Message fromThe President
Dear Colleagues,
Greetings for the New Year 2015.
Our 10th International Congress of APHS in Jaipur, Rajastan, India, during 6–8 November 2014 was
a great success. Thanks to the host, the Hernia Society of India, for arranging the most memorable
scientific and social programmes. It was well attended by 500 participants from around the world.
On behalf of the APHS, I would like to give special thanks to Dr Anil Sharma, who faithfully served as
the editor of the APHS newsletter since its beginning. All these years, he also maintained the APHS
website, www.aphernia.org. These tasks will now be resumed by our energetic colleague Dr Manish
Baijal, as appointed by the APHS Executive Committee in our last meeting in Jaipur. Dr Baijal's
dedication to these responsibilities is very much appreciated. We will all give him full support and
cooperation.
This year, the APHS will join EHS and AHS, Australasian Hernia Society and Afro-Middle East
Hernia Society in organizing the 1st World Conference on Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgery, Milan,
Italy, 25–29 April 2015.
I would encourage our APHS members to participate in good numbers. The APHS is collaborating
with EHS and AHS and Australasian Hernia Society in developing and implementing “International
Guidelines for Treatment of Groin Hernia in Adult Patients”. The work is ongoing; the finished draft is
expected to be presented in the 1st World Conference on Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgery in Milan,
April 2015.
Hope to see your all in April, in Milan.
SATHIEN TUMTAVITIKUL, M.D. President, Asia Pacific Hernia Society

The 10th International Congress of the Asia Pacific Hernia Society (APHS 2014) at Jaipur, India from
6 to 8 November 2014 was a huge success and attended by around 500 participants from across the
world. The state-of-the-art lectures, symposia, live surgeries, industry exhibits and social
functions—all generated tremendous response from delegates and guests. The next APHS Congress
will be organized in Milan, Italy on 25–29 April 2015 in conjunction with the 1st World Conference
on Abdominal Wall Hernia Surgery. We are grateful to the President and Secretary General for their leadership and guidance, which has
strengthened the foundation of the APHS. We are proud that the Hernia Journal is now the official
journal of the APHS. We are also grateful to the leaders of the national hernia societies for upholding
the spirit and carrying forward the mission of the APHS in their individual countries. We currently
have 11 national chapters in place.
Herniology has emerged as a superspecialty in itself and the APHS acknowledges the role of the

One of the objectives of the Singapore Hernia Society is to further the learning of art and science of hernia surgery for
surgical trainees and practising surgeons. Towards achieving this goal, the first dedicated hernia workshop was
organized at the Advanced Surgical Training Centre (ASTC) at the National University Hospital (NUH) in 2003. Since
then, we have conducted yearly courses in abdominal wall surgery—laparoscopic and open approaches, involving
world-experienced hernia specialists and attracting participants, both local and from overseas.

For the year 2014, the Philippine Chapter of the APHS, the Philippine Hernia Society, conducted several laparoscopic
hernia workshops in conjunction with the Philippine Association of Laparoscopic and Endoscopic Surgeons. One
workshop was held in Manila at the Philippine Center for Advanced Surgery and another workshop was held in Davao
located in the southern part of the Philippines. The Davao workshop was unique since the participants after attending
the lectures were able to individually operate on a hernia patient with guidance from a faculty who was scrubbed in. We
have also endorsed several meetings and small group discussions and live demonstrations of different hernia techniques
and materials, which were done in several hospitals throughout the country. The year was capped with a session of the
APHS Philippine Chapter during the PCS Annual Convention in December 2014; this was graced by the attendance of no
less a person than our President, Professor Sathien Tumtavitikul.

The Hong Kong Hernia Society
The Hong Kong Hernia Society was established in April
2013. The formation of the society is to support the
research, development and training of hernia disease
management and promote public awareness of this
disease. In 2013, the Society successfully organized the
9th Asia Pacific Hernia Society International Congress
in Hong Kong. It was a great success with over 350
participants from around the world.
In 2014, we provided support to our members for
overseas hernia surgery training, as part of our society's
goal. Thanks to Professor Bittner and his team in
Germany, who accepted our surgeon for TAPP training. She has gained hugely in skill training and approach for various
types of groin hernia repair. She is now back in Hong Kong and is starting to pass on her skills to her fellow surgeons. It is
a very successful exercise which we will continue to support in the future.
In September 2014, we held a Luncheon Symposium with support from Covidien at Mira Hotel. Mr Christophe
Erembert was the invited speaker from the mesh and development branch of Covidien in France. It was a very valuable
lecture which told us a lot about mesh engineering and design, which all hernia surgeons should know in order to provide
proper care and choice for their patients.
In November 2014, we had our Annual Clinical Meeting and Gala Dinner. Currently, we have a total of 213 members, i.e.
128 ordinary members and 85 associate members. Our web site is www.hernia.com.hk
APHS Website (www.aphernia.org) WWW
The APHS website was initially conceptualized and created by Dr Davide Lomanto at Singapore. From 2005 to 2014, Dr Anil
Sharma looked after the website. In 2014, this task has been entrusted to Dr Manish Baijal and the website is being designed
and maintained from New Delhi, India.
The website features comprehensive lists of general members, executive members and office bearers of the APHS. Information
on the Hernia Journal, and links with related organizations are provided. The Video gallery features crisp edited short videos
on groin and ventral incisional hernia repair performed by international experts. A corporate corner is created where it is
envisaged that hernia-related products would be displayed by various medical corporates.
I would request all the Presidents and Secretary Generals of the
respective national chapters who have not sent their recent
photographs, and the photographs of their country-related
events, to kindly send them so that we may update the website and
the next issue of the newsletter.
