, The evaluation meetings were conducted by the chairman as per programme enclosed(Annexure-A) following the schedule provided by NBA.

The institute is located on the highway between Chennai and Kanchipuram and it is a part of acomplex having several institutes of SRM group. This college has been allocated 13.35 acres ofland by Valliammai Trust to the Valliammai Engineering College for educational purposes and

· the Call1PUSis situated there well demarcated from the surrounding institutes.

The college has adequate space and is in the process of shifting some of its activities to a new~ulti-storied building. Since the college is near the city of Chennai, most of the students arecoming from their home in Chennai. There are separate hostels for the boys and girls of thecollege, which are adequate for meeting the present demands. But the hostel for girls is a housingaccommodation of flats converted for this purpose. The condition of the rooms in the hostel, kitchens and the messes are fairly good. There are two canteens and one provides food for thestudents coming from outside and the other provides snacks. The quality of food is good and theprice is moderate. There is no accommodation for teachers or employees. The teachers and thestudents from Chennai come by college buses but the employees are not given this facility. Thereis bank in the complex but the post office is at about 1 km distance. SRM University has a large

· hospital attached to its medical college and the employees of the college receive subsidizedmedical treatment from there.

The college has a Governing Body (GB) with defined membership but the powers and theresponsibilities of the GB is not documented. This body meets once a year and now, it hasresolved to meet twice a year. All the policy decisions are taken in this body and implemented

· through the principal and the Heads of the departments. The functions are decentralized to thelevel of the Heads of the departments. The duties and the responsibilities of the principal, heads

_of the departments and the members of the faculty are documented. There is also a documentoutlining HR policy but none of the documents are published or displayed in the web or intranet.

The faculty has no participation in policymaking including policies related to academic matters. However, the college is affiliated to Anna University for its academic programmes.

The institute has implemented the pay scales of sixth pay commission but there are a fewanomalies pointed out to them and it has been promised to rectify them. The policy of

-maternity/paternity leave is old and does not conform to the current law of the land and it hasbeen promised that it will be rectified. It has been also promised that non teaching employeeswill be extended the facility of transport as it is available for the teachers.

The central library has 35,000 books, 125 journals and some online journals like IEEE. Thecatalogue and library operations are automated. There is repro graphic facility in the. library. The

, laboratory facilities are good and updated. There are central computing and internet facilities. There are adequate facilities of internet and computing in the central computing centre. Theyhave a number of software including MATLAB, LABVIEW etc. However, there should be moreprofessional software.

The institute offers Bachelor of Engineering programme in seven branches apart from MBA. Ithas applied for accreditation of three Bachelor of Engineering courses in IT, Computer Scienceand Engineering, and Electronics and Communication Engineering, all of which had been

_ accredited since 2007. The management programme has applied for accreditation for the firsttime. In the engineering departments there are no teachers possessing Ph. D. degree although allthe teachers have M. Tech. degree and many of them are registered for Ph. D. In the managementdepartment there are teachers possessing Ph. D. degree. There are some teachers who haveresearch publications but their number is limited. There is no sponsored research in thedepartments under consideration. It has been emphasized that with regular travel of about onehour each in the morning and in the evening during return and teaching loads of about 8 hours oflecture 2 hours of tutorial and 12 hours of practical classes per week, there is hardly any energyleft for research. In addition, the teachers do not have individual cabin and are in a commonroom. The college has promised to provide for individual cabins and PC on every desk. Thelaboratory facilities are good and updated. There are central computing and internet facilities .

. After detailed review of the institute facilities and the activities of the departments offering theprogrammes for which accreditation has been sought, the reports were finalized in the evening of6th August. In the exit meeting next morning with the college representatives, the strengths andweaknesses were outlined and an option for exiting the assessment for accreditation was offered. The college declined this option for any of the programmes being evaluated.
