PREPARATIONIf your surface is wood, sand it and wipe it with a tack cloth. I did not seal these because I wanted washes on the background.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONSI usually dampen my surface with water and try to blend my colors wet into wet for the background. For the blue fi sh, I washed Indian Turquoise, Whispering Turquoise, Spa blue, and Calypso Blue (sparingly) over the background, softening the colors together as I went. I tried to keep Spa Blue up in the area around the mermaid. Spatter Snow White. Using your assort-ment of circle bottle tops, and the rings in various places. The way that I do a ring with more than one color is, I brush paint on half of the bottle top, and a diff erent color on the other half, then place it on your surface. Lift and repaint another area. I used snow White, Lemonade, Orange Twist for my main colors. You can add a few variations using Hauser Medium Green, Wild Orchid, any of your blues, etc. I fl oated Lemonade about half way around inside some of the circles. You can fl oat a highlight on top of the Lemon-ade using Snow White on a couple of them also.

MERMAIDBase coat her face, arms and body Warm Beige (Flesh Tone). Shade with a mix of Warm Beige plus a small amount of Deep Blush (Shading Flesh). Highlight her arms, back, and lower face with Natural Buff . Her eye-line is Traditional Burnt Umber. Her cheeks are a mix of Warm Beige plus Terra Coral. Her nose and smile are Terra Coral. Add a touch of Deep Burgundy inside her lower lip.

HAIRPuddle a few spots of water in various places over her hair area. Pick up Wild Orchid (thin) and move this around over her hair. Allow to dry. Sideload your brush in Terra Cotta and fl oat closer to her head. Add curls and linework using Traditional Burnt Umber. Add some blue tints to your linework. Spatter slightly with Snow White.

MERMAID SUITThese are colors that you will put in next to each other, and soften them together. Don’t’ overwork them. Use Olive Green, Calypso Blue, Lemonade, and Purple Rain. As you get to her tail area, just stay with Olive Green. Highlight the tail with Lemonade, and then Snow White. The linework is Lemonade. Add Lemonade line-work (half moon strokes) to her suit. Come back with a small brush sideloaded in a tint of color, and fl oat in the half moon strokes. Try to compliment the color under-neath. Indian Turquoise over Calypso Blue. Lemonade over Olive Green, etc. Float Lemonade on the scallop (next to her body) on the top of her suit. Add linework using Lamp Black.

FISHThe fi sh that she is holding has a face of Olive Green, highlighted Lemonade, and shaded slightly with Hauser Medium Green. The body is Purple Rain, shaded Dioxa-zine Purple. Highlight Wild Orchid. Wisp Calypso Blue, and then Whispering Turquoise for a tint. The lower fi n is Lemonade. The top lip is Boysenberry Pink. The lower lip is Tomato Red. The eye is Lamp Black with a tiny Snow White highlight. The bubbles are a circle of Snow White. Float Snow White inside the bubbles, and fl oat Indian Turquoise outside the bubble. Add a tiny Snow White highlight dot to them.

ASSORTED FISHThe light green fi sh are Lemonade, shaded Olive Green. Highlight the top and their fi ns Snow White. The dark green fi sh is Olive Green, shaded Hauser Medium Green, and highlighted Lemonade. The body fi n is Lemonade, and the outside fi ns are Snow White. ple. Wisp Calypso Blue, and then Whispering Turquoise for a tint. The head is Wild Orchid, shaded on the lower edge with Purple Rain. All of the eyes are Lamp Black.

    Medium Painter's Palette

GOLD FISHPaint the face Peaches’ n Cream. Float shading next to the body using Pumpkin. The eye is Lamp Black. Float Calypso Blue for a highlight. Add Snow White for a sparkle highlight. Outline the eye with Calypso Blue. Highlight the line at the top with Indian Turquoise. Float Tangelo Orange under the eye. The top lip is Bosenber-ry Pink. The lower lip is Tomato Red, shaded at the top (just under the top lip) with Deep Burgundy.

BODYDampen this area with water. Add colors and mottle them together just enough to slightly blend where they meet. Use Orange Twist, and Tangelo Orange. Float Scarlet around the open circle. Float Scarlet next to the face. Repeat if needed. Float Tomato Red at the top of her head where the splash is. When you are happy with your colors, then spatter with Orange Twist. The circles around the opening are Orange Twist. I used the top of a pencil for these (with the eraser removed). All of the large and small bubbles are Peaches n’ Cream, highlighted Snow White. The line dividing the face and body is Lamp Black.

GREEN FINDampen the background with water, and begin to lay in washes of Olive Green, Lemonade, and a small area of Hauser Medium Green. Soften the colors together where they meet. Spatter with Lemonade. Add circles to the right side by painting colors on a bottle top (or something of your choice) using Lemonade, Spa Blue, Orange Twist, and Calypso blue. Float Indian Turquoise on one side of the circle. Float thin Hauser Medium Green outside the circle, not all the way around. For the wave design, load your larger brush in Indian Turquoise and side load it in Calypso blue. Work the brush back and forth on your paper palette to slightly blend. Add in the wave keeping the darker blue at the bottom. The strokes and bubbles are dirty brush mixes of Indian Tur-quoise and Spa Blue. Highlight them and the bubbles with Snow White.

WHITE TAIL AREABase coat Snow White. The black stripe is Lamp Black.

FINISHINGSpray varnish your paintings several times allowing to dry inbetween sprays.
