I’m pregnant! Is it still allright to colour my hair?

Ask the colour companiesdirectly for an answer, for

most of us our only link with thecolour companies is the salesrep who visits us to take our

orders. The first rule of salesis never say anythingnegative about a product,so the answer is likely tobe “absolutely safe”.

I believe hair colourcompanies to be professionalresponsible people whowould not market a product if itwas unsafe to use duringpregnancy, without a writtenwarning. I am assuming thatyou are asking this questionbecause you already colouryour hair and wish to continueduring pregnancy. Thatbeing the case then you

would have already had a skin test before you begancolouring your hair. The result was obviously negative andYOU are not allergic to hair dye.

If, however, you want to colour your hair for the first time andhave just found out that you are pregnant. A skin test iscompulsory before any first time colour, pregnantor not, as the test will show if you are allergic tohair dye. What about your BABY? How can applyingchemical to hair possibly effect the formation of an embryo?Well, the fear is that the human hair is an open door to theblood supply. I have read patents from hair colour companiesthat prove this, by reporting that up to 72 hours after theapplication of hair dye to the hair, traces are still being found inthe subject’s urine. Of course none of these subjects werepregnant. Once the hair dye is in the blood stream it travelsright throughout the body before exiting through the body’snatural waste systems. However, it is the mother’s bloodstreamthat feeds and nurtures the baby for the whole nine monthsthat the baby is growing in the womb. Or is it?

Once the hair dye or any foreign bodies enter the bloodstreamit travels down the main artery (The Aorta) until it divides intotwo main arteries’ (Iliac arteries’) to feed each leg and foot.Blood from the Iliac artery flows into the Uterine artery. And it isblood from the Uterine artery that feeds the baby, but notdirectly. Imagine the baby sealed in a box (the mother’swomb) protected from all outside influences of the mothersbody. How does it breathe and feed? This is the marvel of thePlacenta and the Umbilical Cord. The Placenta is a large

Pancake like structure that attaches itself to the inside wall ofthe womb. Blood from the Uterine artery flows directly into theplacenta. The Placenta works as a filter and baby’s waste bag,it is here that all impurities and foreign objects in the blood areseparated and stored in the Placenta until after the birth, nowonly purified blood and oxygen travel down the Umbilical Cordand into the baby, and in turn the baby’s waste and gasestravel up the Umbilical Cord back into the Placenta. Once thebaby is born and breathing through its nose and throat, theUmbilical cord and the placenta are no longer needed, so theUmbilical Cord is cut and the Umbilical Cord and Placenta aredisposed of.

So it would seem from this research that after eleven weeks itis absolutely safe to colour your hair during pregnancy. Whatabout from conception to the eleventh week? It seems asthough God has that covered as well. Growth over the firstseven days takes place in the Fallopian tubes, during this timethe cells are encased in a protective fluid rather like a smallbubble or egg.

On the seventh day this bubble travels up the Fallopian tubeand into the Womb where it attaches itself to the inside wall ofthe womb, at this stage the baby (Cells) are completelydependent on oxygen and nutrients from within the Fluidbubble, not from the mothers blood supply. It is not until theplacenta and Umbilical cord are fully formed that the baby getsoxygen and nutrients from the mother’s blood, via the Placentaand Umbilical cord.

However, I am not a doctor this is just the result of an internetsearch. It would be really helpful if the colour companieswould pass on this information or question it if they disagree. As hair colourist we really need to know the answer.

What do you say to the client who asks you this question? You are a haircolourist not a doctor so how can you know the answer to this question.Where do you go for advice on this subject?

Wow! How did Coloursoft get so lucky? This interview is puregold dust. Daniel is not the sort of man who has made aname for himself many years ago and not worked since. Iwas amazed to learn that he still works a full day everyday inthe salon creating amazing colours for an A list clientele, andwishes to continue to do so forever.

Tanya Hennessey: Hi Daniel, could you tell us a littleabout your academic years and at what age did you enterhairdressing?

Daniel Galvin: Oh My God!!! To be true, I was not at allacademic. The subject where I excelled, and always came topwas sports. Football/athletics etc: It was in sports that I showedvery early leadership skills when I was made responsible for240 other children at just sixteen years of age. I think this is alldown to having what we call today “common sense”. So I leftschool at the earliest opportunity with no real academicqualifications. Just itching to get out there, and really hungry toget started.

TH: With whom did you train?

DG: Well my history in hairdressing began with my grandfather, who worked for the top salon in London between the years1890-1910. It was compulsory for him to wear top hat and tailsto work, and when he was working on hair had to wear whitecotton gloves. He died when my father was only 1 year old andmy grandmother remarried eight years later to an Irishmancalled Galvin, which is why we have the name today.

20 years old, my father who had never known his father, ironically, opened his own salon in London. When I reached theage of 13 years and needed pocket money, I worked for myfather sweeping the salon floor and hanging up towels. I think itwas then that I decided this is what I want to do with my life.Straight out of school I got a job as an apprentice at a saloncalled Figaro in Park Road London. 2 years into myapprenticeship I was not happy with my progress, and decidedto move to a salon called Lamartine in Wembley Park tocomplete the 3rd year of my apprenticeship.

It was in this 3rd year that I began to apply hair colour andrealised this is what I wanted to do in hairdressing. Aftercompleting my apprenticeship, I spoke with my brother Joshuawho had just returned from working in New York about thepossibility of becoming a hair colourist at this time unheard of.Joshua was very supportive and recommended ten top salonsthat I should approach.

I took a position as a junior colourist with Olofson the top salonin Knightsbridge. It was here that I met Mavis and we marriedwhen I was 20 years old, and we have been together for over46 years.

TH: Were your years with Leonard responsible for thebulk of your photographic work?

DG: I was happy working at Olofson with no plans to move onwhen in the same week I received a phone call from VidalSassoon and Leonard asking to see me. I was offered positions

Daniel Galvin OBE, Spiritual, family manwith two sons, one daughter and the largesthair colour salon owner in all of Europe –and the world’s leading hair colourist.

at both salons but decided to go with Leonard who had thevision that not only was he about to open the largest hair salonin Europe, it would also contain the largest hair colour floor inthe whole of Europe.

I took the position offered by Leonard, and within 3 weeks I washead colourist, within 1 year a Director and within 3 years aminor shareholder. Leonard and I always worked together onevery photograph, and he encouraged in everything that I did.He made sure that even black & white photographs in Voguecarried the credit for colour by Daniel at Leonard.

Our crazy colour photos where an attempt to shock the publicin recognising colour as a possibility for them and not just tocover grey. Or photos were always created by the same team.Leonard would cut, I would colour, Zandra Rhodes would dothe clothes, Barbara Daly would do the makeup and eitherBarry Lategan or Clive Arrowsmith would do the photography.

I was in the salon one day, when a young man and his girlfrienda shampoo girl from Neasden came to see Leonard. Theyoung man (Justin De Vilinue) asked Leonard if he thought thegirl with shoulder length red hair had potential as a model. We

both agreed that with a little work she could be somethingspecial. Leonard called Deidre Mc Shary from the Daily Mailand asked if she would come to look at her.

Deidre also agreed so Leonard cut her hair short in acompletely new look, then I spent eight hours on the colour. Wesent her off to the studio and the next day in a double pagefeature she had been reborn as Twiggy. The first real supermodel that was received in New York and Japan as big as theBeatles.

TH: What year did you open your first salon?

DG: I had been with Leonard 15 years and was now a 25%shareholder. I approached Leonard with the possibility ofopening Daniel Galvin and Leonard hair colour salons aroundthe country. It was not the route that Leonard wanted to take, but I was passionate about the possibility of opening the firsthair colour salon in the world.

In 1977 I went to Leonard and told him that I was starting myown salon and that I would not be taking any staff with meexcept my junior if that was OK by him, he agreed and offered

to help in any way he could. So I opened my first salon inGeorge Street in 1977 with 11 staff. 3 colourists, 3 stylists, 1manicurist, 1 receptionist and 3 juniors. All new staff, I wouldhave seen it as a betrayal of the man who had helped andgiven me so much to take staff from him. It is my belief that youshould never bite the hand that feeds you, because you willnever be successful that way.

By 1986 we had grown to 36 staff and moved to largerpremises further up George Street, and in 2003 we opened thissalon still in George Street with 120 staff and still growing. Ithas been my belief that it is better to have one large salonrather than a chain; it is easier to control standards.

TH: Is it true that you developed your own vegetablecolours, which led to the birth of Crazy Colour?

DG: In 1967 I was developing vegetable colours to create verydifferent colours for our photo shoots, than we were able to getfrom the hair colour manufacturers.

It was never my intention for these colours to be worn by thepublic; they were just for photo shoots. However, in 1971

Renato Brunas from a company called Renbow brought out arange of vegetable colours called Crazy Colour, the same nameas I had been calling my vegetable colours for years. ThePunks soon got hold of Crazy Colour and were walking up anddown Kings Road with pink Mohicans.

We decided, time to move on. We did the fashion editor ofHarpers Bazaar hair with many different colours, put a sparklerin it and said “that’s it no more crazy colour, for us it goes outwith a bang in 1971.”

TH: Are you the man responsible for changing the face ofJapan by teaching hair colour there?

DG: In 1988 I was headhunted to introduce my concept into theJapenese market by a hair colour company named Hoyu. At thatpoint hair colouring in Japan was pretty much non-existent andnow there are 110,000,000 people that colour their hair.

Permanent waving had been massive in Japan for a number ofyears but was on the decline as there was a definite movetowards glossy good condition hair. Hoyu had seen this andwere aware that hair colour was the future.

98 Hair Colour Interview

After two weeks, before I returned home the directors of Hoyuwere clear that they wished to go forward with me andregistered my name, within two years everything possible thatwas bought for the salon carried the Daniel Galvin brand. I hadto teach Hoya technicians all my techniques so that they couldteach the salon owners who bought the product.

Salons were visited by reps driving minis with the Union Jackon the roof and weren’t allowed to buy the product until theyhad been trained. 1996 and we started a show calledColoursplash, where we did hair colour on Pop Stars andactors on stage, it created such a stir we were on 10 Newschannels all over Japan.

The Daniel Galvin brand now rebranded to Daniel Galvin ProMaster X is also in Singapore, Taiwan and Korea. But to answeryour question yes I am the man who they blame for millions ofOriental people colouring their hair.

TH: Do you have any more new products in the pipeline?

DG: I am always experimenting but a product I am most proudof here in the UK is my detox treatment. It is designed toremove the layer of everyday pollution that sticks to the hairand makes it dull and lacking shine. Once the hair has beendetoxed it shines like a freshly polished mirror reflecting lightand shine as it moves. A fabulous product!!!

TH: How many children do you have? And do any ofthem work for the Daniel Galvin Brand?

DG: I have 3 children, my first born was Louis who wanted tobe a PR. With a little bit of help from me Louis was able to workfor one of my clients the top PR in the country at the time LynneFranks. After a couple of years Louis decided that she wouldlike to work in my product company, when she saw the buzz ofthe salon she was hooked, and trained to become a haircolourist. Louis then worked in Canada and later New Yorkbefore returning to London with her own product range “LouiseGalvin” which are outstanding products.

My second child was Daniel Galvin Junior who wanted to be aJournalist. Seeing the buzz in the salon when he worked herefor pocket money, while he was still at school. Led him todecide to work here as a hair colour technician instead. Now hehas his own salon on West Halkin Street.

James Galvin is my youngest son, and he wanted to be anactor after one or two minor parts in “The Bill” he to decidedthat he wanted to go into hairdressing but not colour, hewanted to be a stylist. Joshua set up a year’s training course atVidal Sassoon’s academy. After which he uprooted everythingand moved his family to Los Angeles, and opened a salon withhis friend on Melrose Avenue called “Galvin Benjamin.”

TH: Do you still trek through Nepal every year?

DG: Yes I am off in two weeks to Kathmandu with Brendan mytrekking partner. We are going 18,500 feet up the mountains tovisit the great lakes of Gokyo. This is the same level as the

Everest base camp. I love the views and the fact that there isno electricity; it is a very spiritual place. I believe in god and it iswonderful to be able to take in all that he has created. My bestideas have come whilst trekking.

TH: What was it like to receive your OBE?

DG: So proud, it makes me even more proud to be British. Iwas honoured in extremely good company; Vivien Westwoodwas also honoured that day. When I arrived at the palace withMavis and my three children, we drove through the arch into anopen square within the palace building. We all went in to alarge hall on the ground floor and Daniel Junior who has arange of products with the Duchy came out of the toilet andsaid to me “I don’t believe it they have Molton Brown products inthere”.

Then all the people being honoured were called up to the RoyalArt Gallery on the first floor. It was Prince Charles who honouredme that day. He amazed me by knowing all about mygrandfather and that I did Princess Diana’s hair. He jovially said“I hope this does not mean you will be retiring Daniel” itseemed such a light hearted affair, I cheekily asked about theproducts in the toilet. Prince Charles nodded saying “yes!sometimes things like that happen with housekeeping.”

When I came away from the palace that day with my wife andfamily I felt so proud to be British, and thought life just does notget any better than this.

TH: Finally Daniel would you like to say a few wordsabout Joshua?

DG: Joshua! My lovely older brother and my very best friendjust gave and gave to both this industry and to me. Now he hasgone leaving me wanting more. I loved him so much. Hispassion for this industry and in particular the youth of thisindustry never tired.

He oversaw the training of the youth in this Salon, I remembergoing home and saying goodbye at the door, Joshua wouldcall and gesture come here, come, you have to see this cut.Nobody’s skill went unnoticed by him.

No one man has done more for this industry, except maybeVidal Sassoon. He was an ambassador for our craft, presidentof and honoured by every hairdressing organisation from theFellowship, Intercoiffure, NHF, Guild and City & Guilds Etc:

There are people associated with our profession who are nothairdressers but feel they are in a position of power. They nevergave Joshua the credit he deserved; they should be ashamedof themselves. I hope they recognise who I mean.

I just can’t get my head around it; I block it from my mind, thenI will pass a photograph of him and...

Bar Joshua no one man has done more for thisindustry, except maybe Vidal Sassoon. He wasan ambassador for our craft, president of andhonoured by every hairdressing organisation

DANIELGALVINFINGERPAINTINGPROCEDURE

Watching Daniel work it is not hard to see why he isacclaimed the world’s greatest hair colourist. Daniel’snew finger painting technique is truly amazing, I watchedDaniel take Lilly’s hair and return the top layer to itsnatural colour and then lighten the ends, and all wellwithin forty minutes.

Yes!!! The bleached highlights were taken back to a dark ashblonde in under thirty minutes, with just one applicationresulting in a perfect colour match without any green or khakicast. How is this possible? Daniel has discovered that applyingdarker colours to bleached hair can be successful in achievingthe desired colour in one straight application, by mixing the

colour with 1.9% (6 volume) Hydrogen Peroxide. Only very fewcases need pre-pigmenting with a red.

Using his fingers the whole time, Daniel worked a product thathe calls “whitewash” into the ends of the hair. Timing for this, including applying to all the ends and processing was underten minutes. If it is hair colour that runs through your veins, thentake a moment to study the photos of Daniel working and thefinished result, so natural yet so technical. From Coloursoft’spoint of view these photos are greatness, an issue that willnever be equalled showing the master at work, never beforeseen. I have looked at these photos over and over and thetechnique is faultless, the result outstanding.

UK distributors for Natulique Craig Rucastle and TonyByrne find themselves in a David and Goliath situation, standing before the giants with only the belief in theirproduct, as a sling and stone.

Tony and Sonya first came across Natulique in Denmarkwhilst sharing their considerable knowledge there. They sawimmediately that it delivered on its promises. The productwas developed by a Dane called Stig Bundgaard who hadbeen able to acquire an Eco Certification for the productlegitimising and endorsing the products eco friendly qualities.

Tony and Sonya enquired about a UK distributorship. Ontheir return to the UK they approached Craig to form a newcompany called Ecolour to import and distribute theNatulique brand. Tony and Sonya have many years haircolour experience, and Craig has a large established salesand marketing company with warehousing and logisticsalready in place, so the perfect ingredients to succeed.

After a full year’s testing in the UK, it was an easy decision tomake; we formed Ecolour and began to import Natulique. Weare under no illusions as to the task before us, but we believein the product so much. The large colour companies in thiscountry have done such a wonderful job promoting theirproducts over the last 50 years that salons think “well if it isnot broke then don’t try and fix it”. Any new company starting

out would only be fooling themselves if they thought that theyhad the budget to take these guys on. That said there is asmall area of the market that is looking for an eco friendlyorganic hair colour. This is our market. It would be fair to saythat organic products that have gone before have not alwaysdelivered what is written on the can. Natulique does.

We are the new kids on the block, so why wouldn’t we visitsalons and say “with no commitment on your part, yousupply a model and we will give you a completely freedemonstration and if you like, you can buy”.

Our range is small, so no tubes gathering dust that will neverbe used. There are no demands to by the full range orminimum orders just buy what you need. Delivery is usuallywithin 24 hours and in some cases the same day.

A colour salon looking at our range will notice that we do notmanufacture any form of bleach. Will we develop one just tofill this gap? I would say no unless it fitted into the format ofour range. Every one of our products has an e-cert label onthe packaging, and that is very important to us.

Model Charlie’s hair was once bleached whiteresulting in quite a bit of chemical damage, and thenit was died back to its natural colour, causingfurther damage, and resulting in a green\khakicast on the hair.

Sonya suggested to Charlie that she would useNatulique a new completely organic hair dye toavoid further damage. Sonya made some reallyoptimistic claims about the product and itsperformance. For example Sonya claimed thatthis tint breaks the golden rule and lightens eventinted hair. It is possible to see from thephotographs that this is completely true.

Sonya started underneath at the back taking asection from ear to ear using- 8.07 with 20vol. directly through roots, then using 8.07with 10 volume hydrogen peroxidethrough middle lengths and ends. Fineslices on the hairline at the front - 8.07with 20 volume hydrogen peroxide.

Rest of the head - half 4.07 and half 5.07with 20 volume hydrogen peroxide. Theoverall development time for this completecolour procedure was about 40 minutes, without any further damage to the hair.

COLOUR CHANGE PROCEDURE

• Roots - base 6 cool• Mid length - 4.02• Ends - base 3• Shade required - Majirel 666

The client requested to change her colour completely from adark blackcurrant to hot red. This required lifting out the oldcolour by cleansing the hair in preparation to accept the newcolour. (Skin test prior to colouration).

• Cleansing - The hair was cleansed with Effasor & 20 volumeperoxide as areas of the hair were very dark.

• Hair was sectioned and worked through quickly & efficientlypaying particular attention to stubborn dark areas where therewas colour build up.

• I needed to lift the hair to a warm level 6 that would be theperfect undercoat for the new colour to sit on.

• Effasor was emulsified into the hair being careful not to overlaponto the root area & left for up to 45 min.

• Once the desired level of lift has been achieved, hair wasrinsed & prepped for the next stage.

COLOUR PHASE IN

• As the hair had slightly lightened in areas due to uneven colourthe next phase was necessary to give an even base colour.

• Hair was pre coloured with Diacolor Gelee base 6 + coppermixed with Gelee releaser paying attention to the lightestpieces in the hair. This was left for 10minutes to create theperfect undercoat as seen in the diagram.

• Hair was washed and prepped for the colour procedure.

COLOUR PROCEDURE

• Hair was sectioned into four equal parts, starting from the napeof the neck working in neat sections up towards the crown, andfrom front hairline up towards crown area. Colour was thenworked through mid length ends.

Gemma really wanted pink hair and tried to achievethis herself. Her thinking was right in as much as youneed to pre-lighten the base before applying the pink.

However, the first colour she boughtwas a hair dye that actually put colourinto the hair instead of removingnatural pigments. This actually put lotsof yellow pigments into the hairwithout actually showing becauseGemma’s natural hair base is so dark.Gemma felt that it had not worked sobought another high lift tint from theChemist.

Gemma applied the second colour inan attempt to get a much lighter base.A job made much harder nowbecause, not only does she have toremove the natural pigments, she hasto try to remove the artificial yellowpigments from the first application. The result is very patchy and brassy.

Enter your editor who is going totake a fresh look at this...

Step 1It is black hair and full ofyellow artificial pigmentwhich will never bleach outcompletely.

A strand test shows that thehair will stand furtherbleaching as long as theapplication is fast and even.To help with the speed ofapplication I have blown dryGemma’s hair straight, sothere are now no tangles.

StudioSessions Step 3Once washed of f I had to makea decision as to whether it waslight and even enough toproceed with the Pink vegetabledye, or to spot bleach areas thatwere still not quite light enough.

Although Gemma’s hair was stillquite strong I decided that asGemma was not trying tobecome a platinum blonde, andthe fact that all the artificialyellow pigment would nevercome out no matter how much Ibleached it. I decided that it wasjust not worth the risk especiallyas the bleach base was nowperfect for pink, and the pinkwould cover any variation of liftin the bleach base shade.

David’s largest solo exhibition todate was opened by the burningof one of his match headsculptures; this is the ultimateart experience as a wonderfulsculpture of the devils head, created out of matchsticks inthe very brightest of primarycolours is set alight.

Once alight the sculpture retains its shape and thebrightly coloured match heads turn to a muted greyand ash brown, as the fire rages through thesculpture lighting match head after match head. Thewhole process is an art experience that leaves a newpiece in its wake, which is then returned to theexhibition for the duration.

David’s Collage work is alsotruly amazing, I wasprivileged to see him overseeand direct his team with thecreation of his latest collage“The Last Supper”,completed and unveiled onthe 20th September 2011.

John Lennon’s phrase “Give me a Tuber, and I will get yousomething out of it” springs to mind. David will take the mostinsignificant objects, and create some truly amazing works ofart. Without giving anything away, I know that for every coathanger sculpture. David has to create three sculptures inthree different mediums.

The Turner nominated artistcompleted his MA at the RoyalCollege of Art, he went on tobecome a Royal Academician in1988 and in 2000 was appointedProfessor of Sculpture at theRoyal Academy Schools.

If I could compare David Mach tosomething I would say he‘s one ofthe seven wonder’s of the world

He is truly innovative, the works of art thatDavid and his team produce are aphenomenon, Raymond and I got an insightinto the beginnings of how his creationstranspire at his studio. One word amazing!

David’s studio was like being in Hamley’s atChristmas wherever you looked there weresurprises in every corner and everything had aplace, so neat and tidy I thought.

I was in awe of everything in the room even thelarge comfy chair in the middle of the studio allby itself which looked like an art form, “Take aseat “said David, “ Where” I replied, looking atthe chair, “I thought it was a piece of your art ”!“No Tanya he replied “that’s just a chair” hesmiled, how stupid did I feel!

We started talking; I needed to know more about David and the moulding process behind theseamazing coat hanger structures. His team set to work by making a three phase moulding processfirstly a clay form then from this they mould a water based plastic called gesmonite which the coathangers are moulded & manipulated around the newly formed structure, the plastic is burnt awayleaving the coat hanger sculpture which enables the joints to be fused together, each differentpiece has its own unique way of moulding and casting, David said “it’s all in the preparation.”

I asked him what substance hasn’t he used which he would love to work with next & in his cheekywitty banter he replied “MONEY & lots of it” can’t wait to see that one How COOL is this guy.

It’s all in the preparation
