What is Project-Based Learning? ● A teaching method in which students gain
knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate a complex question or challenge. The focus is on the learning process and learner-peer-content interaction.
In order to be considered project-based learning, a project should be:➔ Student driven➔ Solving a problem with a driving question➔ Open-ended➔ Real world➔ On-going➔ Reflected on and revised regularly➔ Curriculum focused➔ Published for a real audience

Projects vs. PBL
PBL: Essential Elements Checklist
Why PBL?Research consistently shows that students taught through PBL display:
● Enhanced student performance● Increased student motivation and
engagement● Improved teacher/student
interaction● Increased development of the 4 C’s
of 21st Century Learning: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication
Why Technology?Incorporating the Internet, laptops, tablets and even smartphones into the curriculum has many benefits for teachers and students alike:
● Engages students and creates active learners
● Encourages individual learning and growth
● Prepares students for the real world● Creates more engaged and
successful teachers● Increased development of the 4 C’s
of 21st Century Learning: creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication
When PBL & Technology get together... It’s the perfect storm!Knowing what we know about PBL and Technology, how do you think these two go
hand in hand?
Use the Internet to brainstorm ideas, conduct research, gather info, & view
real examples online!
Use digital tools to collaborate, think
critically to solve a problem, and create
projects!
Use digital tools to communicate
project results and publish work for a
real audience!
Getting Started with PBL:
1. Select a good planning document, including a timeline, or create your own! a. Decide on your driving
question (try the “Tubric” method!):
i. Student-friendly (spark student interest)
ii. Open-ended, but focusediii. Not “Google-able”iv. Challenging/rigorous
b. Identify standards addressed and decide what students will know/be able to do

The Performance Task ➔ What will students do or create?
Hint: It’s not one-size fits all! Each student or group might do completely different projects and still achieve the desired end result.
1. This is the “meat” of your project. a. Student-centeredb. Voice and choicec. Real-world tasks
2. Technology will make this more engaging and hit higher levels of Bloom’s. Some ideas include:
a. Digital presentationb. Podcastingc. Infographicd. Debatee. Video clip/movief. Blueprint
g. Graphs/chartsh. Comic stripi. Digital newsletterj. Screencast tutorial
k. Keynote address/speechl. App design
m. Play or skit

The Assessment(s):Think of this as three separate parts:
1. Formative Assessments (progress)a. Are students reaching their goals and
changing their course of action as needed?
i. Can be exit tickets,check-ins, progress calendar, etc..
2. Student Performance (success skills)a. How did the student perform during
group interactions? Did he/she fulfill group roles? Demonstrate 21st Century Skills?
i. Can be student self-reflection, group-reflection, teacher observations, etc..
3. Summative Assessment (meeting the standards)
a. A more traditional assessment to grade the final project (this will look different for different project types)
Easy-to-use, digital tools that promote collaboration :
Publishing/Sharing:**Note** Always make sure to get
parental consent before using any online publishing tool
➔ Google Classroom (Students post work in the Classroom Stream. Invite parents, too!)
➔ Seesaw (Showcase student work to parents via a private class feed)
➔ #GridPals (Share projects with your digital penpal!)
Brainstorming/Note Keeping:
➔ Coggle (Create mind maps with others)
➔ Google Keep (like a digital notebook!
➔ Flipgrid (use short videos to share ideas on a topic)
➔ Google Docs or Google Draw (create your own graphic organizers that students can share)
Creating:
