Materials in Automobiles : 19-04-2017Mr.S C Balawat, taking the example of a

truck, examined what are the major aggregates of an Automobile and what different parts constitute these aggregates are made of. Then, he classified the major parts into a family of parts- Sheet metal parts, Forgings, castings, bearings, springs and Fasteners. Then each of these category parts were discussed about what properties they should have, what are materials of each of them and how they are manufactured, with special emphasis on process like forgings, heat treatment including

carburizing and Induction hardening. Crank shaft forging, induction hardening and crown wheels quenching illustrated through a video clipping. The speaker also touched upon the increasing use of Aluminium , the advances in manufacturing to make the forgings to near net shape and use of extra high strength steels ,due to twin demands of Weight reduction and fuel efficiencyAfter the lecture programme there was an interaction Er.M.Chinna swamy, Chairman felicitation Er.S.C.Balawat & Er.K.B.Bhaskar proposed the vote of thanks.

Rtn. A.Ramesh, Retired Deputy Director, CFTRI, Mysore, a senior member of

ISHRAE, Mysore Chapter, Director-Engineering FOBICS and also a fellow member of Institution of Engineers India, delivered a technical lecture entitled " High Efficiency Chillers for Centralised air Conditioning Plants" at the Institution of Engineers on Wednesday the 26thApril 2017. Mr. Ramesh initiated his talk by explaining the need for chilling plants in the centralized air conditioning plants. It is a vital part of the all water cold distribution system in AC plants. He explained advantages of all water cold distribution systems to stress on importance of Chillers. He gave detailed information on classification of chillers, and the differences in the design of each category of chiller. He highlighted the difference in the design and performance levels of Scroll, Reciprocating, Screw and Centrifugal types of Compressors. He also explained the capacity limitations in each case. He stressed in great details the heat transfer processes involved in Chiller

plants. He explained the need to maintain a high value for the overall heat transfer coefficient by maintaining clean interiors for the tubes. He also explained the construction and advantages of Plate heat exchangers over the conventional Shell and Tube type of heat exchangers. He told the need and constructional features of different types of Water cooling towers used in large chilling plants. He highlighted, the advantages and of air cooling and evaporating water type cooling towers. He briefly touched the design features and advantages of VRF systems in the chillers. focused on the advantages and limitations of each type of chiller including absorption chillers. He briefly discussed the different standards like ASHRAE and ARI for chiller performance and the benefits of following and conforming the design parameters to these standards. The talk was followed by an interesting interaction session in which the audience got clarifications and additional information they needed. The function was presided over by Er. M. Chinnaswamy, Chairman, Institution

of Engineers (India) Mysore Local centre.Lecture programme was organized in association with ISHRAE Mysore Chapter. Sri .P.V.BharadwajPresident, ISHRAE, Mysore Chapter, Er.M.Chinnaswamy, Chairman felicitation Er.A.Ramesh ,Retd ,Dy Director ,CFTRI, Mysore and Sri.T.A.Prabhakar Secretary, ISHRAE, Mysore Chapter proposed the vote of thanks.

DORABJI TATA & RATANJI TATA. Jamsethji TATA founded TAJ MAHAL Hotel at Mumbai in his life time, to cater to the needs of Foreign specialists & guests as there was no Star Hotel at that time in India, this was his second dream done in his life time. His third dream of providing a center for higher learning & research resulted in establishing TATA RESEARCH INSTITUTE for Engineering and Science at Bengaluru in his life time. Now it is known as “Indian Institute of Science” which is rated very
