The Apostles’ doxology

• What does doxology mean?

• Glorification (to glorify God in His saints)

• When do we sing the doxologies?

• During vespers (asheya) after the litany of the departed and matins (baker) after the litany of the oblations on Sunday or the traveling on weekdays

Page 3: Hymns for the fast of the Apostles - St. Pachomiusstpachomius.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Hymns-for-the...•Acts 1:24-26 ^And they prayed and said, You, O Lord, who know the hearts

• Where did it come from?

• Did someone make it up? • Matthew 10:1-14

“And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Cananite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him”

Page 4: Hymns for the fast of the Apostles - St. Pachomiusstpachomius.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Hymns-for-the...•Acts 1:24-26 ^And they prayed and said, You, O Lord, who know the hearts

• Acts 1:24-26 “And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the

hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25 to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26 And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”

• Psalm 19:3, 4 “There is no speech nor language

Where their voice is not heard. Their line* has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.”

• Luke 10:1 “After these things the Lord appointed seventy** others

also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. ”

* Line appears as “voice” in other translations ** The oldest Coptic manuscripts says that the number is actually 72. New international version

says 72. St Ambrose also says that the number is actually 72.

Their voices went forth, onto the face of the whole earth, and their words have reached, the ends of the world. Pray to the Lord on our behalf, my masters and fathers the Apostles, and the seventy two disciples, that He may forgive us our sins.

• Where did it come from? • The word praise appears in many places in the Bible. Ex: Psalm 147:

1 “Praise the LORD!For it is good to sing praises to our God; For it is pleasant, and praise is beautiful.”

• The word glory also appears in many places in the Bible Ex: John 12:23 “But Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.”

• The Ascension Luke 24: 50 “And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven.”

• Sending the Holy Spirit Acts 2: 1-4 “When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Page 17: Hymns for the fast of the Apostles - St. Pachomiusstpachomius.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Hymns-for-the...•Acts 1:24-26 ^And they prayed and said, You, O Lord, who know the hearts

• Making the two into one. Ephesians 2:14-16 “ 14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, 15 having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments

contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace,16 and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity.”

• The word worship appears in many places in the Bible. In this verse also all the nations come before God. Ex: Rev 7:9-12 “9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures, and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might, Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”

Page 18: Hymns for the fast of the Apostles - St. Pachomiusstpachomius.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Hymns-for-the...•Acts 1:24-26 ^And they prayed and said, You, O Lord, who know the hearts

• Lord of all. Acts 10:34-36 “34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. 36 The word which God sent to the children of Israel, preaching peace through Jesus Christ—He is Lord of all.”

• Three in One, 1 John 5:7 “For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.”
