PR people could use some PR!!!It was just a decade ago when it was impos-sible to get a glossy or a bio on a recordingartist. Now, it is much easier. In fact, manycompanies have publicists. PR is a wholenew industry for the record business andtracking has become an industry thatsomeday might be bigger than the recordindustry they track. Funny how we get allthose phone calls at RPM asking about thephone number of certain PR firms. It mustbe obvious that those very PR firms need todo some work . . . . on themselves. Well, Ithink RPM has to continue to provide thisservice to the industry, but it is true that ifyou believe in PR, you automatically don'tbelieve in advertising. Is that the profes-sional approach?

You were asking?I must have received half a dozen phonecalls in the last couple of months askingwhere Eartha Kitt product could be ob-tained. Well, in the door this week camethe answer. The Montreal -based Able label, distributed through Trans-Musique, has just

Is it back to square one???Well, the Fox has finally flown the coop, which could leave a lot of business undone. There should be a lot of powerful lobbyinggoing on to keep the pot boiling.

Look who's back in the business!!!It's not official yet but the street buzzhas it that a very large Canadian bookpublishing company is buying a very largeCanadian music publishing firm, one that'sbeen in the business for 35 years.

Class? Anyone? Can you be successful in this industry with-out being overly aggressive and repulsive?Personally, I think so! (EC: You're speakingpersonally now?)

Take a valium and lay down!!Something I wrote last week excited anumber of programming biggies. Well, calm down everybody, it's too late to cryover spilled milk. Just to be historicallycorrect, the RPM 50 Singles chart had noCancon at all in the June 16 issue. I didn'trealize that until last week when it wasbrought to my attention. How is Cancondoing? Only the very elite are having anyreal success. Here it is 14 years later, andthe 30% Canadian content regulationsaren't working, and it's becoming increas-ingly difficult for programmers to findenough Cancon to fulfill their obligation. If it keeps up, the Cancon 30% may have tobe scrapped and considered unsuccessful.Look what happened to pay -TV!!!

Promotion anyone???What 6'5" president of a major recordcompany has just completed a three weekpromotion trip west from Toronto to . .

. . . . where else . . . . Banff? He called onradio stations (EC: That must have been ashock. There are radio stations withindriving distance of Toronto that have neverseen a promo man let alone a president!).He also did store checks.

Is softball good PR?The Ontario Music Industry Softball Leagueis taking the pressure off the lack of summersales (EC: Who says sales are bad? GN andDO are on record as saying this is the best

New RPM look gets plaudits!!!Now that the dust has settled, the word isthat the new look of RPM has met with theapproval of the industry. With a snappier, neater look and a more efficient layout,RPM becomes a very necessary, quick -reference for programmers and those inthe business looking for trade news andinformation. From our front page picksto our new Cancon chart page and the 100Singles chart, most of the reaction has beenpositive. By condensing some of our refer-erence features, we have made room formore news and information. Even thisweek you will notice changes and adjust-ments, and none of this is etched in stone. We still await reaction to some of our moredrastic moves and we will be making furtherchanges, based on your comments. We willalso be announcing new projects and somevery interesting social events directed atthe industry. The most important feature ofRPM is our willingness to react to yoursuggestioni and criticisms. We like to hearfrom you and no letter is ignored.

Hot summer hits!!There are a few stores that are busy sellinghits, and some of them are making hits.Big summer albums will be Pulling RabbitsOut Of A Hat by Sparks, Secrets And Sinsby Luba, and Ian Thomas has a hit withRiders On Dark Horses. Hot singles areBreakin' . . . No Stopping Us by 011ie &Jerry, Karen Kamon's Loverboy, Prince'sLet's Go Crazy, and Spandau Ballet's OnlyWhen You Leave. Effective front rackingand in-store play can make the hits happen.

Bel Air celebrates 7th anniversary! The Bel Air label, under its founder andpresident Bob Cousins, celebrates sevenyears in the business. Bob is a unique pro-moter, who has the ability to get attention, whether it's from the local or provincialgovernment dignitaries, the dailies or thespecialized trade press. He has a handleon Newfielander/country humour and whenhe's promoting an act, which is always, theinitial impact is lasting whether he shocksyou with a gift of a lobster trap, or anautographed volume from the memoirs ofJoey Smallwood. Bob is currently promot-ing releases by Fay Stevens (Playing AFool's Game), Anna Marie (EveryoneReminds Me Of You), George Bennett(Hank Was/George Is), Tony Lawler (Lovin'On Shaky Ground), Sonny Tompkins (KeepMe, a Ray Griff penning), and Dale Bradley, and this is where the lobster trap comes in(I Lobster But Never Flounder). Anothernew act to the Bel Air roster is FrankMeadows from B.C. Bob has just produceda session for Frank at Brampton's OrchardStudios and one of the tracks, Seems Like(I Can't Live With You And I Can't LiveWithout You), was penned by BurtonCummings. Capitol launches campaign on -heavy Cancon release

Toronto: Capitol is currently in the midst of what may be one of the heaviest Can

- con schedules in the company's history,

with the release of several key projects.

The company has already been touting

new releases from Sherry Kean, Red Rider and Dalbello, and have just shipped albums by Luba, Helix and In

tion there are new releases from associated labels including Anthem's Ian Thomas

album, Riders On Dark Horses, and his single, I'll Do You Right, plus a new single

from Rush, titled Body Electric. Let It Go is the first single taken from Luba's album, Secrets And Sins while the debut single from the Helix LP, Razor's Edge, will be Rock You. This is the second

LP on Capitol from the Kitchener -based Helix. The first single from Zappacosta's

self -titled debut will be Runaround. Dalbello's Gonna Get Close To You, the

first single taken from her Whomanfoursays, continues to make impressive national gains

as does Young Things, Wild Dreams (Rock Me), the first single from Red Rider's

Breaking Curfew album. Both singles are making good gains up the RPM 100.

Record Peddler expands with warehouse move

Toronto: The need for larger facilities has prompted The Record Peddler, a national

import and label distributor, to move its warehouse operations to another a much

large facility. While the retail outlet will remain at

their Queen Street east location, the ware- house and head office have been moved to Brant Street.

The Record Peddler began as a small outlet in 1977, carrying primarily deletes,

and have now gone onto become Canada's largest import specialists.

"We stock an enormous quantity of records," noted Peddler's Ben Hoffman,

"We have the biggest catalogue in the country. We carry over 5,000 titles in

albums alone and stock imports not avail- able domestically and catalogue product.

Many of the artists are only known in other countries. Some don't have record deals outside their own countries."

Hoffman suggests that those seeking imports for their recording quality, re- presents a very small figure because of the

price difference between the domestics and imports, stressing that those imports

they are able to obtain before the domestic release, represents a small proportion of

the business. "I'd be surprised if it was even 5 per-

cent," notes Hoffman, "It happens more with 12" singles and EPs."

Hoffman credits college and university radio, and stations from CFNY and Q107

to CKCU, as well as clubs, for exposing

many of the new artists on import labels. Peddler is also experiencing success

with the resurgence of heavy metal, par- ticularly with Venom, Metallics, Motley

Crue, Exciter, Quiet Riot and Twisted Sister.

Paul White increases industry visibilityToronto: After 25 years in various capaci-ties, Paul White remains a leading figure inthe North American entertainment industry. For over 20 years, White held a variety ofposts with Capitol Records in Canada. AsDirector of A&R, he signed Canadian andEuropean acts for the North Americanmarket. He introduced a then unknowngroup, The Beatles, to North America, re-leasing their product in Canada beforeCapitol decided to go with them in the U.S.

White's current activity includes his ownconsulting firm, contributions as entertain-ment editor for Elite Magazine, as well asongoing assignments with TV Ontario,Channel 19 in Toronto.

After leaving Capitol in 1978, Whitejoined Balmur, Anne Murray's managementfirm, as Director of Creative Development.Leaving Balmur in 1980, he became in-volved with Sefel Records, where he wasresponsible for setting up a completedistribution unit for the label. In 1981,White became a consultant to the enter-tainment industry, working with artistssuch as Jane Malton, and Ray St. Germain.

Working with artists was a natural forWhite. While with Capitol he had built upa strong Cancon roster, including acts suchas Malka and Joso, Edmonton's Barry Allen,Pierre Lalonde, Robbie Lane, and The Spar-rows, who later became Steppenwolf.

White recently returned from Albertawhere he was involved in script supervisionfor an as yet untitled Canadian film. For thelast 2 years, until its demise in June of

ON STAGE

by Kevin C. WynneSON SEALSAlbert's Hall - Toronto - July 10/84The first Alligator artist to appear in Canadasince WEA picked up the label, Son Sealsdelivered the blues to a small but apprecia-tive audience at Albert's Hall (BrunswickeHouse). Seats is a big part of that traditionwhich includes such luminaries as B.B.King, Earl Hooker, Buddy Guy, and AlbertKing. The band benefited from the talent ofa strong second guitarist, and did the jobin supporting Seals' fiery solos and throatyvocilt. The man worked up a genuine sweat, something a younger generation of gui-tarists could take their cue from - and re-moved any doubt that this indigenousAmerican music form is on its last legs.

GO GO'SKingswood Theatre - Toronto - July 14/84Another band which would probably sellrecords if given proper airplay. Programmersshould take a long hard listen to this group, they're a strong live act, with great material. The problem probably lies in the perennialbias against women who think they can rockout as well as men. It's really a shame; howmany bogus L.A. outfits are there aroundflogging derivative commercial dreck withrecord deals who you can hear every houron the hour? Support act INXS left every-one feeling satisfied, at least for the timebeing. The band returns to the Torontoarea for an August 2nd date at the ConcertHall, and shows every sign of increasingtheir status as an international force in pop.

1984, he was a member of the permanentjuding panel for the Annual du MaurierSearch For Stars contest. This involvedtravelling coast to coast auditioning nearly2,000 artists. White has also been a con-sultant to Colours, a Toronto -based firmspecializing in wardrobe, makeup, andimage buildup for singers and artists.

While at Capitol in the '60s, White isgenerally credited with successfully re-leasing product in Canada, in addition toThe Beatles, in advance of the U.S. parent.Other acts he broke here included TheHollies, The Dave Clark Five, The Animals,Herman's Hermits, Cliff Richard, and BillyJ. Kramer. He was also successful with MORacts such as Des O'Connor, Frankie Vaughan, and Vera Lynn.

MRB's national visibilitymaking impressive gainsToronto: The Midnight Rodeo Band, known by many as simply MRB, are spread-ing their image as a powerhouse countryband eastward from their Vancouver base. They have been busy with recent appear-ances at the Calgary Stampede and atCFGM's (Toronto) Picnic at Molson Park, situated near Barrie, Ontario.

According to vocalist/writer Ed Moly-ski, the band has spent most of the past 2years doing dates in Alberta. At this year'sStampede, MRB did 4 shows nightly, shar-ing the stage with 3 other bands. The dateswere over a 10 day period and nightly at-tendance reached 1,400.

The CFGM date, held on July 29, sawMRB perform a 35 -minute set, sharing thestage with acts such as Johnny Lee andLarry Gatlin.

MRB's debut RCA release was producedin Vancouver; the follow-up, MRB 2, wasproduced in Toronto by Mike Francis. Theband has put together enough materialfor another session, although a localehas not been confirmed.

The most recent single release fromMRB is Love Comes In Twos, backed byBicycle Sunday, both Molyski originalsand included on their MRB 2 label.

HELIX - RockWelkin' The Razor's EdgeCapitol ST -12362-FThe 4th album for this band - two producedindependently and one prior for Capitol, contains the usual nuggets of rock and rollwisdom: live fast and hard, and squeeze asmuch rockin' in as possible. This is one ofthose "overnight success after 10 years oftrying" cases which has reaped the benefitsof a resurgence of interest in hard rock andheavy metal. This isn't to detract from theproduct at all, a solid hard rock effortwhose only drawback is the Inclusion ofInappropriate material such as GimmeGimme Good Lovin' and Make Me DoAnything You Want. Helix have experiencedstrong success in Europe, and this packageshould further their profile in both NorthAmerica and abroad; a band to perhapssucceed where other Canadian acts havefallen short of the mark. - KCW

Although a former King Bee,don't expect to hear only rock 'n rollhere. The first single to be pulled Is WeGot Love, a mixture of rock and reggaeresulting In a catchy dance piece. The Big

Support dates with Kiss.In 1983 have resulted in Gene Simmonsproducing this record, and Ace FrehleV,Paul Stanley, and Eric Carr guesting on onetrack each. The singer herself has referred tothe set as an anthem rock or tribal rock;in either case, It's loud, anxious, and un-compromising. Drummer T.C. Summer months stillpacks punch for WEAToronto: WEA's Vice President, Sales,Garry Newman, reports that WEA still hasseveral albums from major names to bereleased in August and late summer.

Ready to go and considered very hotare Last In Line by Ronnie James Dio,VOA by Sammy Hagar, and Pulling RabbitsOut Of A Hat by Sparks.

August will see the release of a soloalbum from Fleetwood Mac member Lind-say Buckingham, titled Go Insane. Bucking-ham produced, arranged and wrote all thematerial for this Elektra release. The titletrack has been taken as the first single.

Stephen Stills will release his Atlanticalbum, Right By Your Side, by mid -August.The album is highlighted by the guest ap-pearance on three cuts by former Led Zep-pelin and Yardburd guitarist Jimmy Page.

Fad Gadget's Gag has been released andit's considered a very hot summer item. The album will include the 12" importhit, Collapsing New People.

Also coming up are albums from FrankSinatra, Donna Summer, Talking Heads,AC/DC, Ann Mortifee, Manteca.

Georgia's R.E.M. displaysnew sound with deep rootsToronto: R.E.M. is arguably the most criti-cally acclaimed American band since X.Demonstrating influences as varied as NeilYoung and The Velvet Underground, theband has forged a unique and accessiblesound in the course of 2 albums. Their 1983debut LP, Murmur, released by I.R.S. anddistributed in Canada by A&M, made alasting impression on music critics both inNorth America and abroad. Murmur garner-ed the Album of The Year designation inthe Rolling Stone Critics' Poll, with thesame poll deeming R.E.M. worthy of theBest New Artist moniker.

The band comprises drummer Bill Berry, vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist PeterBuck, and bassist Mike Mills. When inToronto recently for an R.E.M. date atthe Concert Hall, Mike Mills spoke withRPM about the band's origins and ob-jectives.

Kevin Wynne: What has the situation beenin Georgiaover the last 5 years or so as faras musical activity is concerned?

Mike Mills: Aside from the more traditionalforms of music, there's a lot going on. TheB52s were the first to break out, and thereare a lot of good young bands playing inclubs where the owners are willing to giveunknowns a chance. Athens, in particular, has a lot of young people with the collegeand such, so you've got a constant comingand going of people.

How would you assess the band's sound? Ican imagine those who would tag you as arevivalist band of some sort.

We're certainly not a revivalist band, andthere aren't any groups which we con-sciously try to pattern ourselves after.Peter (Buck) and I admire a lot of differentpeople . . . look at ABBA for example. There's a band who know how to write agood pop song. In a pop format you can sayit all in under 4 minutes.

Does the band write with radio in mind?

We definitely don't write for radio. What wedo is a result of not wanting to sound con-trived . . . the music is simply the product ofthe four of us writing together.

Will you ever add a fifth member for liveshows?

The current lineup has worked successfullyso far, and I can see it remaining as such.Despite everything else, we just want tomake music that makes us feel good.

The Concert Hall date was, by all appear-ances, a success for R.E.M., opened byDream Syndicate, with the band runningthrough material from Murmur, as well astheir current LP release, Reckoning. Thelatter has already enjoyed 16 weeks onthe RPM 100. - KCW

Georgia's R.E.M. displays new sound with deep roots

Toronto: R.E.M. is arguably the most criti- cally acclaimed American band since X.

Demonstrating influences as varied as Neil Young and The Velvet Underground, the

band has forged a unique and accessible sound in the course of 2 albums. Their 1983 debut LP, Murmur, released by I.R.S. and

distributed in Canada by A&M, made a lasting impression on music critics both in North America and abroad. Murmur garner-

ed the Album of The Year designation in the Rolling Stone Critics' Poll, with the

same poll deeming R.E.M. worthy of the Best New Artist moniker.

The band comprises drummer Bill Berry, vocalist Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter

Buck, and bassist Mike Mills. When in Toronto recently for an R.E.M. date at

the Concert Hall, Mike Mills spoke with RPM about the band's origins and ob-

jectives.

Kevin Wynne: What has the situation been in Georgia over the last 5 years or so as far as musical activity is concerned?

Mike Mills: Aside from the more traditional forms of music, there's a lot going on. The B52s were the first to break out, and there

are a lot of good young bands playing in clubs where the owners are willing to give

unknowns a chance. Athens, in particular, has a lot of young people with the college and such, so you've got a constant coming and going of people.

How would you assess the band's sound? I can imagine those who would tag you as a

revivalist band of some sort.

We're certainly not a revivalist band, and there aren't any groups which we con-

sciously try to pattern ourselves after. Peter (Buck) and I admire a lot of different

people . . .

look at ABBA for example. There's a band who know how to write a

good pop song. In a pop format you can say it all in under 4 minutes.

Does the band write with radio in mind?

We definitely don't write for radio. What we do is a result of not wanting to sound con-

trived . . .

the music is simply the product of the four of us writing together.

Will you ever add a fifth member for live shows?

The current lineup has worked successfully so far, and I can see it remaining as such.

Despite everything else, we just want to make music tnat makes us feel good.

The Concert Hall date was, by all appear- ances, a success for R.E.M., opened by

Dream Syndicate, with the band running through material from Murmur, as well as

their current LP release, Reckoning. The latter has already enjoyed 16 weeks on

the RPM 100. - KCW

111111 CBC showcases bluegrass CBC Radio will take a musical and bio-

graphical look at bluegrass through The Ocean Limited on Aug. 25 and Sept. 1

(7:05 pm (8:05 AT, 6:35 NT). Host Bill Stevenson will be joined by the 72 -year

old "Father of Bluegrass" Bill Monroe, the Bluegrass Four from New Brunswick,

London Ontario's Dixie Flyers, and The Ladies Choice Bluegrass Band from Nova Scotia.

Professional approach pays off! Country music has always suffered from a

lack of good managers, and the GOOD that exist today can be counted on one hand.

Brian Ferriman has emerged as a very pro- fessional packager of recording acts and product and he is beginning to reap the benefit through a very close and rare re-

lationship with country programmers. His Savannah label, distributed by Quality Records, is perhaps one of the most visible

of independent labels in the business. His two acts, Terry Sumsion and Terry Carisse

have scored tremendous airplay with their new releases and what's even more of an

eye-opener is the resultant sales at retail level. Brian has, through dogged deter-

mination, dispelled the myth that record retailers aren't interested in country pro-

duct . . .

and he has singles and album sales to prove it.

Mercey Brothers have a follow-up The Mercey released their

folloW-up to Leader Of The Band, titled Love At Last Sight. Penny Perkins, who

handles bookings and promotion for the MBS label is obviously bubbling over with

enthusiasm as she writes: "The single is fantastic

. . . a definite number one."

The Merceys have just wound up a three day engagement at the World Youth Cham-

pionship Baseball Tournaments in Kinder- sley, Saskatchewan, where they also got to sing the National Anthem at one of the

games.

Cousin's promo expertise launches Bradley debut Brampton, Ont.: Dale Bradley makes an impressive move into the business with his

novelty/country single release, I Lobster But Never Flounder, described by producer Bob Cousins as ".

. . a fishy tail that's im-

possible to listen to with a straight face."

The flip, Toast To An Island, is a Kevin Rowsell original, described as "a rare find

in today's market . . .

one that expresses eloquently the feelings of thousands of

east coast people living far from their home." Says Bradley, "Newfoundlanders

have been waiting for a long while for a good song about their island. I think this

is the one they've been waiting for."

The single has been released on Cousins' Bel Air label and has already caused a stir

in parts of the Maritimes. Cousins has pulled all stops in his promotional activities to

bring this record home. The single was produced at Orchard Studios in Brampton. Born in St. Albans, Newfoundland, Bradley moved west to Ontario at age 17,

and raised a family in the course of working outside the music business. Performing was

restricted to playing in local bands and at parties. He was making one of these rare

appearances at a club when he was dis- covered by Cousins who asked him to ap-

pear at the Brampton Jamboree. The audi- ence reaction to his performance led to his

Bel Air release. The arrangements for both sides were

done by Wendell Fergus, one of the owners of Orchard Studios.

West Coast's Rana label debuts with Ryan release

Vancouver: Terilyn Ryan is on release with her latest Rana single, Lovers And

Love, backed with Can't Help Myself, both Ryan originals. Although the young singer

has been on the circuit for several years, it wasn't until 1975 when her music career

Terilyn Ryan, Rana recording artist.

began to develop. Joining the Hair Trigger Cowboys led to an association with her

current producer Billy Cowsill. The Cow- boys featured singer/songwriter Bryan Fus-

tukian, and was a clearing house for numer- ous musicians in Western Canada. Fustukian has since gone on to enjoy a solo career.

Ryan's next move was into the solo arena, where after a four year stint, she

garnered a large -sized following through- out Alberta. She relocated to Northern

B.C., joining forces with the Bring It Home Band, and in 1982, she moved to Van-

couver, intent on recording her original material. Her first single, One Hour Away,

backed with Blue Mountain Skies, released in 1983, gained her a foothold in the

national scene. Distribution on the new single is being

handled in B.C. and Alberta by Vancouver's One -Stop.

Ryan is expected to return to the studio in August to record the remainder of an

album slated for a fall release, after which a tour will be put together.

Westwood One offers Future Hits via satellite

Toronto: Creative Broadcast Programmes has announced the availability of Future

Hits, a one hour satellite radio program hosted by Radio & Records' CHR Editor,

Joel Denver. CBP, as the representative for the American Westwood One radio network,

syndicates all radio programming for the network in Canada. Future Hits is unique, in

that it will be the first major ongoing pro- gram available only through satellite relay.

to Brian Lampert, Manager of Syndicated Programming for CBP, the

Future Hits program has been offered to Canadian stations equipped to receive

signals via satellite, with the program being made available in a taped format for those

stations unable to do so. Twelve stations have been signed to date, and Lampert

anticipates 30 to 40 stations to go with

Dodson/Tyrrel singles continue success pattern

Toronto: Mary Lynn of Marigold Produc- tions, reports no break in programmer a-

ceptance for Rich Dodson's latest release, Givin' It Up For Love. The single has been added to over 160 playlists nationally since

its May 1st release. Brian Tyrrell's latest single, I Feel It, is also showing good pro-

grammer response across Canada. Both singles have been shipped into

the U.S., and are showing positive response from U.S. programmers as well as being given a pick in the U.S. trades. Releases

are pending in the U.K., New Zealand, and Australia.

Marigold is readying a Best Of package featuring 10 songs penned by Dodson and released as singles since his departure from

The Stampeders. Apparently, Marigold has received requests from programmers, and

members of the public for a Dodson LP.

European success for Star-Scape Singers

Toronto: The Star-Scape Singers, under the direction of Kenneth G. Mills, recently returned to Canada from a successful 3

- month tour of Europe, which included

concerts in France, Switzerland, Italy, and Ireland. As a result of their success, the Singers' music is now being heard over 6

major European radio networks, as well as worldwide broadcasts over Radio Vatican.

The ensemble was formed in 1977 by its music director and conductor, Kenneth G. Mills. The music is performed primarily a

cappella, and the compositions are based on Mills' poetry.

The Star-Scape singers are currently on release with a 3 -volume series of albums

digitally recorded live on tour in 1983. The shows were at France's Chateau d'Ambroise,

as well as St. Alban's Church (Basel), and Zwingli Church (Schaffhausen) in Switzer-

land. The release label is Sun-Scape Records of Toronto.

Their reception in the course of the European tour afforded the ensemble re -

dates, and recordings done during the tour will be released in the fall of this year.

the program by the end of this year. CBP will offer a concert series through

the same channels in September. lei ILI---1-11A111,11
