LEARNING IS A WORLD-WIDE JOURNEY
IN THE YEAR 3/4 ROOM
WRITING
Over the course of this term all Year 3/4 students
read the Trilogy wordless picture book series by
Aaron Becker - ‘The Journey’, ‘The Quest’ and
‘Return’. As a class, the students wrote a text to
match the picture book ‘The Journey’. Gaining
inspiration from this picture book they wrote their
own picture books about their own journey and a
quest to find something. Students published their
picture books and were given the opportunity to
read their finished book to the Kindy/ Pre-Primary
students. The K/PP’s had a wonderful time
listening to the very creative and imaginative texts
that the students wrote. Lots of interaction through
questions and discussion took place between all
grades.
TAGS LITERACY
In the Year 3/4 Room and in TAGS Literacy with
Mrs Brown the students have been exploring
different countries from around the world.
Last week the TAGS literacy group read the story
"Mama Panya's Pancakes: A Village Tale from
Kenya" providing an opportunity to teach students
about Kenya and concepts such as diversity and
equality. Mama Panya’s Pancakes depicts a young
Kenyan boy’s experience of visiting the market
with his mother. Along the way, Adika invites all
their friends for pancakes, causing Mama to worry
that she can’t afford enough flour to feed the extra
guests. However, everyone brings ‘gifts’ such as
milk, butter, and flour so that there is more than
enough for everyone. The story highlights the
vulnerability of impoverished families but the use
of topics such as food and journeys allow children
to identify similarities with their own lives.
Following from the
reading, students
looked at different
pancakes from around
the world, they then
made the “Kenyan
Pancake’ that Mama
Panya made in the story
and compared this with
what the students eat at
home. The students then used their own
knowledge of pancakes, procedural writing and
wrote their own ‘Ultimate Pancake Recipe’.
Athletics Carnival
This Friday is our Athletics Carnival; please
