Martin Luther King Jr. was a minister (leader) in a church. He believed that everyone should be treated equally. He believed that just because someone looked different, didn’t mean they should be treated differently. When Martin was alive, some people believed that they were more important because their skin was white. They believed that people who had brown or black skin didn’t deserve to sit in the same seats, drink the same water, or even live in the same places as people with white skin.

Martin Luther King Jr. talked to many people about his dream that his children would grow up in a world where everyone was noticed for how they acted, and who they were on the inside, instead of what they looked like on the outside. Martin Luther King also made very clear that the people who were being mistreated should not be angry with the people who were mean to them, but should set a good example by being calm and talking about the problems they faced, and loving everyone, even if they didn’t seem to deserve it.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent most of his life preaching and protesting for the end of segregation. He had a dream that one day people would realize that even though we all look different on the outside, we should only be judged by who we are on the inside. Dr. King’s dream did eventually come true for most Americans, even though he did not live to see it. The Sneetches, written by Theodore Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) tells the story of a community that is segregated by the presence of a star on some bellies, and no star on others. A man comes and tricks them, teaching them the lesson about equality. Use the QR code below to watch the story of The Sneetches and think about how it helps teach the lesson that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted us all to learn.

What does the word segregation mean?

When compared to 1950’s America, who do you think the star-bellied Sneetches represent? What about the Sneetches with “no stars upon thars”? What lesson does Sylvester McMonkey McBean teach the Sneetches? Bonus: How does this lesson compare to the lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King?
