRUVA shipyard in August. She has undergone successful sea trials during a period of incredibly mixed conditions and in winds of up to 40 knots. TEMPUS FUGIT will be competing this Autumn at the Cannes Regatta Royale and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez. Her beautiful lines and varnished topsides are already turning heads wherever she sails. MORE Azuree 46 The new Azuree 46 was launched in August and has now undergone successful sea trials, where she demonstrated excellent performance and balance on the helm. She made her world début at the Cannes Yacht Show earlier this month where her beautiful lines and stylish looks generated plenty of attention. Class 40
The new Humphreys designed Class 40 'VAQUITA' was launched this summer and arrived in the Solent in August to compete in her first event,The Rolex Fastnet Race. She finished a very credtable third place in ahighly competitive, 18 boat Class 40 fleet. Since the Fastnet, VAQUITAwon the SORC Class 40 Division race from Poole to The Solent in heavy conditions. VAQUITA's next event will be the double-handed Transat Jaques Vabre Race this Autumn.

Elan 400
Following her world premiere at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2013, the first Elan 400 took to the water in early spring. Since then, five Elan 400’s havebeen delivered to delighted owners. The Elan 400 continues to impresseveryone with her excellent sailing ability and handling characteristics and her all-round versatility as a classic cruiser/racer.

Monte Fino ecHo 85
The Humphreys designed Monte Fino echo 85 was launched earlier this year and has been receiving glowing reports in the media for her supremelyefficient hull and underwater design. Her innovative hull form was the resultof extensive R&D work carried out by the Humphreys team utilising highly sophisticated RANS code CFD analysis in conjunction with acomprehensive tank test program.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Oyster 825
Construction of the new Oyster 825 is nearing completion and the first isdue for launch next month. Oyster have currently taken five orders for thenew 825, all to be built at Oyster Yachts Southampton. Designed as a bluewater cruising yacht she should be equally at home on the cruiser/racer circuit with her powerful rig and twin rudder appendage package.

Oyster 885 Hull 4 and 5
The 4th and 5th Oyster 885s are now under construction at Oyster YachtsSouthampton. The 885 is proving very popular with both existing Oysterowners and new clients. The design has impressed with its exceptionalsailing characteristics, with the twin rudder configuration delivering excellent balance and control upwind, making the boat a worthy addition to the globalsuperyacht racing fraternity.

Luce 35
The Luce 35 is the first in a new range of performance power boats to be built by Luce Yachts, a division of the Agantur Shipyard in Bodrum, Turkey.Construction is in infused epoxy, E-glass foam sandwich with a carbon fibre reinforced structure. Powered by twin IPS400's the Luce 35 is designed with a top speed of 40 knots.

115 footer for Oyster Yachts
This exciting new 115 foot custom sailing superyacht is being designed for an existing Oyster owner, with the hull design an evolution of the verysuccessful Oyster 885. The focus of the design is to provide outstandingsailing performance and handling characteristics for blue water cruising. Awell thought out general arrangement offers generous accommodation with 6 double or twin guest cabins and 6 crew berths.

The design of the Tempus 125 is now well under way at HYD. Blending traditional artistry with modern, highly sophisticated design techniques, thisdesign will provide excellent performance and exceptional sea-going characteristics with all the hallmarks of a 'spirit of tradition' classic. Theinterior can be finished and appointed to suit individual tastes, with anumber of different layouts available.

Tempus 150
Following on from the success of the Tempus 90, the design of the 150,flagship of the TEMPUS CLASS, is now well advanced at HYD. The hull geometry of the 150 has been highly refined through the use of modernCFD techniques to ensure superb performance, excellent seakeeping andhandling characteristics, while staying faithful to the ambience of classicalyacht design. A number of interior layout variations are possible to suit clients’ particular requirements.

Oyster 745
The design of the new Oyster 745 is well under way, with tooling due tocommence in the near future for launch in late 2015. The Oyster 745 promises to be as popular as the larger 885, and her world cruisingcredentials come built in to the package of design and the build.

B9 Sailing Cargo Ship
The B9 commercial sailing ship project is progressing steadily, with thedevelopment team in close dialogue with shipping interests and legislativebodies. The Humphreys studio has been working on the fundamental navalarchitecture and is now able to draw on the results of tank and wind tunnel testing carried out to validate the basic concept and set directions for further refinement.

The Humphreys brokerage arm is continuing to build up listings and clients.Recent listings include a beautiful 92 ft Alloy Yachts built ketch, and anumber of Elans. During the summer we concluded the sale of a new blue water sailing yacht to a new client, and are now actively working onTEMPUS CLASS sales.

Monaco yacht Show 2013
The Humphreys designed Oyster 885 ‘CLARE’ will be exhibited at thisyear’s Monaco Yacht Show by Oyster Yachts. She will be berthed in QuaiChicane C03. A number of the Humphreys Yacht Design team will be inattendance and we look forward to catching up with many of our clients and also friends in the industry.

Cannes Yacht Show 2013
The new Humphreys designed Azuree 46 from Sirena Marine premiered earlier this month at the Cannes Yacht Show and Rob Humphreys waspresent at the press conference and open evening when the new Azuree46 was introduced to the media and sailing world. Other Humphreysdesigns also at the show included the Oyster 575 and 885 as well as the Elan 400 and 494.

Monte Fino ecHo 85 Boat Tests
The Monte Fino ecHo 85 received glowing reports from a number of boat tests conducted in August. Alan Harper in his article for Motor Boat andYachting writes, after drawing comparison with other models in the sector,"…it’s clear from these comparisons that the Humphreys hull design for the ecHo 85 really does work" and in Showboats USA, Tom Isitt praises the modern hull design which provides incredible economy and enormouscruising range.

Yachts and Yachting June 2013 - Rupert Holmes test sailed and wrote an excellent article on the brand new Elan 400. "It’s easy to get the boat into the groove and stability in gusts is impressive....With the boat heeled at 10-15 degrees and the sheets pinned in with the apparent wind on the beam,she would happily bear away with just a twitch of the helm."

The Rolex Fastnet 2013
The 2013 Fastnet saw the debut of the brand new Humphreys designedClass 40 'VAQUITA', achieveing a creditable 3rd place in a large and competitive Class 40 Fleet. This marks a great start for the Austrian team inthe boat’s maiden race as well as the team’s first Class 40 event. It was ahighly competitive 18 boat fleet containing many seasoned campaigners and several brand new designs - a great bench mark for the team and their new Humphreys designed boat.

Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta
The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta took place in Porto Cervo, Sardinia in June of this year. The Oyster 885 'KARIBU', with sail trials only justcompleted, acquitted herself admirably, finishing the regatta in fourth placein Class C. Double Olympic gold medalist Jesper Bank, who raced on board for the event, was glowing with praise for the design.

Transat Jaques Vabre 2013
The next major event for the new Humphreys designed Class 40 'VAQUITA' will be the Transat Jaques Vabre. The race starts for the 26 strong Class 40 fleet in Le Havre on the 3 November where they will race double-handed across the Atalantic and Equator to Itajai in Brazil, some 5,395 nautical miles away.

The Elan Cup
The first ever UK Elan Cup was hosted over the weekend of the 17-18 August by the Royal Dartmouth Yacht Club and local Elan dealers Yachts of Dartmouth. With entries ranging from the Elan 210 to the Elan 410, twoclasses were assembled to fight it out In testing conditions of 20, gusting 30knots.

Oyster World Rally
The 27 Oyster yachts, including Eddie Jordan's Oyster 885 LUSH, arecurrently circling the globe from Antigua to Antigua. The fleet have nowcovered 10,000 miles and are on the East Coast of Australia. Their nextport of call is to be Darwin before sailing forth into their third ocean - the Indian Ocean.

Tempus Fugit
Humphreys Interior Design has been working on the Tempus 90, specifyingthe interior joinery, fixtures, fittings and furnishings. A classic teak interior was achieved with the structural timber frames left exposed where possible.

Oyster 625 'TIGER'
Another recent commission was the Oyster 625 'TIGER', where we worked with the owner on all the Interior furnishings. The theme was based on the bright strong colours the family have enjoyed over their many years living in Australia, but also drew inspiration from the family’s connections with the Royal Navy. Featuring in the scheme was a hand-carved HMS Tiger plate, specially commissioned from sculptor Ian Brennan who has previously enjoyed many Royal commissions.
