Intelligence Gathering vs.

Searching for a Job

I DON’T WANT TO BE MY ADVISOR! WHAT COMES NEXT?

THIS AFTERNOON IS NOT ABOUT HOW DO I GET A JOB DOING “X”

• Intelligence Gathering vs. Job Search

• Exploring Options

• Confirming areas of interests rather than converting my CV into a resume.

• Figuring out what B is rather than how to get from A to B

INTERNSHIP FAIR – JAN 31

FIGURE OUT WHERE YOU WANT TO GO AND WHY, AND THE REST WILL FOLLOW

• March 22 – During the conference 3-4PM:

• How to Act on Interests piqued by Today’s Event – Andrew Green

• Wednesday April 3rd 4-5PM:

• Translating Your Credentials- Andrew Green

• How do I prepare??

• We recommend you browse our website: www.beyondacademia.org

• Figure out which panels you want to attend because they interest you most:

• !! Not every panel is both AM and PM:

• If you want to see the Entrepreneurs panel, you see them in the AM.

• If you want to see the Non-academic Research panel, see them in the PM.

• Figure out which specific speakers you definitely want to speak to by reading their bio’s under the ‘Speakers’ header on our website.

• If a specific speaker really excites you, then also check out their company’s website, so you can ask even more specific questions.

• From 3-4PM we have different activities. You can find the description of them on our website. It’s good to do this before you come to the conference, so you can focus on the speakers during the conference itself.

BEYOND ACADEMIA: HOW TO PREPARE?

• How do I connect with speakers???

• You will mostly connect to speakers by going up to them during the networking lunch or during the mingling session from 4-6PM.

• You can ask them questions about the conference, and you can ask their contact info for follow-up. They will either give you their business card or you can write down their contact info in your program where we specifically left space for this.

BEYOND ACADEMIA: SPEAKERS?

• What should I wear?

• We recommend attendees to dress ‘business casual’

• For examples: Google Images: Business casual

• Most speakers will be dressed business casual, so you don’t want to show up in your gym outfit, jeans with holes, old sneakers, etc…

BEYOND ACADEMIA: WHAT DO I WEAR?

BEYOND ACADEMIA: DO I BRING ANYTHING?

• Do I need to bring a CV or resume?

• No, don’t feel pressured to bring your CV or resume. The conference is aimed at you figuring out the different options and not for you to necessarily meet your future employer. Once you do sent a CV or resume (down the line) you want to be sure it specifically meets their needs and fits well with the company.

BEYOND ACADEMIA: DO I NEED A LINKEDIN PAGE?

• Do I need a LinkedIn profile?

• No, don’t feel pressured to have this ready before the conference. However, we did create a Beyond Academia group on LinkedIn that a number of our speakers joined, in addition to your fellow PhDs. This means you can easily connect with them, and see their profiles including professional background.

• LinkedIn is also a great tool to showcase your strong points and for you to describe your resume in more detail, get recommendations from other users and follow your favorite company.

• Companies are using LinkedIn more and more, so don’t wait too long with creating your profile!
