BA NEW DXINC MODE FOR THE 1990s By Karl D. Forth

So you're tired of mediumwave DXing? The NSPers and non-verifiers finally get you down? Well, Bunky, there's a new mode of DXing that more and more listeners are turning to.

And you already have a receiver that can bring in radio stations from all over the world at armchair level! It's not an Icom, Yaesu or Drake. It's your telephone!

It works like this: Any station that can be identified while you are put on hold can be counted. Since you already know where you are calling, you should have a pretty good idea of the station's location. Unless a frequency is announced, you'll have to do a little research. Keep an NRC Log, IRCA Almanac and FM Atlas handy for quick reference.

You call a company. They put you on hold. You hear schmaltzy music, then an identification: "This is Easy 99, KZXY, San Diego." Bingo! You've just gotten a brand new station, and you didn't have to get up at 4:00 a.m. to hear it.

What does this have to do with DXing? More than you might think. You're receiving the signal through a very long antenna (the telephone line). And while this kind of reception might not be as thrilling as trying to pull in that faint graveyard signal, when was the last time you heard an FM station from Oregon or a daytimer from Vermont?

Of course, successful telephone DXing takes a little planning. Watch the club bulletins for companies that carry radio station audio while callers are put on hold. (The club bulletins also have a "Muzak list" of companies to avoid calling. )

Naturally, you'll want to make a lot of calls a minute or two before the hour, ensuring that you will be on hold at the top of the hour for that all-important identification announcement.

Here are some key phrases: "I'd be happy to stay on hold;" "1'11 wait until Mr. Smithers is free;" "I'd rather hold than leave a message."

Knowing in advance that you'll be put on hold makes telephone DXing a little easier for the bashful beginner. Novices should try calling the Acme Construction Co. in Austin, Texas, at 512-571-0440. Ask for Mr. Jones. He's never there, but they'll spend a good ten minutes looking for him every time! They have KSSR-1520 "on hold." Need Vermont? Try Small's Beauty College in Montpelier at 802-453-8780 and ask for Nadine. She's been on vacation since I started in this hobby, but they'll spend enough time looking for her for you to identify WVSG-99.7.

After you gain some experience in telephone DXing, you'll come up with some tricks of your own. For example, Friday afternoon is a good time to call most companies and be put on hold because many people slip out of the office early and can't be found, leaving plenty of time for you to identify that rare station. Kind of like Monday morning used to be for mediumwave.

Can you verify reception of the stations you hear? Of course! Although some purists and old-timers might object to gathering reception report details over the telephone, there's nothing wrong with it at all. You heard the station, didn't you? Try to get at least an identification and a couple of commercials. A 15-minute listing of program details is a little unrealistic.

With this introduction, I hope some of you unfamiliar with telephone DXing will give it a try. And next Christmas, instead of a new receiver, I'm asking for the yellow pages for Philadelphia, Houston and Orange County.

Suggestion Time

Lou Poisson 768 Deepcandle St. Zev Falls, OH 43852

A prominant member has suggested that a DXer who doesn't verify stations is only half a DXer. Does this mean that people who don't send away for vxfications only have to pay $11.00, as opposed to $22.00, when they renew their membership? What about somebody who imagines everything they hear and doesn't write reception reports? Is he only one-tenth of a DXer? My own personal calculations show that I have verified roughly 30% of the stations that I have heard. This makes me 65% of a DXer. Accordingly, I'll be renewing next year for $14.30.

Perhaps next year's NRC Convention Quiz should be replaced by a Spelling Bee? I am appalled at the number of DXers who misspell "epiphenomenalism", "please" and "verification" in their reception reports! Not only can "Johnny not read", but he can't write either!

Since the Tower Tip Eeature has become the most popular column in DX NEWS why not expand its coverage? This is what I think could be provided in the future: (1) ,Directions to the station can be provided,. Why write for a verification when you can rudely demand one in person? (2) Provide directions to the home of the station's Chief Engineer, just in case the visit to the station Eails. (3) Provide information on nearby Pinball Arcades, Waterslides, Shopping Malls and Fireworks Stands! Make Tower Hunting a family outing!

7 3 AND GOOD DX. JERRY STARR 8 BUFFALO K. FOONMAN

It is with deep regret that I must announce the passing of Bill "Spanky" McFarland, on March 13. He was 26.

Bill was graduated from Kingsborough Community College where he was General Manager of WKRB, in 1982. His first professional radio work was in Eastern Connecticut in 1983 at WERI, WNLC, and WEAN. In 1984 Bill went to work for Mike Raub at CHR WLYQ in Norwalk, CT. It was at the Chicago Radiophiles convention that year that many of us met Bill. His next move was to Savannah, where he took the city by storm and 2102 to the to^.

I'n February 1987, 2-100 Program Director Scott Shannon called the tremendously popular air personality, asking to come home to New York. A fulltime job awaited that would soon include weekday overnights, morning sticker patrol during the zoo, Saturday afternoons and the highly-rated "Sunday Night Loveiines and Electric Dedications Party". Bill took on all of this work with enthusiasm, excited to be a part of the team that consistently draws top ratings in the nation's largest

t market. He tried his very best to work around the flu that plagued

h'm in February. But he was hospitalized with bronchitis and pleumonia that led to heart failure and his death yesterlay morninn.

~ 7 1 1 will be remembered for his vast aircheck collection stored in plastic convenience-store bags, his spontaneous evening trips to Boston or Baltimore to check out the radio scene there, coming back the same night to work the next day, and his friendliness towards ever one involved in the radio community, from the listeners, DXersrradiophiles, station interns and phone operators, through fellow air personalities, on up to

I top management. In that he was able accomplish his goal of making it big in New York City radio without developing the large ego characteristic of so many radio stars, makes us that

I much more proud to have known him. Bill, you will be missed. May you rest in peace.

I
