    Objectives

    Students will know how to locate places on a road map using

    coordinates.

    Students will understand and use symbols, legend, compass rose, and

    distance scale on a road map.

    Students will become oriented to the map of New Mexico.

    Students will become oriented to the location of Mesa Prieta and its

    relationship to the Rio Grande and the Rio !o "aliente, the cerros

    #olcanoes, Pilar and our modern

    cities and towns.

    of NM. +ncourage them to use directional words such as north, south, east

    and west. +xplain that today4s acti#ity will in#ol#e using a New Mexico

    road map to disco#er where their school is located and where Mesa Prieta is

    located. $hey will be using mapping skills that are #ery important when

    someone tra#els to a place where they ha#e ne#er been before.

    '. Pass out a NM road map to e#ery student. 5a#e them put their

    names on the front. $each students how to refold maps. 2sk e#eryone to

    locate their school on the map. 2s soon as someone finds it, stop the acti#ityand ask them how they found it. "ontinue with this process until e#eryone

    has found the town or #illage where your school is located. 6raw a c$+%ss

    &seon the board and explain how it shows the cardinal directions. North is

    usually at the top of the map. $o help the students remember the -

    directions, teach them 7Ne#er +at Sour 8orms(. 2sk the students to find the

    c$+%ss &seon their map. 6iscuss where they are in relation to other cities

    and landmarks using north, south, east and west. 0ind "olorado on the map.

    8hat direction is the compass rose pointing to "olorado. *north 8hen you

    go out for recess, draw a compass rose on the sidewalk using chalk or

    tempera paint. Practice finding the directions and pointing to landmarks and

    cities. +xample% Where are the Sangre De Cristo Mountains from

    Espaola?2s a class, say and point east. Re#iew the directions often.

    find the coordinates for their school and mark the location with a dot using a

    find it using the coordinates. $his may be repeated until e#eryone

    understands how it works. $his is a fun game.
