What is our future without them? Think about it!

Fifth Sunday of Easter It's not possible for even the most astute law enforcement official to have memorized every law he is subject to. The catalog of federal,

state, and local laws is simply too great. Volumes of legal code cover everything from street parking to espionage, from hunting waterfowl

to truancy, from drunk driving to emission standards. Laws and ordinances abound, yet the vast majority of us go about our business each day without much of a nod to their existence. A speed limit sign may catch our attention (especially if there are flashing lights behind us). We might also keep strict compliance with our local recycling

laws because it makes us feel meritorious. But generally speaking we follow the law without actually knowing all of it.

Today's Gospel takes place during the Last Supper. Judas had left and the other disciples were listening to Jesus. It is in this context that

he gives them a new commandment: "Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will

know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (Jn 13:34-35). There is the law that we must observe if we are to consider ourselves to be disciples, that is, followers of Jesus. We don't need to memorize the entire US Code or all the laws of the state in which we

live to stay in compliance with the law. In the same way it is no longer necessary for us to remember all of the laws and ordinances in the Books of Leviticus, or Numbers, or Deuteronomy. We have a new law given to us by Christ. We are to "love one another." Those three words certainly have far reaching implications. We have guidance on how to follow Christ from the church. In our daily activities we have

to act on what is the most loving thing to do.

A LACK OF CONTROL This has been one of the weirdest seasons that I can remember. It has been unusually cold and particularly rainy. Last week, it was reported that we had more rain in April thus far (7.83 inches) than we had all of last summer. That, combined with some late snow events, cold, and an occasional hot day all combined to make our weather what I first stated: weird. Or, put it another way, just another typical Chicago-land spate of days. It makes me want it to get hot. Really hot. And I don’t like the heat. But, I want to be able to complain about it being too hot for a change, instead of too cold and too damp. I guess we have no control over the weather, though, do we? I think that is what it all boils down to: no control. We do not like to deal with things upon which we have no control. That is why weird weather bothers us. That is why tornadoes and hurricanes bother us. That is why famine, pestilence, terrorism, and wars bother us. We find ourselves slipping out of control in many circumstances and that tends to unhinge us. We tend to look for predictability. We want to be able to control ourselves, to control our environment, to control our world. When we find ourselves out of control, we do not know what to do. The answer is right in front of our eyes: turn to the Lord. Will we gain control over some of these things if we turn to the Lord? No. What we will gain control of, however, is ourselves. We will be able to find an inner peace with which to face the world and all of its uncertainties. The Lord gives us what we need. We found that out with the celebration of Easter — an event by which Jesus Christ destroyed death and restored life. That is what we have been celebrating for the past four weeks. That is what we will be celebrating the next few weeks: triumph. Are we looking for inner peace? Are we looking for that calm in the storm? Are we looking for a way to face our world? We can find that all — and more — in the Lord. Come to the Lord this day. Pour your heart out to Him. Let Him fill you with His peace and His love. The Lord is risen as He said! Alleluia, Alleluia!

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

April 29: Msgr. Casimir Bickauskas (1957) April 30: Rev. Joseph E. Till (2005) May 2: Rev. Ladislaus S. Krause (1967) Rev. Charles J. Seeberger (1969)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A teacher began her lesson with a question, “Boys and girls, what do we know about God?” A hand shot up in the air. “He is an artist!” said the kindergarten boy. “Really? How do you know?” the teacher asked. “You know. Our Father, who does art in Heaven…”

A GOOD BEGINNING We are beginning our annual Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) well. Thank you to those who have already made a pledge to this year’s campaign. For those of you who have not taken the opportunity yet, kindly consider making a generous contribution to this year’s CSA. Remember, our rebate is going to be applied to: 1. Increased security measures for our buildings, and 2. Improving the technology in our buildings. We can only do it with your help!

REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS, TAKE NOTE For those of you looking ahead in your envelope packet, it was brought to our attention that there is no envelope for Sunday, May 12th. There is, however, an envelope in your packet for Ascension Thursday, May 9th. Several years ago, the Feast of the Ascension was permanently moved from Thursday to the Seventh Sunday of Easter. The envelope company had been issuing all our parishioners envelopes for the Feast of the Ascension as well as for the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Since we don’t ask for two contributions for the same day, we asked the company to issue only one envelope for the celebration of the Ascension. They listened to us half-way. They put in one envelope but dated it for Thursday. Kindly use that envelope when you come to church on Sunday, May 12th. Hopefully, they will correct their error next year. Sorry for any confusion this has caused some of you.

My Two Cents Thoughts on Living Stewardship

Fifth Sunday of Easter Today God gives us a new commandment: “love one another.”

We have been invited into a new world order in which we center our lives not only on the “shoulds” and “should nots” of

rules, but on the infinitely more difficult task of loving the unlovable. We can only call ourselves Christ’s disciples if we

let his love into our hearts and love people as he loved them—warts and all—and that will include

letting go of the grudges and hatreds.

Kathi Trotman at (219) 836-4329. We have a new expectant mom, due in September, who is in need of a crib. If you have one that you no longer need, our mother would appreciate it (for safety purposes, please be

certain that you cannot pass a pop can between the crib's rungs). To schedule a pick-up, call Marilyn Glennon at (219) 972-2473.

Please keep our moms & their babies in your prayers.

Sharing Our Faith

Thank you for your support of the 2013 CSA.

There is one more opportunity to make a pledge! Volunteers will be calling parishioners that have not responded to the CSA on

our Call Nights over the next couple of weeks. To avoid a phone call, please contact the Parish Office at 219-836-8610 or

email us at [email protected], or drop your CSA envelope in the collection basket with your total pledge amount or let us

know that you are unable to give this year. You do not have to pay for your total pledge immediately. Most people prefer to pay their CSA pledge in monthly installments. If you choose this method of payment, the diocesan CSA Office

will send you payment reminders in June through January. God bless you for your generosity and thank you for sharing

your faith through the Catholic Services Appeal! PLEASE SUPPORT THE 2013 CSA
