MERCANTILE MUTUAL RIVERINA FOOTBALL LEAGUE
President's Welcome Welcome to the annual Australian Fodtball
State Championship match between the current champions, the Riverina Football League and the challengers, the Sydney AFL.
I would like to congratulate all the players · - who have made the commitment to make
themselves available and have been selected to represent the RFL today. All the players in the squad are to be commended on their spirit, enthusiasm and dedication in attending the various training sessions and the Challenge match against the Farrer League. I hope you now reap the rewards you deserve by successfully defending the State title today.
A special thanks to coaches Wayne Carroll (seniors) and Russell Durnan (under 18s) and the support staff of selectors, managers,
trainers and runners who volunteer their services and without their input the games would not happen.
Thank you also to Garry Buchanan and his staff at the Southern Regional Office (AFL [NSW/ACT]) and Wayne Gardner (MVAFA Association Secretary) for their assistance in organising this important event.
Thanks also to the ACT Under 18 representative team for taking up the challenge to play in the curtain-raiser against our talented MVAFA Under 18 team.
Finally, I would like to wish all four teams the very best of luck in today's games. I hope we witness some great, skilful and injury-free football. GO RIVERINA!
GREG CARROLL President, RFL

Message from John Livy Welcome to today's Vili's 2000 State
Championships game between Sydney and the Riverina.
This is a very important game in the leadup to the Wesfarmers Dalgety Australian Country Football Championships which will be played in Wagga Wagga from June 30-July 2.
A number of players from the game today will be selected to represent NSW in the Championships.
The AFL (NSW/ACT) are very .proud to be hosting the Wesfarmers Dalgety Australian Country Football Championships and it is a wonderful achievement that Wagg a Wagg a has been chosen as the location to host the carnival this year. Today's game is a key part of that process.
The AFL community in Wagga Wagga has worked very hard in the lead up to the game today, and the carnival at the end of the month, and the AFL are very proud of their efforts.
Over the past 12 months there have been a number of significant additions to the region in both junior development and the elite athlete program, and this investment will continue with the Elite Development program led by Garry Buchanan and Darren Harris.
Again this year we see outstanding contributions from all non-playing personnel involved in the game today and my thanks goes to all those whose leadership and hard work has contributed to the success of today's game.
To the players and coaches I extend my congratulations to you on your dedication and commitment to training over the past month in the build up to this game and wish both teams all the best.
I know we will witness a first class football game here today.

·Farrer League
Judging by the results each week in the Mercantile Mutual Farrer League, the local competition would seem to rival the Olympics with the amount of interest it creates • to say it is unpredictable is an understatement.
Weather conditions for Round Nine were marginally better than the previous week, the footy was fierce, the results were as usual unpredictable and the hardy footy fans certainly had no grounds to claim a refund. The RockYerong Creek were shooting for seven straight wins when they paid the visit to McPherson Oval to tackle the North Wagga RMF Saints in the Match of the round and what an absolute thriller it proved to be. The sides went at it from the first bounce and in a defensive., low-scoring game - little separated the teams for the entire match. The Saints enjoyed a 20 point margin at half-time and maintained that cushion at the start of the last quarter. The Magpies lifted in the final stanza and looked to have the momentum to snatch a win but. the gallant ' Saints we.re not about to surrender and held on to win a thriller by 2 points. Another match with significant influence on the make-up of the five was the clash at the Ariah Park Sportsground where the Brown Bombers clashed with the other Bombers from Marrar. Many expected the Ariah Park-Mirrool side to bounce back after their first defeat of the season and defeat the Marrar boys who have been a tad inconsistent in recent matches. Again this was another low-scoring game but the visiting Marrar Bombers had all the right answers and came away in the final stages to score an emphatic victory by 18 points which has given them some breathing space in fourth position. The Collingullie/Ashmont/Kapooka Demons displayed their best form for a number of weeks in disposing of the Ardlethan Stars at Norton Oval Kapooka. After a slow start the Demons poured on the power and finally won by a comfortable 45 points. The loss relegates the Stars to last spot on the pecking order and puts them under more pressure in the coming weeks. The final match of the round saw the Cootamundra Blues return to form and record one of their best wins away from home when they made a successful trek to CSU Oval and defeated the Rivcoll Bushpigs by an emphatic 39 points. The Blues led all game and with a
Editorial Round Ten
little more fire power up forward were able to withstand any challenges the Bushpigs could mount. The win was important for the Blues as it lifts them off the bottom rung on the ladder and gives them legitimate claims of a spot in the top five if they can maintain their form.
Round Ten will once again be chock full of interest and perhaps the most important games will be staged at the Ariah Park Sportsground and Clarke Oval Cootamundra. The Brown Bombers will be desperate to turn their form around and have another home game as they take on the Saints from North Wagga RAAF. Both sides have shown they are definite finals contenders and boast plenty of stars who can turn the game in their favour. It boils down to which team produces the effort for four quarters and despite the Saints recording perhaps their best effort of the season last week it would be a game person to back against Ariah Park Mirrool on their home ground. The Oootamundra Blues are at home for the allimportant clash with the Collingullie/Ashmont/ Kapooka Demons. Both sides are in winning from and will be keen to continue the momentum as the competition for spots in the five hots up. The teams look evenly matched and a top tussle is anticipated - maybe the Blues at home can pinch the points. The Marrar Bombers will welcome the Ardlethan Stars to Langtry Oval and will be striving to. produce some consistency and perhaps string a few wins together. The Stars have struggled in recent weeks and are under considerable pressure to turn things around and quickly or their season is virtually over. The Bombers will be favoured at home but with at least one "upset" each week in the competition anything is possible. The Stars will be desperate and the Bombers cannot afford to take the game for granted.

~erseverance over the past few weeks was rewarded with a timely win for the First 20at Bushpig Park last Saturday. It was great to see all 20 players contribute in what was only the second win away from home in 3 seasons.
Jamie "Jumbo" Ross can take the credit for having his charges motivated on the day. Good performances from Brent "Strop" Milthorpe and Roy and Danny Jaques were the catalyst for award winners Simon Roberts, Jason Anderson and Rod Craig to show their flair. The younger guys, Jim-Bob Callan, Andy Craig and Matt Rudd(in his first senior game for the club) also did their job well.
Unfortunately the Ressies could not emulate the "Ones" and lost by a large margin. To their credit, they kept the "Pigs" busy for the last 3 quarters and registered their scoring accordingly. Award winners were David "Harry" Harris, Ash Roberts and Sunny Roberts (who played a great game despite being unavailable for a few weeks due to work commitments.
The Bluebirds also lost one and won one with a couple of the ladies doubling up due to the unavailability of several players. A huge "thank you" to those who played two games in cold and miserable conditions.
1 The Des Guthrie Menswear Raffle is due for completion shortly. A $500.00 Clothing voucher is the terrific prize. If you don't have a ticket already, please see any of the Senior players or a committee member. The Member's raffle is drawn at the Olympic Hotel at around 7.30 tonight, so get down there for your opportunity to win!
On_ that winning note, let's finish up by welcoming "The Gullies" to our home turf - Clarke Oval. Let's use the 'home ground advantage' to the max and get all teams home this week!

Murrumbidgee Valley Australian Football Assoc. Inc. G "FOOTY RECORD" - 2000
Last week we had about as much success as an Indian Restuarant in Suva and returned from our trip over the river empty handed. Without detracting from the opposition we played pretty poorly for 3 quarters and you can't expect to_win big games if you give start. But we headed them in the dying minutes only to lose it at the end. I know that a valuable lesson was learnt. Awards were: The Rock Butchery Mug - Mark O'Leary for another top effort. The Porky & Verda Mug - Barney Fellows who put in all day. The Rivspray Ag'N'Vet socks - Mick Mazzocchi who excelled in his first grade return from exile. The Home Dinner 42 -Shane Brown who is proving his versatility. The Magoos were out of balance right from the start and were pushing it up hill all the way. It is hoped that they learnt that games are won on the field all the time and not in the change rooms. I hope that Wade Newell's injury is not serious. Awards: The TyreWorld Mug - Daniel McGrath who never gave in. The Rivspray socks - Andrew Chaplin for his usual 100% effort. The Ladies $10 to Lance Warr and Simon Schlitz.
Netball News: A Grade didn't play and B Grade went down 43 - 29. Mug to Jodie Turner and Pizza Hut award to Aleasha Ball. Thanks to Woodsy for his mug donation to save wrecking the new ones. Maybe the footballers should do this too. Tonight we will be supplying delicious caseroles at the Pub for the wild west night. Helpers each week are getting a bit slack so remember to help when you can.
The social scene is starting to hot up in a big way. Tonight the players are having a Wild West night at The Pub with the theme being a mad hat night. The Bucking Bull will be there so all you cowboys get along.
The annual Goods & Services Auction will be on 24th June at The Rock Bowling Club. There are some genuine bargains on offer ranging from trips and airfares, the odd motor car and a vast range of items and manual offerings. The full list will be publicly displayed next week so keep a look out for it.
Plans for the Team of the Century night are in full swing. It is being advertised extensively and will be a great night. Admittance by ticket only and dress is coat and tie. Tickets from Grainco at The Rock, Bob and Sandman. More on this later.
Calcutta votes at present are: Others 18, Grunter 17, Leroy and Craigy 16, Woodsy 12, Matty Carroll 10, Thommo, Gundy and Boxhead 8, Barney 7, Cow 6. Those who still owe please pay Sandman asap.
Today we welcome the pigs and sows to our hallowed turf. We hope that they enjoy the visit, our hospitality but not our reception on the field. Don't forget after the game up to the pub for the wild west night.
Thought for the week: The winds people fear most are those that blow open their coats.
UP THE HOT PIES.

Much warmer last week, compared to the week before, with the mercury topping a balmy 8 degrees at the Ariah Park weather bureau. Our netball girls warmed to the task at hand and had a rather successful day. Our ever improving A Graders won well with Renee Quade winning the $1 O and Amanda Wheeler winning the Mug. From all reports the girls are playing much better now they have gotten used to Amanda's bullet passes which were clocked at 217 km/h on Dave's radar. The B Graders won their 2nd game for the year which coincides with the Seniors 2nd loss for the year, apparently they've agreed to do a Salim Malik and "throw" the rest of their games to stop the trend. Bee Baker won the $19 and Crystal Stanley the Mug. The C Graders went down narrowly, Natasha Sherwood won the $10 and Catrina O'Brien the Mug. BJ Edis was given the club stubbie holder which she is not sure whether she won or whether she was just holding it for someone else. If your think you should have won it phone her on her mobile.
Onto the footy - the Seconds bounced back to the winners list without really finding top gear. The shortest shearer in the southern hemisphere, Brian "I'm retiring next week" Gaynor had a day out, winning the Bowling Club Award and the Players Player Mug for a fine display. Cameron Furphy appears to have put Sav's sacking behind him and won the stubbie holder and $10. Club medico Jerard Judd won the Bill Thompson award, while "Bear" Prentice will have to make a special trip to the Mirrool Hotel to pick up his 6 pack. The Hair cut went to Geoff Walker courtesy of Dom's Style Cuts and Eye-Brow plucking Salon. "Possum" Doyle led the scoring with a lazy 4 goals. Chris Cassidy led the inaccuracy with 5 behinds.
Hard to find many positives in the First Grade. As the score suggests both backlines were on top with Marrar a little more productive when going forward. They wanted it more and deservedly won the footy game. Our backline as a whole was terrific, with a Al Edis the standout winning the Bowling Club award. Mr Consistent Ben Prentice won the stubbie holder and $10, with Mick Heath winning the only other award given. Gavin Leiper took a 'hanger' which Mick O'Brien proclaimed could become a Cadbury contender. Warrigal pointed out what the umpires were doing wrong and President Russell was faultless in the goal square.
Back-to-back home games brings North Wagga to our turf, with a win essential to get things back on track. Enjoy your long weekend, go you Brown Bombers.

Another good weekend last week with 3 wins from as many starts and a Mystery Bus tour which was very successful.
The Two's started off with a good win over a team place above them on the ladder. Jason Flagg won the Players Player K&J Mug with a big effort and arguably his best game at the club. Newcomer Darren Mudge is getting better with every game and earnt himself some Palm & Pawn beer tickets. Graham McDonald put in a good game after a week off to win the Palm Bistro award while Daniel Smith and Michael Hoogevelt took out the Earsman Drycleaning and BlackSwan special awards respectively. Keep up the good work and maybe a top three finish is not out of the question.
The Firsts got their second close win in a row after a few anxious moments with a pretty good team effort. Steven "Rowdy" Withers did every job asked of him to earn best on ground honours and the Players Player K&J Mug. Matty Cowper continued his great season thus far to win the Palm Beer tickets while Russell Randall picked up the Palm Bistro award and another one of our youngsters Chris "Junior" Pedler picked up the SWIFT Petrol award.
The netballers only had to play one game (8 Grade) but a win nonetheless with Sally Noack winning the Players Player K&J Trophies Mug and Alicen Knight the Palm & Pawn Beer tickets. The girls now sit on top of the comp, so hopefully they can keep up the good work and the reward will come.
This week sees us on the road to Ariah Park to take on the Brown Bombers and Bomberettes. Let's make it back to the Palm & Pawn with a few wins under the belts.

Last week saw the Bomber boys and girls take the trip to Ariah Park and return home with a mixed bag.
The Seconds started well enough but then stopped against a more determined side. Dan Burkinshaw swapped his usual flair for fight and busted his proverbial all day to win the Mug. His only disappointment was choosing a Sunday to claim free drinks and will be more the wiser next time, while Craig "Buckets" Windsor used a bit of experience and claimed McGoo's Middies knowing that he can stockpile them until this week.
· Clint Taylor won the Socks after running the bottom out of his last pair and Ben Langtry took home the cold hard cash. The boys know that footy is a four quarter game and will be fired up to make amends next time.
First Grade continues to show they will be a real force to be reckoned with after doing it the hard way to score a very satisfying victory. Rick Pritchett claimed the mug {again) with another barnstorming performance. Robbo won the D42 and the cash and could be looking for a netballer to wine and dine or an investment banker to handle his growing funds. The rest of the cash was shared out between Juicy Kew, Darren O'Donnell and Brendan Harrington. To cap off a top team performance Ben Brown won the socks on a day where there could have been twenty award winners.
The netball results were also a mixed bag. A Grade went down with Belinda Pattison winning the mug for her classy efforts, while 8 Grade suffered a similar fate with Kelly Harrington the star there. C Grade, spurred on by Fianna on the side line, saved the day for the girls to record a comfortable victory.
Players and supporters are reminded that tonight is our annual Bonfire night with all welcome. It should be a top night with cricket informing me that he will be bringing extra clothes

due to the cold weather. So rug up and turn out for a huge night where we can hopefully celebrate another good day on the paddock.
Today we welcome Ardlethan to Langtry Oval, the ledger is still not square so let's rectify that with some good wins.

Miserable weather again last week and miserable results on the paddock at Kapooka last weekend. We just can't seem to string together a couple of good games in a row.
The Mighty Magoos started short of numbers and things just got worse as the game went on - chin up guys. Votegetters in the Bowling Club Award were (5) Aaron Daly, (4) Gyles Millinton, (3) Kieran Bundy, (2) Chris Lee and(1) Duncan Campbell. The Towel Award went to Peter Wykes, the London Hotel award to Bruce Patten and the Farmers Home Hotel award to Giles Millinton. This week the Commins Hendriks Encouragement Award went to Duncan Campbell.
The Seniors started well, but just couldn't maintain the required tempo to keep the game theirs. Votegetters in the Horan Transport Award were (5) David Cox, (4) Nat Herde, (3) Matthew Currie, (2) John Carroll and(1) David Carroll. The Towel Award went to Mark Neyland, the London Hotel award to Mark Neyland and the Farmers Home Hotel award to David Cox.
In netball news, the girls had a very enjoyable weekend off in Melbourne last week and are just chomping at the bit to get back into the action on the court. Go go go girls!!
This week it's another away game, where we travel to Marrar, let's push for a four quarter effort and bring home a victory.
UP THE STARS AND STARETTES!!
