broken foot who still senl wayward Pl·dcstrians scurrying and fleeing in terror as I accompanied him to o colTee bar for a melon and a banana milk shake.

And the young girl appeared at the table and "Fried waitress and chips," said Arthur in reply to h('r question of " Whal would you like to eat, sir?".

,-\nd the young airl ran away, From his image? Jn ract Arthur i~ not nn evil person. "Jt•s quite amnz.lng

how an Image bui lds up;· continued Arthur. " For example, when J made my Rrst appearance at UFO I descended on to the stage with helmet aflame and blazing by being towered down from a balcony on a wire sort of pulley arrangement. It was quite dark, and I suppose a lot or pco1>le were a bit stoned or a bit high - and as J floated down onto st.nee 1here were scre;ams and yells or ·He's flying, he's Ryini•. And after the act people started to follow me around and i ay, with a glazed look in their eyes, ·He's Cod, he's God'.

"Orig inally I started off ns a blues singer - but it became a drag. I li ke blues, but there were so many blues groups around that it ~tarted to bee-Orne a bit boring, Jt was when I came bac k rrom a Continental tour about eighteen months ago that we started to de\1elop our present ac t. We didn 't. have very much money, and we had to get our props together as cheaply as possible. M y Are helmet was an old col1ondor with a couple or candles stuck on top of it - it looked quite effective worn upside down on my head, hut all tho candle-wax used to run down my race throuJth nll the lh llc holes.

" But we persevered , and started t o attract a bil of a tte n• tlon - at on<' point there wen~ three different peop le who "''anted to siKn us up for management and record ing . But we s igned m the e nd wl1h Kit Lamhert and Chri~ Stamp -they d idn't scc,m to want to tic, us down too much, or alter us ot all Th<!y " 'Crr(! prepared to accept us as we were,

root I think l 'll exchange my knees ror rubber ones -they're more flexible.

"But apart rrom that. the American tou r was q_uite good - but the audiences there arc very different to here. es1>ec ially ror what we're doing. They S-Ocm to be more afraid of evil thon we are - they're conditioned to be afraid of violence. So in a lot of place~ we played we wcren 't accepted as a stage act - a lot or people were blaS-Od against us from the s tarl because they didn't want to know. They we re genuinely frightened - whereas in London especially, the aud iences arc very cool on the whole. They'll sit down and be frightened by the- act - but they don't have the sorl of overall fear beforehand that makes them afraid to watch.

"And that's why wt had these incidents where ~ople ran out of the theatre thinking I was the devil. They were frightened by the stage net, but they were ulso frightened by the idett of the dC\'il - and they dJdn·t wnnl any part of it.

" B'ut the point is that we are trying to frighten peoplr . in that we' re appealing to that emotion, For a long time 1>eople have been singing about IOvC' and nice th in g~ - and It was getting boring . F'ear and horror Is j ust another emotion that hillln't really been tapped In pop music, We're just trying to approach music from a different viewpoint f or a change - at the moment the basis of our uct i~ the horro r c'lement, But it's conccl\•&ble that we'll change and try to put something else across - perhaps comedy. Who knows?

" As a group we're pcrtrn1l .s theatrical ti s opp-0,;ed to straight pop. What I like to think is that we fa11 in between the two - I <Jon't feel that there's uny ruture now in j ust straight pop music, and what we're doing now is probably the next s te p In por>. I think it's Just • logical development, because i r po~, carries on as it b; at the momen t, it'll d ie -ifs already aetting a bit stale.

"Bu t indircttly t hat's one of Lhe reasons why I'm hobbling around w ith a broken foot a nd a gammy knee. In fact I think l 'JI h :J\' C to have a knee transplant. DEREK IIOLTWOOD AR THUR BROWN-by Lon Goddard.

IT MUST BE THE ONLY TRUMPET LEAD GROUP AROUND. ' •• I DON'T J.OVE W ILL the Alau Bown have a hit "t

Jast'! T1,e y cer tainly deserve to ha \'t one wHh thei r debut for Muslr F~etory entitled " We Can Help You".

" The prese nt group ha1l been toget her for two years nnd we arc popu lar not only throughout Brirnln but also on the Con• tincnt," smd Alan. " We go down welt In F'ranCL\ Ho lland and Sweden In particular. Howe\'er. ln spite or our popularity. we've never had a hit ulthough 'Toyland " nearly made it."

Ma1ty people in lhe buslnes~ have marked down ··we Can Help You" as a potential chart success. Alan Bown himself is equally e nlhused und remarks: "Thi$ is the flrsr time l'\.' l• had a 1V on one of my records, so H Jooks as thouJth things are happening at last."

The group have worked fanatically hard over th~ last rew years to a<'hl eve their very exciting and original stage act. Alan Bown attributes the succrs.s to the fact that . . . •·1 always wanted my own thing going and I know my scene will pay off in the end. Thert is nothing beyond the group reg~rding mu sical expression. Most or the numbers in our act we write ourselves. Jeff Bannister (our organist) and I write melodic numbers and Jes-• lloden (the vocalist ) with Tony Catchpole (lead guitarist) write numbers in a toUJlly diffcrenl vein. So you see we are able to put on a \'Cry diversified act, The o ther members or the group are John Anthony on tenor sax and re-corder. Stan Haldane on bass. and drummer Vic Sweeney."

It is unusual for the leader of a group In this country to play the trumpet but this i s Alan·s instrument - in fact the Alar. Bown must be tho only trun'lpct led group around! (Except, ir you want to argue - Herb Alpert.) Because of their instrumentation the group are able l o ach lO\'C whatC\ltr

sound they want and this Is another con, tributory factor to their success.

At the reception given in t he Pair or Shoes club in honour or The Alan Bown, to celebrate the release of their now reconl. everybody was mo1't Impressed with the disc. If it Is a hit. then Mike Hurst must take a great deal of the credit. As Tony Catch• pole told me: " \Ve are very pleased with Mike's arr•ngement or 'We Can Help You·. Actually the «roup did not care for the song at Hrst and we wanted to do a number from our rorthcoming album instead, However, Miko persisted in his ideas and did an ex• C'<'llent Job. II the record is a hit a lot or the <·redlt should go to him,"

At last the A lan Down seem to huve every. thing going for them promotion-wise on t heir record, so It Is up 10 the public to put them where they should be •• , in the charts.

B&FORE I try to assemble a tew handy phrase,; to de..,dbe The Bealle.' ' 'Yellow Submarine" I'd like to dedare an lntereot (as Pollllclans say when they dluuss a sub]eet In lbe Bouse of Commons- In whlth tbe,y have some speC'Jal. involvement) .

A pnsslonale lntere•t. Three year$ a;o, alter •~Ins l hcmovle " Help!'', I started wondering what the NEXT Beatie film would br like. "flelp!" was a bit thin p lot• wise and I suggested to J ames Craig tha t he might like to ask RA! readers lor their ideas. J ames went along with this and the result wu a fair-sized avalanche or readers• le tters. Space storlet, wll.h the ~loon p rominently featured, were extremely popuJar. So were duer t island sltu.atlons. But though there were many lantasUe synopses (printed In 1he RM over two Issues) nothing stood ou1 as a 8Ure-flre- winner.

• FOOD FOR THOUGHT These letters provided much lood for lhouab t and I

brooded over them for about a year during whlt h there was no news of any Spetlftc Beattts' ftlm plan._ So I devbed my own, quite lenJthy, elfort. It was tilled _.Troubaman.la" and concerned the adventures of fOIII' you.ng minstrels who team up and wander across medieval .Europe coping with drsgons, wicked barons and lhe like. ''Troubamanla" was sent to Tony Barrow, The BeaUes' publicist, for his opinion. Tony sent II to Walter Shenson (producer or "Delp!") and In due course I beard from him to the effect that the Iheme chosen tor the neirl Bealle,• pie was to be a "swinging London" setting

Unfortu11ately, thal Idea never got oft lbe ground.

liHJan Without

"Swing ing London" SO-On became such a corny fad that It was bound to be old•hat by the lime The Bealle.• gol around to st11rt1ug work on Uie production.

Then came the crue for ••psychedelia" an.d one da,y, about a year ago, It. occurred t-o me that my forgotten "Troubamanla" Idea would make an excellent hippy-type lalry talc. T he Incident jhal reminded me was <he deAlh of Joe Orton, a wcll•known playwright who - sbo,tly before bis murder - had been Juncblng wltb Buller' -nager Brian Epstein to discuss a Dulles' Krlpt. So I wrote u, Brian, enclosing a copy of "Troubamanla''. Never beard a wonl - presumably b«ause a day or two laltt Brian blm11elf was dead. All very stran,re.

BRIEF APPEARANCE As It bu tllffltd out, The Bealle• have not yet made a -so• to "A Bani· Da>"• Nlst,t" ud •e elp!". 1-..i,

they coneeniraled on maldl\1 their own TV lbn, lb• ttllleally knocked "Maaical My,tvy Tour",

STROLLED lnlo tho pub with • 1wlfly eaay beat and bumped smack into Stove Wright who was sipping a hair and con• valescing from the morning's

recording work. I haven't seen you in forty closing time,,

I said. Haven't you and tho rest of the Easy• beats spent an abnormal amount of time tucked away recording?

"I began to get worried about our act and the \'eln of mat.erlal we were releasing in the year," said Steve. "Somethlne was defin, ltely wrons. but I could not pinpoint what. So. I decided we must duck away by our-selves and review every 11pect of tho Eaay, beats as a creative group. We went down into the studios and out of touch with the world. Thero, tho five of us analysed our relation&hlp1 with one another, our musical taste,. the group imaae. staae act. and status In the flow of pop music, After that, we were much closer as people than ever before. All previous Inhibitions were lifted and we played only what we wanted and like to play. Our toylna about with music and wrlllng brought about what we thlnk Is a collection of very eood numbers. Far different from our la1t releuc."

GOOD NUMBER I queried why Steve thought "Music Goes

Round My Head" failed to make It .. • "I thought It was a very good number.

The more I heard It. the more I sounded ftat, but on the whole I felt It was catchy, The trouble ls, when we go Into the studios we tend to lose all sense of commerclaUt,y. If it wasn't for our manager ·• good aensc. we might well be still baffled as to why an occasional disc doc.sn't sell. However, J belleve we've now reached solid ground thanks to • few le•son, learnt . "Hello, How Are You" didn't do too badly. But I sound ftat again. The re•t of the group keep set· ting the key for the song and then h annon , lzlng from oll ends of the scale, leaving my vocal about twelve miles out of my range. It was most exasperating and the horror of hearing flatness creep Into my voice haunted me. I dreamt about singing flat."

I had noticed Steve mentioned lessons learnt earlier on. so I pro.bed into that.

"Well. for Instance. we did a show at Wembley. The first set flopped and I couldn't figure why the audience hummed and hawed after we'd gone to such lengths as dropping "Friday On My Mind" out of

the act and doing our level best to change our Image. The format change still produced yawns In the stalls. So we tossed It about afterwarch trying to single out where we were losing them. On the next set, we piped up the act, opened with "Hello" and closed with "Friday", This wowed the whole crowd and did wonders for my ego."

" Now If we can Just get "Land 0 1 Make Believe" into the charts ·to substantiate. our pasition in the public's musical 1mind, we'll be back on that rood we nearly slipped off not long ago ...

I didn't think thoy·d slip~ oil the road - but they hod made themselves scarce for a periOd of lime. Little did I know that the flve had produced an excellent new LP whiles losing themselves In the s tudio for a while .. .

WIJ,I, C & W DIE BEFORE 'J'lfE END OF 'J'RE

YEAR? iJIIS'J' WRA'J' ISN''J' HAPPENING l

Al>'T year. November 2$th, to be exact. I wrote an a.rticlc in praise or Bluegra.as Music and its Top Twenty Potential. At that par ticular time "Foggy Mountain Break• down" by Flatt & Scrugg •. , was flrmly fixed In the Record Mirror

Top Fifty Charts, On the strength of this hit a number of English Bluegrass outfits re<-eived publicity and expo, ure over the air and several magazines gave space to features on this "new" sound. Consequently, everything should have happened for Country Music as a whole, but it didn't! The recording company responsible for the na11 & Scruggs disc didn't even have the good sen1e to release a follow-up, whi~h is surprising because Stateside. C.B.S. are vir· tualcy leaders In tho Country Music record Held - even I f It is commercially slanted.

DISBANDED To add fuel to this perplexing state of affairs.

on January 13th. this year, a Bluegrass group with .-·erythlng before them. Anita & The Bluegrass Boy•, decided to disband. With an album already cut and a "hot"' single av.•aiting a February release. plus the promise of T.V • dates, they rnystcrlously quit the scene. Such even ts as these, however small they may appear to the average record fan, could sound the death knell of Country Music In the U .K.!

SICK Of BLUEGRASS Some months ago 1 decided to find out the

reasons behind the strange "retirement" o f Anita & The Bluegrass Boys - 1 came up with this unswer rrom ·the group's banjo player -"\Vc'd hod enough. I'm sic~ of Bluegrass. I' m

sick of walling for something to happen. know• Ing 1l never will," Odd remarks from a group who spent nearly a month in a rtt-0rding studio perfecllng the right sound tor thelr Initial single release and who last date was a guest spot on "Country Meets Folk" - to be followed by television dates!

APATHETIC This a1>athelic altitude seems prevalent

amongst those ronneetcd with English Country Music - if It doesn't happen overl'ight. pack It In. This goes tor the geniuses locked away i n the vaults of the recording companies as well - in their narrow little minds there is room only for thrc(! types or music - Pop, Classical and Jazz. What a dull, colourless wor ld they live In.

Of course. the nations country fans wut rise to their heckles In supp, ort or t.he ftnc music being played over Radio One by the Hlllsiders and The AJabama Hayriders - but where i.s the drive and originality of such groups? They ar:e µoor imitations of a style o f country music that went out with \\'orld \Var Two. They have all the ingredients o( country bands, steel guitars. Addles and vocal harmonies but the overall results Just aren't good cnoul(h. I& ll the fault of the artistes themselves or the people hand• ling them? I suspect in many cases that these groups would dearly love to record authentic counll")' material but they arc prevented from doing so by the usual nrmy or money hungry bunglers who proress to "know what they are doing," Yes. we know what you're doingyou're slowly but ~urcly destroying Country Mu$iC! So now we've got things together, and we·ri'l a lot happier with our stage act - we·,•c worked out what we'll be doing In the future too. For example, we've got some great Ideas for the Sunbury Blues Festival, which will be our Rrst appearance when we return to England - and we wouldn't have got I.hose Ideas without the A'merlcan tour. Before the tour ~·e were Just treading water In England - just a.l>Out keeping afloat. England is such a flogged scene -nothing :seems to Ii<! happening there.

''Being in America has helped me to see England •• It really Is- I can ,11 here, three thousand miles away, ond view the counlry objectively, It's easier for me to sec what's wronK with the British pop scene now I'm outside it- I reel more contident about finding rny own Ideas for impro,•ing lhlngs. Also, over here. the aud iencc Is much wider, and on the who le I think more critical as well - but 1 would say that Amerlc.on groups, even the underground groups, are about a year behind England.

FINAL APPEARANCE ''We're en.Joying ourselves Immensely al

Lhe moment, and all our d ates are going well - but we have the feellne U,at each gig we do Is only part of the build up to our final appearance here on this tour. That"II be a t the Shrine Auditorium with Albert King - we·re really looking forward 10 that, and I hope It'll be a &ood climax to tho tour. \Vc·rc fixing up another ske\e• ton tour al the moment for later In the year -but I d on't want lo work too hard In America. I'd Just like to come over here for carefully planned three-week lours every so often. I like working in Ena.land, a.nd I don'I wont us to wipe ourselves out there by spend ing too much lime In the States. Besides, rve got my dog Pudding t.o l.hlnk about -I can't keep traUlng him across to Americ.a."

Don't worry Jeff, Pudding is alive and well and living In Surrey,

15 BOBBY --~VEE THE U.S. CLIFF • • 1 N

~;X'I' year, Bobby Vee will celebrate his tenth anniversary In show busincu. Which gives him , link with CIIIT R<:lhard, a similar sort of most• matey character. who has beaten t.he American to the Decode or Pop by only a few months.

CIIIT, however, has consistently had hit records. Bobby, who used to top charts. has had a lean time. But let nobOdy In ony hearing tulk o! his being a hos-been. For Bobby has made a triumphant come.back In America, havin& sold twoand •a•half million records there In the past 15 months.

Time has not changed the pcrsonollty of Mr. Vee. He still looks the same, which means to say he looks boyish-he smiles a lot, Is relaxed, courteous and charm.packed. But his s tatus ha.s changed a great deal.

BO BBY VEE- ttn yurs in tht busintn.

He's 2S now. He's married, with three children. He·s keen on acting, tokes regular lessons from Agnes Moorhead and last year played the s ta rring role in the Paramount movie "C'mon Let's Live A Lillie ... He also now owns hls own publlshln11 company, named after his mother-S.lma Music.

Now Bobby Is in this country boosting his lal<lsl Liberty single, a double "A"-slder featuring "Take Good Core Of My Baby" and an amalgam of "M,y Girl" and "Hey Girl". He's doing television. Wt.'eks In top..class cabaret. has , •taited Germany and generally Is doing a II~ personal promotion job. For Bobby is now in the super-professional class. an nSllurcd young man who has learned to handle all k lnds of audiences,

But looking at him, it'5 alill amaiing to think lhat he's been nearly ten yea.rs In the buslneN. or course he started very young. It was 1959 when an unknown group rcalurin2 two young guitari.sts. Sidney and Bill VeUine, and lheir kid brother (who was allowed to sit in only as lone as he was quiet nnd well-behaved), were asked to fill in on a date in place u! Buddy Holly, who had been killed In • plane crash.

That group v.•a5 then known as the Shadows , . , which uc tually glv~s Bobby ar,othe r link with CIIIT Richard ! Any• \,ay, they ployed to 2,500 people that night and were u smash hil So smashing indeed lhat they attracted the 11ttenion of Arnlt Mill$, now manager of Bobby Vee and Vikki Car r-and he si ngled out young Bobby, shortened. hls name to Vee and hauled him st raight off to a recording $tudio which produced •·oc\1 il Or At1gcl". an instant hit which sold over three• quarters or a million in a re w weeks.

But Bobby sulfe red badly when the bea t boom came In. His SlYle, they ••Id, didn't ftl. His sales slwmped and he earned himself Instead more time to de\•otc to work ing on becomin~ a professional performer rather than a mere disc urtis te.

Then came the summer of last year when "Come Sack When You Grow Up" hit It big in the Stales and triggered ofl n run ol lour consecutive hit singles there.

It ls tim~. folks, for Bobby to moke a fast re turn to our own be5l·selle r lis ts. P.J.
