determined to end the land claims of all of the remaining Indian

tribes east of the Mississippi River. The Cherokee stood against him,

suing for their land rights in the Supreme Court. Joyce Haworth will

explain the battle that followed and the removal of the tribes to

Oklahoma, illustrating the weaknesses of the Constitutional system,

the power of greed, and the suffering of a people.

T he Dick Van Dyke Show is

remembered as one of the wittiest

situation comedies. What is less well remembered

is that it was a deceptive innovator that contrasts sharply with

the situation comedies of the 1950s. It ushers in a new era and was the

first sitcom to be set in suburbia, feature both the world of work AND

a fully developed home life and offer rich and consistent backstories for

all the characters. A modern housewife featured a professional woman

in the workplace. This unique presentation will highlight one of the most

iconic programs and early TV history.

After the voyages of Columbus, plants, animals, technology, human

Terracotta figures from the tomb

of China's first emperor. In this

slide lecture, art historian Jeff Mishur discusses the process used

to create these figures. He also discusses other objects in this exhibition

of ancient artifacts and their relationship to China's imperial past.
