HYDROSPHERE

The hydrosphere is composed of all of the water on or near the earth.

. Hydrosphere - Ocean CurrentsWe can start to find some answers in the next sphere - the hydrosphere. The hydrosphere contains all water found in, on, and over the Earth, including rivers, lakes, oceans, and even water vapor in the atmosphere. The ocean is the major element of the hydrosphere. It is not just a still body of water, but is constantly in motion, as seen here.

Why Study the Carbon Cycle?

Carbon is an element that is essential for life as we know it. Living organisms obtain carbon from their environment. When they die, carbon is returned to the non-living environment. However, the concentration of carbon in living matter (18%) is about 100 times higher than the concentration of carbon in the earth (0.19%). The uptake of carbon into living organisms and return of carbon to the non-living environment are not in balance

All the water in its various forms, present in all the components of Earth’s environment together constitutes the hydro sphere. Most of the water is present as liquid water on the Earth’s surface and some liquid water is present underground.

Biosphere

he biosphere is the biological component of earth systems, which also include the lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere and other "spheres"

Page 7: Hydrosphere and water pollution

The hydrosphere is the liquid water component of the Earth. It includes the oceans, seas, lakes, ponds, rivers and streams. The hydrosphere covers about 70% of the surface of the Earth and is the home for many plants and animals.

The oceansThe ocean serves two main purposes in the climate system. First, it is a large reservoir of chemicals that can contribute to the greenhouse effect in the atmosphere and energy absorbing 90% of the solar radiation which hits the surface.

Water pollution occurs when a body of water is adversely affected due to the addition of large amounts of materials to the water. The sources of water pollution are categorized as being a point source or a non-source point of pollution.

Page 16: Hydrosphere and water pollution

Point sources of pollution occur when the polluting substance is emitted directly into the waterway. A pipe spewing toxic chemicals directly into a river is an example.

Page 17: Hydrosphere and water pollution

It is a well known fact that water gives life. We cannot survive without water. However, because it is easily accessible to us, we do not take responsibility to control the misuse of this life saving gift. We not only over or misuse water, but also tend to make it dirty. The situation becomes worst, when we all are aware of its importance as well as the consequences created by polluting it.
