George M~acham arrived into this world about 4em on 16 March 1923·, in the indu~trieJ.carpet town of Kidder mister, Worchester, England.

George's father a guard on the Great .Western Railvay, \\las drafted to the city of Worcester .where

.George junior was educated until the age of. 12. · When his father was drafted pack to Kidder mister as yard for man, George junior finished his · education there. . ..

In 1937 he left school aged 14and vent to\¥'0rk . the RAF Maintenance Unit Hartlebury, as a

junior storeman. Outbreak of wir, September 1939, found George working for ''Short,Bro1t:iers" as a costing cler r, working on Stirling bombers.

George volunteered for the f AA in May 1 941, aged 18. He vas called up on January 1 942 . He did his basic trainirg at Malvern, HMS Duke and then was trained by the RAF at HMS Daedal u:, 83 ari Afr Mechanic Engines. At thattime the RN had no training faciHties. .

George vas then drafted to a training Squadron.on completion of his engine course and worked on Swordfi:,h arx1 Albacores at HMS Jackdaw. He then joined 816 Squadron optfr·ati ng Swordfish on 23 March 1943 aboard· HMS Dasher. He wa.s sent a~hore 'w'ith a teem to trei n new aircrew for deck landings at Macrihamish, Scotland:

a fev on shore leave and George's merry band at Macri hamish. The Squadron reformed and jai ned HMS Tracker . The ship sailed on convoy duties from Londonderry on Friday 1 :3th August 1943. At this ti me George did not lcnov that the Commarder f\ir onboard,was observer LCDR V.A.T. Smith RAN

HMS Tracker joined up1.w1th Captain Walkers sloe ps Wi ldgoose, Wren, Wood pee l<er, Starling, Magpie and ~ent LI-Boat hunting. W,hile try ing to turn, taking evasive action, HMS Triicker rolled and recorded 52 degrees. Damage to ship an·d aircraft resulted and repairs being carried out at Norfolk, Virginia USA. 816 Squadron eventuelly left HMS

George served on HMAS Sydney, HMAS Venge.ance and HMAS Melbourne. He abo served on 816, · 81 7 ,_ 808 and 725 Squadrons. George received his long distance gong from Captain VAT Sm1th on the 26th January 1960. He also did Vietnam trips on board HMAS Sydney vfth Wessex choppers ./·
