2 Hills & Dales Happenings

From the Executive DirectorThis has been a very active spring and summerfor Hills & Dales.  While our legislators and Federaldecision makers were determining how and ifwe will continue to receive support, or whatprograms will remain intact for persons who reallydepend on medicaid, we at Hills & Dales havebeen busy doing what we always do!  striving forexcellence in the supports and services we offeroccurs every day and as Aristotle proclaimed, “weare what we repeatedly do, therefore excellence isnot an act but a habit.”

our habits include making a difference like thegarden and fresh produce that max is growing inour backyard, or the trips that individuals areenjoying from our Dreams & Desires auction atour golf outing which include outings to concerts,to the zoo, to the oshkosh Air show, as well asall of the day to day activities occurring at ourcommunity center.

Hills & Dales staff members are some of the finestpeople you will meet, and in honor of their desireto provide excellent services and programs theywere all recognized by celebrating a week in June.nearly 260 employees who had over 1,300 yearsof collective employment enjoyed T-shirts whichcarried the theme for the week “respect the newr word”, cook-outs and bowling.  This week longcelebration is a well-deserved habit which Hill &Dales has provided for many years and looksforward to continuing for many more.

Page 3: I!%˚ˇ T˛˚% I%%’ˆ - Hills & Dales · 2011. 8. 15. · at Theisens, Kwik stops, and other locations in the area. P.S. Please don’t forget to vote for Hills & Dales in the 100

The summer months are as busyat Hills & Dales as they are forany other typical family. much ofthese activities and events, suchas the annual summer picnic inwhich many from the Hills &Dales extended “family” areable to attend thanks to manyvolunteers, would not occur if itwasn’t for our large communityof supporters, so I send a giant“thank you” to you all!

Although this letter is beingwritten before the Annual Hills &Dales golf outing takes place, Iwould like to also thank all ofour many sponsors, golfers, anddonors who year after yearmake this the most successful

charlie giesepresident, Hills & DalesBoard of Directors

fundraising event we have.  I am always amazed at thenumber of supporters who donate significant amounts ofmoney to support the Dreams & Desires Auction. This portionof the evening provides opportunities for the Hills & Dalesresidents to experience truly remarkable summer outings likeovernight trips to chicago or various destinations throughoutWisconsin.  These individuals get to experience things theymay have never experienced before thanks to generousfriends who attend the golf outing and who realize that allpeople should have an opportunity to experience all that lifehas to offer.

Another golf event which supports Hills & Dales, the Jackie’sopen golf outing, is celebrating 25 years of existence onsunday, september 4th.  This event and its location in clinton,Iowa just shows that Hills & Dales does not just positivelyimpact Dubuque and the immediate area, but that we havebeen supporting people from throughout eastern Iowa for mostof our existence.  This golf event was started by Jack Hansen,a grandfather of a resident Amy, and after his passing a fewyears ago larry and linda Barnes whose daughter, also anAmy and who lived at Hills & Dales before her passing,decided to keep the tradition going.  Twenty five years oflongevity is a significant amount of time, and we thank theHansen and Barnes families and all of our supporters from theclinton area for their many years of support of our mission.

Hills & Dales is not always on the receiving end of support,as it has been fun hearing about Hector the dog and his visitto meet his new friends who send him Bogey Tales Dog Treats(which you can read more about on page 9).  This story justgoes to show that Hills & Dales is able to reach out andcontribute to the community and those in need as well.  ohand I can’t forget to add a shameless plug for those peanutbutter flavored Bogey Tales Dog Treats that you can purchaseat Theisen’s, Kwik stops, and other locations in the area.

P.S. Please don’t forget to vote for Hills & Dales in the 100Cars for Good Program and help us win a new Toyota onSunday, August 14th! (See page 10 for more details)
