This client has six Sporting Clay Stations.

Here is an overhead view of the previous layout, showing target presentations.

Here are the target presentations for the first set up on the pond. The shooter can use any of the four stations to shoot any combination of targets, all released by remote control.

Shown below are a couple of examples of Compact Sporting. There is a large shooting deck, where 2, 3 or 4 shooters can take turns at shooting various target presentations.

Here there are 3 “wobble” traps below the deck, 3 targets coming from the towers and 3 rabbit targets.

There is no need for so many traps, but this guy loves his shooting. There are many different styles of Compact Sporting Decks, but the main objective is to keep out of the rain while

continuing to shoot. Some decks have cabins on the back to serve as a haven for lunch.

What area do I need? The limiting factor is the safety distance required by the insurance companies; 300 yards in direction of shot.

No shotgun pellet goes that far (7½ 1oz.load = 209 yards), but rules are rules. The actual area for shooting is about 30 – 50 yards deep, and the same wide. So if you have say 5 stations in a row,

where the targets can be shot over a 180 degree arc, then we would need:

Not to scale

Width = 300 + 150 + 300 times Depth = 300 = 750 x 300 = 225,000 sq.yds. = 47 acres.

As can be seen the majority of the room is for the Safety Distance, so adding additional stations doesn’t add that much to the area. Adding another 5 stations just adds 150 x 300 = 45,000 sq. yds. = 9 acres.

If however, the track is curved or oval, other measurements came into play.

Now look at a Compact Sporting Deck. Same safety rules apply.

Width (300 + 15 + 300) times depth 300 = 615 x 300 = 184,500 sq. yrds. = 38 acres.

There are lots of combinations for overlapping the safety areas. For example we can have lots of stations on the circumference of a large circle all firing into the middle.

Here we have a circle of around 320 yards diameter, and can install many stations. Theoretically, 40 stations, spaced 20 yards apart. All we need is 320 x 320 = 102,400 = 21 acres. A different twist on a private course, is using the same trap machines on multiple stations. For example, look below.

Here is a course I put in for a father and two sons. They always shot together. There are two trap sending clays left to right in the drawing below.

Station ONE, they shoot “going away” targets. Station TWO, they shoot crossing targets. Station THREE, they shoot “incoming” targets.

Obviously the three stations cannot be shot simultaneously. With imagination, a Sporting Clay Course can be set to use minimal traps for maximum stations.
