I am t rying t o retype my ent ire BCB b g . TWO sections are already done, one for TAs & t h e other f o r Us, but the major one for US & Canacian is a pain & is tak- ing quite a while mainly because of bulk. Many NRClers are already aware of the 3EO-Alert broadcast over WWV and I&-VH daily, but very few indeed are aware t h a t :6U and WWMI a lso broadcast propagation forecasts f o r the North Atlantic TA paths. These announcements refer to the propwation paths in the North Atlantic Area such as Washington to London, and N e w York to Berlin. The actual forecasts a re prepared by ESSA Telecommunication Services Center in Boulder, Coloradoj and are, of necessity, only short-tenn.

These boradcasts are issued during the l a s t half of every f i f t h minute of each hour on W..W and ki .WI on 2.5, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, and 20.0 MHz, and are revised dai ly as follows: 0500, ll00 ( 1200 between November 1 and A p d . 30 ), 1700 and 2300 GMT.

The forecast i s desizned to give i t s users a brief and simplFfied idea of the condition of the ionosphere a t the r e s l a r time of issue ( each of the above times i s actually a lltime of issue" ), and a forecast of conditions expected to prevai l durinz the ensuing s i x hours. These forecasts are based on accurmiLated data from a worldwide network of geophysioal and so la r obser- vatories.

.hon,o the types of data intezrated into the propagation forecas t are such items as upper atmospheric radio soundings, reception data, so la r a c t i v i t y and geophysical conditions. These data are then combined re la t ive t o the usual conditions, and conpiled into a coded forecast, which i s then broadcast in International IIorse Code. The key to t h i s coding system appears below:

D I S m m GXVJZS NORU GRADES llWt ( • -- ) "N" (-.) 1. useless (.---- 1 6. fair-to-good (-.... ) 2. very poor ( ..--- ) 7. good (-we=. ) 3. poor ( ...-- ) 8. very good (-a* ) 4. p o o r - ~ - f a i r (....- ) 9. excel lent (---• )

UNSETTLED GR4DES tlun (..-I

5. f a i r (.....I

I f , f o r example, conditions were normal a t the time of the issue of the forecast, but were e ected to deter iorats durinz the following six hours, the forecast *ht be " N T n . I f it were disturbed a t time of issue, b u t expected to improve, the forecast would be "W 6", perhaps.

It l s noted here, t h a t the National Rureau of Standards is currently conductw a survey to determine what chaves should be made in its format fo r ?.p:,v and IWVH. A computerized questionnaire i s available to anyone inter- ested by mailin: your name and address to "tn4V - 1969", N a t i d Bureau of Standards, Boulder, Colorado, 80302. Marry members of the NRC who have already completed and mailed t h i s f o m have added l e t t e r s requesting t h a t broadcasts of the Fredericksburg "A" Index be made, both a s an average f iy re f o r the 2h hours precedinz the t ine of issue as w e l l a s the exact f igure f o r a spec i f ic time pr io r to the forecast issue. These same persons have also requested t h a t some form of correlation be broadcast to r e l a t e pas t GEO- Alert predictione to actual events, and, wherever possible, there effects.

It i s strongly advised tha t any and a l l DXlers interested i n propagation obta3n and complete t h i s questionnaire. W E )

31 aevolut~onar y ogFems~ve In m@ao gw... by Glenn Hauser %

(North American DX'ers tend to regard Cuban stations as pests to De ignored once identified. This may not be justified, considering the diversity of programming built up since the revolution - over 5 networks, 7 provincial nets and 33 local stations. At least the Cuban Government regards them as a force second only Fetelevision for educating and unifying the people. Following are extracts from the 1968 yearbook, "Sonido e Imagen" via Bob Cooper, translated by Glenn llauser)

The majority of local and provincial radio stations in Havana were found to be in a deplorable, and in some cases, ruinous state. Lack of maintenance on these installations was an acute problem jeopardizing their continuing existence. It was decided to relocate them in order to bring about a leap in program quality, more effic- ient maintenance, and a savings in fuel.

The following were moved: Radio Popular, using facilities which had been abandoned for years. Radio Cadena Habana and Radio Internacional were installed in a studio which had been serving as a warehouse for pianos and musical instruments. This building was adapted for dual station operation, and an additional studio was built for dramatic programs.

Then the total rejuvination of Radio Cordon de la Habana was undertaken; and for the final project in Havana, Radio Marianao will be moved to a building with adequate equipment.

But the offensive did not end in Havana: on the Isle of Youth a new building was constructed to house Radio Caribe; in Matanzas, Radio 26 relies on a new recording studio; and in Santiago de Cuba, Radio Siboney and CMKW-Radio Mambi will function with all the advantages of a modern plant. Radio Angulo, in Holuin, is already transmitting from its new location.

Even more plans are in action, including Cadena Agramonte in Camaguey, and stations in Bayamo and Guantanamo, now being installed in new sites. At Cadena Occidental, in Pinar del Rio, work is expanding every day.

Arkane, Editor..

The Cuban Radio Institute's technical department has worked on this project during the entire year... a project whose results are already being realized.

LONG-HAUL DX'ING LIST OF ARTICLES (REPRINTS) CURRFJJTLY AVALWLBLE Part I1

Distance alone i s hardly the name of the game i n th i s hobby: if i t was, half of the Northeastern DX'ers would probably vacation on Midway or Wake each winter. But heavy reporting of long-distance reception i s an indication of C X , and they haven't been that bad lately.

When I X D X dominates DX News, with everyone seemingly logging 4000 mile plus s ta t ion , CX a i n l t bad. By the time one sees dozens of 5000 mile plus reports (with Oahu8s usual 5000 mile reports suddenly running 7000 plus), one even notes them from such d i f f i cu l t c i t i e s as Hew York and Boston. The last eight issues ' of OX News (thru 11/15) make interesting reading with an a i r mileage chart available.

Twelve reports (Wood and Millar) ran over eight thousand miles. A total of 23 (Wood, Mil l a r , and Sadoian) ran over 7000 miles. The 6000 mile mark was reached by 49 reports, wlth Hauser. Pejza, and Hurley joining the l i s t . The l l s t of 5000 mile reports that got i n print i s considerably longer: 110 including Herriman, Conrad, Cooper, Erickson, and Nelson on the l i s t . Hope I d idn ' t miss anyone's reports! (Jay Hurley )

Rodio in the Northern Ireland Troubles - I n the World of Radio feature recently, we mentioned F'lrate s tat ions and

the f a c t t ha t they were being janrmed. There was a Left-wing take over of the Clv i l Rights Movement with it seems the main factor being the l e f t wing extremist group known as the People's Dmoocracy. "Free Belfast1' consists of 45,000 Raman Catholic residents i n the Fal ls Road area of Belfast. The clandestine radio s tat ion Radio Free Belfast t r ied t o beat o f f ic ia l jamming and pmp out propaganda with about 20 members of the organization being involved with the s tat ion and a small newspaper. It appears t ha t the P.D. movement orig originated a t Queens University Belfast, and there was evidence of association with the Revolutionary Socialist Students Federation. The aim of the movement seems t o be the foundation of a "workers soc ia l i s t republicfr.

The n o d reason fo r hamming a radio transmission i s t o prevent views being heard t ha t a r e contrary t o those of the authority of the country concerne concerned, and we f e e l t ha t this i s the nonaally accepted view tha t w i l l be held on t he subject. The P.D. movement was accused i n the Cameron Report of Itinciting d v i l disorder" and previously Radio Belfast had been accused of Itinciting violencelt. T h i s i s the stated reason fo r the jamming. We leave the matter there and say no more.
