He has completed his responsibilities at the school and he will be departing from the parish on January 18, 2021. This request has been approved by the Bish- op of Peoria. Please see his accompa- nying letter. I take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Father Rose for his willingness to undertake the responsibilities of school principal during this past semester. Being a school principal is often a difficult and stressful undertaking – all of which is mag- nified during a pandemic. We owe Father a debt of gratitude and we will always be appreciative of his time spent serving the Catholic Community in Galesburg. I have contacted Dr. Sharon Weiss, Superintendent of Schools, to assist with the transitioning of leadership at the school. From our discussions, she has asked Mr. Jerry Sanderson and Dr. Susan Stolt, Associate Superintendents, to provide faith, aca- demic, and financial leadership for the second semester. Mr. Sanderson and Dr. Stolt will be sharing more details about their on-site responsibilities as they assume their role as interim co- principals with the goal of interviewing and hiring a new princi- pal in the spring or early summer of 2021. Please be assured that Costa Catholic Academy will continue its fine reputation for strong faith formation and academic achieve- ment. The values and traditions of the school will not change, and with the grace of God, remain true to its “dedication to the whole child, body, mind, spirit, and community.” We look forward to returning to school with online learning on Wednesday, January 6th , and with diocesan approval to return to in-person instruction on Monday, January 11th . How good it will be to see the students back in their classrooms the week of January 11th ! Please keep checking your emails as Mr. Sander- son and Dr. Stolt will be sending more details and school up- dates through our student information system. Let us continue to keep Father Rose, our school and parishes in our prayers as you will certainly be in mine. In the heart of Christ, Fr. Our Vision: Costa Catholic Academy is Dedicated to the Whole Child; Body, Mind, Spirit and Community!

Our Mission: Striving everyday to bring the Living God into the Hearts and Minds of our Students.

Dear Costa Catholic Academy Families, Dr. Sharon Weiss, Superintendent of Schools, with the permission of Bishop Jenky and Bishop Tylka and the support of Father Brokaw, has asked us to serve as interim co-principals until the hiring of a permanent principal can be completed later this spring. Let us take a moment to introduce ourselves:

Jerry Sanderson—this is my 34th year in Catholic education. I served as principal of St. Anne School in East Moline (now known as Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy) from 1994-2001. Since then, I have served the Catholic Diocese of Peoria as Associate Superintendent. My wife Lisa and I have been married for 31 years. We have four children and three grandchildren. I grew up on a farm near Leland, IL. My home parish as a child was St. Theresa Church in Earlville, the home parish of Archbishop John J. Myers. I am currently working on a doctorate in educational leadership at Illinois State University. I look forward to serving the families of Costa Catholic Academy.

Dr. Susan Stolt— this is my 14th year serving Catholic schools. I was the business manager here at Costa Catholic Academy from 2006 until 2012 when I transitioned to the Office of Catholic Schools, first as Financial Services Coordinator, and currently as Associate Superintendent. My husband Jim and I have been married for 41 years. We have two children. Our son is a priest serving in the Archdiocese of Washington, DC, and our daughter is a U.S. Foreign Service Officer. I have lived in Galesburg since 2003 and am a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. I also look forward to serving the families of Costa Catholic Academy.

As interim principals, we thank Father Rose for his faithful leadership this past semester. While his presence in the school will be greatly missed, we want you to know what you can expect as we begin the New Year. Costa Catholic Academy is first and foremost a Catholic school where the values that you promote at home are supported and strengthened by a dedicated faculty and staff. Costa is a community of faith, and that faith will continue to sustain a learning environment where every child can thrive. We will continue to offer a rigorous curriculum aligned with national and state learning standards so that every student has the knowledge and skills they need to succeed now and throughout their lives.

As we balance new routines, we are reminded that we are stronger together! Please know that we are here to support you and your children as they continue to grow in faith and knowledge. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. You can reach us by email at [email protected]. In Christ, Mr. Jerry Sanderson Dr. Susan Stolt

Dear Parishioners, This has been a tough year to say the least! The same holds true for our Annual Diocesan Appeal. So far we have only $32,120 of our reduced goal of $43,298. This is only about 74% of our goal and it's very unusual that we have 100% fol-low through on pledges as situations change and this will most probably be the case this year! Any shortfall has to be made up by the parish and our weekly collections haven't been exactly stellar. If you haven't made a pledge and you have the ability to do so, would you consider making one for this year's ADA? Thank You Mike Wiegand ADA Chairman

As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Poor Box, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering, and you give them reason to believe and to trust.

Dear Costa Catholic Academy and Galesburg Catholic Parish Families, A couple of weeks ago, I asked Bishop Jenky and the Office of Catholic Schools to be relieved of my responsibilities as the principal at Costa Catholic Academy. I have also requested a leave of absence from parish ministry at this time. When Costa Catholic Academy was in need of a principal, I agreed to take on those responsibilities. The day-to-day re-sponsibilities of being a school principal along with the re-sponsibilities of being a parochial vicar for the parish have left me physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted. I ask for your prayers for me during this time, and you may rely upon mine. At the conclusion of my leave of absence, I look forward to having the renewed vigor to take on a new parochial assignment. I will always be grateful for the time I have spent serving the Catholic Community in Galesburg. God love you, Fr. Jacob Rose

Godparent Requirements

Godparents help the parents help the child get to heaven. It is not simply a term of endearment, but rather a special and honored re-sponsibility. Therefore, there are certain requirements set in place for the godparents:

-May not be the parent of the child being baptized -Must be at least 16 years old -Must be a Baptized, practicing Catholic who has received the -Sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation -Regularly attends Mass, follows Church teachings, and lives out the Faith -If married, must be married in the Catholic Church -A baptized non-Catholic may be a Christian Witness along with a Catholic godparent

If a Godparent is Catholic, a Letter of Permission/good standing will need to be obtained from their parish before the baptism.

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

1213 Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua),4 and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Bap-tism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we be-come members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of re-generation through water in the word."5

1216 "This bath is called enlightenment, because those who receive this [catechetical] instruction are enlightened in their understanding . . . ."8 Having re-ceived in Baptism the Word, "the true light that enlightens every man," the person baptized has been "enlightened," he becomes a "son of light," indeed, he becomes "light" himself:9 (Taken from CCC)

Feed My Lambs Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to Feed My Lambs Holiday food baskets collections. Bless you for your generosity. It was a bit different this year with masks, social distanc-ing, and drive through distribution but, with your help, we were able to provide 41 Thanksgiving and Holiday baskets to families in our community. Check out our Facebook page for pics of volunteers packing and dis-tributing the baskets.
