As refiners worldwide see remarkable fluctuationin crude oil prices and continued demand forclean transportation fuels, a sound knowledge ofHydroprocessing (HP) technology and its impacton the refinery is essential.

This course provides an in-depth yet practicalreview of hydrotreating technology in a crude oilrefinery. The lecturers will cover topics rangingfrom the chemistry of hydrotreating to adiscussion of the design of commercial processesand reactors.

The programme will address diesel, jet fueland naphtha hydrotreating, feed pre-treatmentfor conversion units and consider hydrogenproduction and purification.

W H O S H O U L D A T T E N D ?

ERTC Hydrotreating is a comprehensive coreskills course for professionals dealing with allaspects of the Hydrotreating units.

The course will be highly valuable to allengineers involved in the operation and designof Hydrotreating facilities.

Additionally, the course will be useful to anytechnical personnel wishing to gain a perspectiveof how Hydrotreating fits into the operation ofa complete refining plant. Those who areexperienced in other fields and seek a review ofthe fundamentals of Hydrotreating will also findthis course most beneficial.

C O U R S E P R E S E N T E R

Richard Moore-Coulson is a consultant who hasworked in oil refining technology for over 30years and has covered many of the differentprocesses present in Oil Refineries. His mostrecent experience has been over 6 years on tworefining sites, followed by two years at theengineering and technology centre at BPworking with the Hydroprocessing TechnologySupport Team.

Richard was a Section Head at SRC Refinery inSingapore in charge firstly of Technical SupportEngineers and then Process DevelopmentEngineers. The refinery had then CDU, VDU,HCU, Mild HCU, Visbreaker, CRU, HPUs, KeroMerox, Diesel HDTs, SRU. He was personallyinvolved in the choice and replacement ofcatalysts for all the hydroprocessing units.

Most recently, he has given support to four BPrefineries in hydrotreating technology, and washeavily involved in changes needed for ‘cleanfuels’ technology, both diesel and gasoline. Thisinvolved minimising the CAPEX and choosingsuitable catalysts and operational changes toprocess more difficult feeds and higher severityoperation. It also involved choosing technologyand licensors for new hydroprocessing units.

Richard was BP’s representative in FosterWheeler’s office during the conceptual and initialdesign stages of EXOR1 refinery in Indonesia. In BP’s technical centre he co-ordinated theproposal for a new refinery in Thailand, alsoproviding the process concept and design for theproposal. He was part of BP’s ProjectManagement Team in JGC Yokohama office forthe front-end design and first stages of detaileddesign of the Singapore Refinery CDU2 complexdevelopment.

Richard obtained a Master of Engineeringdegree, is a Member of the Institution ofChemical Engineers and is a Chartered Engineer.

The petroleum industry uses Hydrotreating as a primary process for quality improvement to meet finalfuel specifications as well as feed preparation for many intermediate processing units.

This course covers the core elements of Hydrotreating technology. Key variables that affect productyields and properties are described and their impact on the optimisation of the unit operation discussed.A framework is presented for troubleshooting operating problems and, throughout this discussion, participants are encouraged to describe their specific challenges.

The scope of the course includes the core of most Hydrotreating problems and attempts to coversolutions useful to design and operating engineers. Concerns associated with processing for clean fuelsare covered. This course will provide an overview of the diverse nature of the Hydrotreating processes, depending on the feedstocks used, products made and the environmental issues.

The course is designed to complement and supplement material presented in other ERTC coursesand conferences.
