How are we to love God? With everything thatwe are and who we are.
Our love of God is not meant to be static orstagnant. It is to be all consuming, and wemust constantly be searching and growing --growing in our emotional relationship with God,and willing to relate to God with all our emo-tions. We need to be growing in our spiritualrelationship with God and making faith an im-portant part of every day, even when ourfeelings lag. To grow in our intellectual re-lationship with God, we must be willing towrestle with the hard questions and issues oflife that demand serious thought and prayer.Don't just believe or only love a bit, but lovewith all your heart, soul and mind. The"trinity" of love will help you grow ever clos-er to the Divine Trinity above.+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

DIOCESE OF VICTORIAOffice of the Bishop
October 30,2018
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
The U.S. bishops are joining together in a commitment of prayer and reparation leadingup to the bishops' general assembly, where we will be making critical decisions in response tothe clergy sexual abuse crisis. With my brother bishops across the nation, Iam dedicating mysel fto seven days of intensified prayer and fasting, from Monday, November 5, through Sunday,November 11. The intentions for this period of prayer and sacrifice are three-fold:
• For the healing and support of all victims of clergy sexual abuse.• For the conversion and just punishment of the perpetrators and concealers of sexual
abuse.• For the strength of the bishops to be holy shepherds in protecting and leading our sheep
from all harm.
If you feel called to do so, you are welcome to join me in praying for these intentions.Especially powerful is the participation in daily Mass and the prayer of the Rosary. Ideeplyappreciate your faithful prayer and witness for our Church, and will be grateful for any prayersfor me and my brother bishops during our general assembly - that we may follow the guidanceof the Holy Spirit in responding to the tragedy of clergy sexual abuse in the Church.
May God bless you and your families, entrusting our hearts to our Mother Mary Jet'skeep each other in prayer!

Needed: Men of Heroic Virtue
An Irish priest in America once told the story of how he was recruitedfrom his native land. A bishop from Western Europe came to his
seminary, which trained men for the missions, and painted a pictureof comfortable rectories in a beautiful, peaceful country dotted withgrand basilicas. Another bishop, from the American South, promisedsomething different: remote, rural parishes, barely adequate rectories, few Catholics, and an oppressively hot climate. The Irish priest said thathe and nearly every other classmate chose the latter.
Real men rise to challenges. And the Church needs brave men toanswer the call to the priesthood. Being a priest should never be avocation of last resort for men who could not marry or «make it" in theworld. It is a vocation for strong men who love Jesus, who are strivingfor virtue and purity, and who are willing to lay down their lives for His
Bride, the Church.Thankfully, despite the very grave failingsof too many clergy, the Church in Americahas some 40,000 priests, the vast majority ofwhom serve their people faithfully. DuringVocation Awareness Week, let's prayfor our faithful priests-and encouragepromising young men in our parishes to
seriously consider the priesthood.
Prayer Practices of Future Priests
Figuring out one's vocation is rarely easy. The most essentialelement of discernment is forming a loving relationship with
God through prayer. Thus it's no surprise that a 2017 CARA sur-vey of recently ordained priests revealed a rich and diverse prayerlife before they entered seminary, as the chart below shows.
This prayer life intensifies when men enter the seminary. Theyattend daily Mass and pray together the Liturgy of the Hours, and many seminaries now have community Holy Hours as well. All seminarians have a spiritual director who "coaches" them intheir prayer life and spiritual formation.
