Office of the Commissioner MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

ALLAN H. (BUD) SELIG Commissioner of Baseball

Welcome,

On behalf of Major League Baseball and its thirty clubs, I would like to extend our best wishes to all the players, coaches and supporters involved in the Maccabiah Games. We at Major League Baseball are thrilled that baseball is making its debut in the Games and hope that players and fans alike are treated to some excellent baseball over the coming week.

Being included in the Maccabiah Games is further proof that baseball continues to grow in stature across the world. Baseball may be known as “America’s Pastime,” but its reach extends to all corners of the globe. Baseball truly is an international game, one that brings people together from all around the world.

The makeup of players participating in the Maccabiah Games resembles what we are experiencing with our Major League teams. Nearly 30% of all players on Major League Opening Day rosters were born outside the United States and this number continues to grow each year. Who knows, perhaps one of the promising young players you see on the field this week might even be a future Major Leaguer!

To everyone at the Games, again let us pass along our best wishes for a wonderful tournament!

Sincerely,

Allan H. (Bud) Selig Commissioner of Baseball

Welcome to the 2005 Maccabiah Baseball Tournament

Baseball Organizing Committee of the 17th Maccabiah Games

בס"דOn behalf of the

Israel Association of Baseball A”R (IAB), I would like to wel-come you to the 17th Maccabiah Games. Baseball today is a growing sport in Israel. As the IAB approach-es its 20th anniversary, we are proud that baseball will be played for the first time as an event in these Maccabiah Games. From our perspective, these Maccabiah Games represent a culmination of the dreams of many people who have worked hard over the years to bring the great game of baseball to our great country, Israel. No better ex-ample of that dedication can be made than those members of the Tournament Organiz-ing Committee listed below, all of whom vol-unteered their time and expertise to bring you these games.

We are also proud of the young men who make up the Israel team, the coaches and support staff, who have dedicated this year

to representing Israel in this first Maccabiah tournament. However, these Maccabiah Games are not the first that were to include baseball in its program. Indeed, four years ago, the 16th Maccabiah had been designat-ed as the inaugural games for baseball. Un-fortunately, to our great disappointment, the games were cancelled when terror struck its evil hand. Later, when the games were rein-stated in a modified format, it was too late for baseball.

Therefore, the real champions of these games have already been determined. They are you, the players, coaches, families and friends that have come to Israel to support us and our great game of baseball. In these games, we will all be rooting for the home team and each team is the home team in our eyes.

Thank you.

Baseball in IsraelThe IAB Mission

The Israel Association of Baseball A”R (IAB), the national governing body for baseball, is dedicated to the development of the sport of baseball in Israel.

Players are the heart of our organization. Therefore, player development of both

baseball and “life” skills is central to achieving our objectives. The IAB has established many programs to develop its players’ baseball skills, both physical and mental, including throwing, fielding, hitting, running, and knowledge of the game and its rules. Such player devel-opment demands superior instruction and coaching, quality fields and facilities, and the availability of appropriate baseball frame-works for all age and skill levels.

Of equal importance, the IAB is commit-ted to the development of its players’ “life” skills, particularly dedication, discipline, mu-tual respect, and teamwork. Throughout all, IAB programs emphasize fair play, sports-manship, and tolerance.

As an extension of the above, the IAB aims to contribute positively to the fabric of Israeli society, fostering coexistence, by offering a meeting place for any child or adult in Israel who is interested in playing baseball, regard-less of sex, color, religion, language, or eco-nomic ability.

Finally, the IAB aspires to be a worthy rep-resentative of the State of Israel in interna-tional competitions and forums, as well as

an ambassador in the strengthening of Israel-Diaspora relations.

History of the IABThe Israel Association of Baseball has been

developing baseball in Israel since 1986. From modest beginnings, the IAB has grown to a fully-integrated baseball program from T-ball to our Senior League, now in its third season of play. The IAB sponsors baseball clinics, Israeli leagues for all age groups, and domestic and international tournaments. We are also the liaison and Israeli representative for baseball in numerous Israeli and interna-tional forums, including the Israel Olympic Committee, the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) and the International Base-ball Federation (IBAF).

The IAB also has been the proud ambas-sador of Israel in international competitions through its national team program. For over a decade, Israeli national teams have been breaking new ground, representing Israel in international competitions throughout the world. In many of these competitions, op-posing teams are exposed to Israel for the very first time. The Israeli name emblazoned on our team uniforms gives an extra dimen-sion to our competition and sportsmanship.

In 2004, Israel sent four national teams abroad to represent our country in European baseball tournaments. Among the teams, for the first time, was a Senior National Team

which competed in the European Senior B Pool Championships in Germany. The Senior National Team was a true “Made in Israel” product, as all the players were Israelis who grew up in our IAB leagues and programs. The team itself was the Cinderella team of the tournament and came within one game of the championship.

This year, the IAB will be adding another first as we host and participate in baseball’s inaugural tournament in the Maccabiah Games. In addition, our Juvenile National Team will be representing Israel at the CEB European championship tournament in Chisinau (Kishinev), Moldova (see photo on page 25).

The IAB is a fully-integrated organization. Religious and secular, boys and girls, rich and poor, kibbutznikim and city dwellers, Jews, Christians, and Arabs all play together on the same field, and on the same teams. Women play a prominent role in the organization and hold key positions in our administration as well as on our national board.

IAB leagues are organized by age in accor-dance with CEB age categories:

The IAB holds local tournaments throughout the year, opening with Hanukah youth tour-naments, and concluding with interregional All-Star Tournaments, the Regional Invita-tional Tournament, and the Senior League playoffs, each June-July.

The IAB organizes many clinics for coach-es, umpires, and players, with instructors from both Israel and abroad. Instructors from abroad have included ex-major leagu-ers, MLB executives, the chief umpire of the International Baseball Association and pro-fessional coaches from the U.S. and Europe.

Since 2003, the IAB has instituted an um-pires’ training and certification program. Israeli umpires also serve regularly at CEB, most recently at the Senior Tournament in Germany in 2004.

A duly-elected Board of Directors is re-sponsible for overall administration of the organization. Daily business of the IAB is di-rected by an Executive Committee, officers, and Regional Directors.

Future Plans of the IABThe IAB’s plans for the future of Israel

Baseball are in three areas: • Field development• Continuing development of coaching and

player skills, through clinics and mentoring programs

• International tournaments in Israel and in-creasing the link with the Jewish Diaspora

Field DevelopmentThe IAB is undertaking a campaign to con-

struct or modify five to seven fields through-out Israel, including a national training cen-ter in the center of the country . The success of Israel baseball has meant that the current field infrastructure is operating at close to 150% capacity. It is becoming more and more necessary to play more than one game simultaneously on our existing fields. Many areas are unable to play baseball at all, be-cause there is no field available. Without a field, there can be no baseball.

Coaching and Player SkillsIn 2005-2006, the IAB intends to further

integrate its player training programs to support the league infrastructure. The “In-troduction to Baseball” course will be ex-panded for minors on a region-wide basis in 2006. In addition, specific skills clinics are being developed for the older age groups. The IAB is preparing a revised coaches’ training program which will be mandatory for all coaches and assistant coaches. Finally, the IAB is exploring the feasibility of inviting a mentor coach from abroad for a two-to-six month fellowship.

TournamentsA primary IAB objective is to develop in-

ternational tournaments that are held in

Israel. For the summer of 2006, the IAB is extending invitations for an international tournament for Jewish youth, aged 13 and 14, here in Israel.

Jewish teams in Argentina and Mexico have already expressed an interest in partici-pating in the tournament and we anticipate that they will be joined by teams from North America and Europe as well.

Dolomiti Traverse (Italy)This 70-Km traverse of the dramatic ancient coral peaks and lush valleys of the Dolomiti packs more pure hiking joy than anywhere else we know. (see photo above)

Kilimanjaro Summit (Tanzania)"The Mother of all Treks" to the Roof of Africa - 19,340 ft-high Uhuru Peak. This is about as high as one can go in the world without technical climbing.

Kackar Circuit (Turkey)A delightful circuit route through the beauty and serenity of the rough and tumble Kackar range, with a taste of traditional Turkish rural life.

Everest Panorama (Nepal)"Trekking" - Outside Magazine's book on the top 20 treks in the world - describes this as "the trek you would choose if [chas ve'shalom] you could only make one in your life". It might have to do with the fact that our destination, Gokyo Ri, boasts a dramatic panoramic view of Everest and three others of the six highest mountains in the world. But that's not all !

Great Glen Way (Scotland)Hike through another place and time - across the rugged Scottish highlands, past flowing rivers and the mythic Loch Ness, through serenely beautiful villages and hamlets. Self-guided at your convenience – the perfect family summer excursion and introduction to trekking.
