‘IA• ʻIA is a word that is attached to action verbs to make
it a passive verb as in the following example:
ʻAi Eat
ʻAi au i ka ʻopihi. I eat ʻopihi.
ʻAi ʻia Eaten
ʻAi ʻia ka ʻopihi e aʻu. ʻOpihi is eaten by me.
NĀ LAʻANA (Examples)
Action Sentence: I watched Grey’s Anatomy.Passive Sentence: Grey’s Anatomy was watched by me.
Action Sentence: My dad broke the dish. Passive Sentence: The dish was broken by my dad.
Action Sentence: Kalani is driving the car. Passive Sentence: The car is being driven by Kalani.
USE OF E• Simply note who the action was
done by after “e” as in the following:
Kaʻi + memeʻa……….e ka wahine by the woman
Papani……….e lākou by them
Iʻoa……….e Puanani by Puanani
EXCEPTIONS
• In ʻIA sentences, the word “by” is translated as E. There are two exceptions when using the word E:
1. by me E AʻU
2. by him/her E IA

NĀ LAʻANA (Examples)
• Ke hoʻāla nei ka ʻīlio iā Lehua.The dog is waking up Lehua.
• Ke hoʻāla ʻia nei ʻo Lehua e ka ʻīlio. Lehua is being awakened by the dog.
NĀ LAʻANA (Examples)
• Ua haʻi ʻo Manai i nā moʻolelo.Manai told the stories.
• Ua haʻi ʻia nā moʻolelo e Manai.The stories are being told by Manai.
NĀ LAʻANA (Examples)
• E hīmeni ana lākou i ke mele.They are going to sing the song.
• E hīmeni ʻia ana ke mele e lākou.The song is going to be sung by them.
NĀ LAʻANA (Examples)
• Kōkua wau iā Kaipo.I help Kaipo.
• Kōkua ʻia ʻo Kaipo e aʻu.Kaipo is helped by me.

• Ua ʻike ʻia ka manu e ia.The bird was seen by him.
• Ke kiloi ʻia nei ka ʻōpala e kona pāpā. The rubbish is being thrown away by her dad.
