COLLEGE BASKETBALLMEN’S NOTES

ASSOCIATED PRESS

Mike Hopkins seemed des-tined to become a head coach. The surprise is that it’s not happening at Syracuse.

He was hired Sunday at Wash-ington, which moved swiftly after firing Lorenzo Romar four days earlier. Hopkins agreed to a six-year deal, with financial terms not announced.

Hopkins has been tabbed as the eventual replacement for Jim Boeheim at Syracuse since 2007. Two years ago, Syr-acuse put the transition plan in writing, announcing Hopkins would take over after the 2017-18 season. Hopkins also served as interim head coach during a stretch last season when Boeheim was suspended.

Hopkins is leaving behind all he’s known in college bas-ketball for an opportunity to rebuild Washington. He spent most of the past quarter-century with the Orange as a player and coach. He played at Syracuse from 1989 to ’93 and returned to the staff there in 1996.

“I can’t express enough thanks to Coach Boeheim for so many years of mentorship and guidance,” Hopkins said. “The timing is right for me and my family to make this move.”

Syracuse reacted quickly to the news, announcing Boeheim agreed to a new contract that will extend past next season. Boeheim just completed his 41st season as head coach at his alma mater, the longest active streak of seasons at one school in Division I.

ers flew a large Confederate flag from the top of a parking garage next to the Greenville, S.C., arena hosting two NCAA tournament games.

Protesters said they wanted to make their presence known to the NCAA. The governing body lifted its 14-year ban against South Carolina hold-ing championships in 2015.

NCAA executive Dan Gavitt said in a statement the organization would not per-mit symbols compromising a safe environment on venue property the tournament con-trols. Other areas are under the city’s jurisdiction .

Brodziansky each scored 19 points and TCU survived 94-92 in overtime against top-seeded and host Iowa to advance to the NIT quarterfinals. The Horned Frogs (21-15) led 84-82 when Tyler Cook finished a layup to tie it for Iowa (19-15).

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Top-seeded South Carolina again appeared to have a dominant regular season turn into a sur-prisingly early NCAA tourna-ment exit.

But that’s when two-time Southeastern Conference Player of the Year A’ja Wilson rescued her team.

Wilson scored 21 points and had 11 rebounds, includ-ing the put-back that gave South Carolina the lead for good and the free throws that sealed it, as South Car-olina (29-4) beat No. 8 seed Arizona State 71-68 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Sunday night.

Wilson didn’t touch the ball at all for two posses-sions as the Sun Devils (20-13) ended a run of 11 straight points to take a 68-67 lead with two minutes to go. But her teammates finally found her. She missed the first time down the floor, and again with 50 seconds to go. But Wilson fought for the rebound, tipped it to herself and made the

game-winning basket.“I thought the ball was

going to find who needed it at the time,” Wilson said.

Wilson rescued what would have been another disappointing NCAA tour-nament for one of the sport’s new powers. South Carolina has been a No. 1 seed four years in a row but made the Final Four just once.

Arizona State led by as

many as 11 and never trailed at all in the third quarter. But Kaela Davis scored six of her 20 points in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter as the Gamecocks built a 67-57 lead with five minutes to go.

Sophie Bruner, who led Arizona State with 20 points and nine rebounds, missed a heavily contested three-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied it.

SOUTH BEND, IND. – Purdue used a 10-0 run to force over-time and had Notre Dame on the ropes until Marina Mabrey banked in a jumper from the free-throw line with the shot clock running down that sparked the Irish to an 88-82 victory in the second round of the NCAA tourna-ment on Sunday night.

“That’s a prayer that got answered for us finally,” Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said. “We said a lot of prayers throughout that game. So we were sure happy that one went in.”

Mabrey said she was focused on not turning the ball over.

“I was just thinking, ‘We really need to score right now,’ ” she said.

The 10-0 run by the eighth-seeded Boilermakers (23-13) tied the score 78-78, and Pur-due had a chance to take the

lead in the closing seconds but couldn’t get a shot off. Lindsay Allen opened the overtime with a basket inside, and after Mabrey made a steal, she hit the bank shot that gave the Irish an 82-78 lead.

“When people hit banks that usually aren’t banks, you know that good things go for the other team most of the time,” Purdue coach Sharon Versyp said. “We were right there. We still had opportunities.”

Mabrey led Notre Dame (32-3) with 21 points and Arike Ogunbowale added 18.

The win was the Irish’s eighth straight over Purdue, although it was their first meeting in four seasons in what had been an annual game between the northern Indiana schools until 2012-13.

Ashley Morrisette, who led her team with 23 points and 10 assists, said the Boilermakers never thought they were out of the game.

“This team just has so much fight and so much heart,” she said. “We were never down, never out.”
