I am a baptized Roman Catholic, and an American citizen of Polish heritage. This is how I defined myself, at least in my younger years. However, as time goes on and we grow and mature, we begin to see ourselves in other ways as well. As we move out more into the world, we begin to view ourselves in much broader terms. Our particular ethnic, religious, cultural and civic roots are precious and will always be important to us, but, as T.S. Eliot once said: “Home is where we start from.” I have come to understand this to mean that in the years, the decades, as our time here on earth unfolds, life becomes more complicated. Our daily experiences alter our perspective. We realize things are not as clear-cut or obvious as we might have previously thought.

For example, I grew up in a very close family. In a very structured setting. In the neighborhood I lived in as a child, we were all one kind. Practically everyone I knew, all of us, shared a common ethnicity, religion, cultural background and set of values. I cherish my roots. They were a great gift. My origins provided me stability. But my roots, my origins, while they are precious to me, are merely the place I started out from.

This is true for all of us. We take our background, ethnicity, neighborhood, country and faith which serves to give us a particular slant on the world, and, with that, some people constitute our community, while others, perhaps initially, do not. But that’s where we start from. Eventually we grow, change, move, meet new people, some people share our background, but still others don’t. They are of a different nationality, ethnicity, skin color, religion, or different lifestyles.

Since our country is “the great melting pot” we share our nation, our cities, our neighborhoods with people of different cultures and backgrounds. This hopefully leads us to realize that those who may appear outwardly different from us are all sons and daughters of the same God; they are our brothers and sisters who have lives just as real, important and precious as those of our own ethnicity, nationality,

and religious background. We should not make idolatry out of our youthful exuberance that we are special, that our own skin color or background gives us a unique and privileged status.

Our world is globalizing at a dizzy pace and countries, neighborhoods and churches are becoming ever-more pluralistic and diverse ethnically, linguistically, culturally and religiously. Our country, neighborhoods, workplaces and churches are literally taking on a different face. The old-sheltered communities that gave us our roots are disappearing and for many this is scary, and the temptation is to dig in our heels in order to preserve the past. This just won’t work. Time moves forward, not backward. No one has yet been able to concoct, devise or invent a time machine which can transport someone back to another era.

We can cherish our heritage, country, mother tongue, culture, faith and church of our roots, while at the same time, we are more than capable of being altruistic, charitable, noble, and offer warmth, hospitality and kindness to those who are of different roots. Home is where we start from. It is from our wonderful families that we lay down roots, that we’re called to stretch our hearts, religiously, ethnically, culturally so that everyone is embraced as family. For as the Scriptures plainly tell us: “Do not oppress an alien, for you yourselves were once aliens in a foreign land” (Exodus 22:21).

It is extremely gratifying to see that, after having made our CSA target goal of $165,162, people are following through and honoring pledges and/or making donations to the CSA. This is perhaps due, at least to some small degree, to what was mentioned several weeks ago when giving the financial state of the parish report at all the weekend masses. In that report, reference was made to the fact that since St. Paul of Tarsus had

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS CHOIR

This year we would like to have a Children’s Christmas Choir sing at the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass.

The ages for this group will be 1st through 5th Grade. We will have 6 rehearsal times, and they will all take place before either Religious Education sessions or Home Teach sessions. The dates of the rehearsals are as follows:

• Home Teach: November 10 and December 1 at 5:45 pm.

• Religious Ed: November 29, 30, and December 6, and 7 at 5:30 pm.

Rehearsals are 30 minutes, and attendance at two rehearsals is mandatory. A sign-in sheet will be made available at each rehearsal. If a child misses a rehearsal on their regular CCD night, they may attend one of the other rehearsals and sign-in on the attendance sheet for that evening. On December 24 they will sing at the 4:00 pm Mass, and they must be in church ready to sing by 3:30 pm. We hope that your child will be excited to participate in Music Ministry that day! Watch for more information and details as we get closer to the first rehearsal date, November 10th.

reached the target goal that was set for us by the Archdiocese, going forward 100% of all monies that are received will be deposited in the parish savings account.

As you are perhaps aware, when you give your weekly donation to the parish, 7% of whatever amount you give is sent downtown to the Archdiocese. That is the standard operating procedure for each and every parish in the AoD. And while it is true that if you give a once a year at Christmas, 100% of the money from the Christmas collection remains in the parish, but that money is still factored in and used to calculate the target goal for the following year’s CSA. There is just something emotionally satisfying, at least on the part of some, in knowing 100% of their donation remains in the parish and is not used to assess the target goal for the next CSA campaign.

To all those who have given to the CSA, thank you once again for your generous support. If you have not given to the CSA and wish to do so at this time, you will both be supporting the parish and simultaneously avoiding the 7% “tax” that was referred to in the previous paragraph.

Deacon Mark Rybinski St. Paul of Tarsus Church 41300 Romeo Plank Road Clinton Township, MI 48038

October 6, 2021

Wanted to take a minute to thank you and the parishioners of St. Paul of Tarsus Church for the generosity and the outpouring of love for our animals and staff on Sunday, October 3rd during the Blessings of the Pets. The support with bags of food and monetary will help our shelter take care of the many animals we currently house. It was a pleasure talking to many of you about the shelter and the animals we have for adoption.

If you were not there and missed it we hope to see you next year. I did share the story that when we changed our kennels in the shelter, we asked Deacon Mark to come and bless them before the first animal entered. I am happy to once again say, that because of this we have managed to gladly report a 98% save rate in the shelter. You are all welcome to visit us at any time. Think about a shelter animal for your next companion.

Yours in Christ,

Kenneth D. Kempkens, Director [email protected]

In today’s Gospel we see a scribe using the Socratic method of testing Jesus. The Socratic method involves asking a series of questions to prove or disprove a point, or to credit or in this case an attempt to discredit a person or position. Typically, in the case of Jesus, it was used as an attempt to trap Jesus with his own words.

St. Mark, the Evangelist, tells us that, “One of the scribes came to Jesus and asked him, ‘Which is the first of all the commandments?’” Jesus replied, “The first is this: Hear O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” This is known as the Great Shema. Then Jesus gave the scribe the second greatest commandment, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no greater command than these.” The scribe concedes when he says to Jesus that what he has said “Is worth more than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Jesus acknowledges the scribes’ understanding by saying to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” Now how is this for an ending... “And no one dared to ask him any more questions.”

That last line in the Gospel triggered a memory of mine. It brought me back to when I watched the 1973 movie The Paper Chase starring Timothy Bottoms as James Hart, a first year law student at Harvard, and John Houseman as Professor Charles Kingsfield. Professor Kingsfield always used the Socratic method in his teaching of contract law to his students, one of which was James Hart. Professor Kingsfield said at the beginning of the term, “You come in with a skull full of mush and leave thinking like a lawyer.” His teaching style confounded and at times confused his students. Kingsfield always had a follow-up question, usually ending up with the student not being able to answer his last question. However, upon one occasion James Hart was able to silence the great Professor Kingsfield, just like Jesus silenced the scribes and the crowd.

Questioning is a good thing as long as its end is knowledge or affirmation. It’s a bad thing when it is used as a device to deceive. It’s good to ask questions because without asking and receiving answers we remain blind to matters that are important, such as matters of faith and morals. Notice that is precisely what Jesus is answering in today’s Gospel.

Prayer can be the best form of questioning and asking God, as well as consulting your priest, deacon, or other scholar or catechist. I know that at times my response was, “I don’t know but I’ll find out.” When that happens it’s a two-fer because two people get answers to questions that they didn’t know. But, this I do know, that God is up to our questions and that he will give us his answers and in addition his...

Peace, Love, and Blessings,

Deacon Marc

THE DAILY EXAMEN OF STEWARDSHIP

“Stewardship” can get a bum rap these days. When folks hear the term “stewardship” from the pulpit, their eyes tend to kind of glaze over. “Here’s Father asking for more money,” they groan inwardly, “Get ready for the passing of the pledge cards.”

Christ refutes this idea when he gives us what he calls the greatest commandments — instructing us to love God and to love our neighbor. Now, Christ is a man who chose his words carefully. He meant exactly what he said — and he didn’t say that the greatest commandments were to tithe and to give money to charity. If he had wanted stewardship to be only about money, he would have said so.

Sometimes we are indeed called to show our love for God and neighbor in the form of a financial gift. But the concept of Everyday Stewardship — living mindfully in prayer, grateful for our blessings, and gracious to our neighbors, committed to God, and accountable to each other — is about so much more.

I propose a twist on the long-held practice of the “Daily Examen” — a pious devotion wherein, at day’s end, we go over the events of the last 24 hours and discern God’s will. A Daily Examen of Stewardship might contain questions like this:

How did I love God today? In whom did I love Him?

What did God give me today? With whom did I share it? What did I give to Him?

To whom did I reach out today? Who reached out to me? Where was God on my list of priorities today? First? Second? Third, fourth?
