John 6 – Feeding 5 thousand

John 6 – Feeding 5 thousandv. 25-40…31 Our fathers ate the manna

in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” 32 Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” 34 They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

Page 9: Iam2

John 6 – Feeding 5 thousandv. 25-40…35 Jesus said to them, “I

am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.

Page 10: Iam2

John 6 – Feeding 5 thousandv. 25-40…38 For I have come down

from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Page 11: Iam2

John 6 – Feeding 5 thousandv. 47-55…47 Truly, truly, I say to you,

whoever believes has eternal life. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50 This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”

Page 12: Iam2

John 6 – Feeding 5 thousandv. 47-55…52 The Jews then disputed

among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.

5 PATTERNS

of Bread

Page 20: Iam2

1. Feeding 5 thousand

• God can supply for unlimited people with limited resources

• There was more leftover than what was started with

• The test of what you depend on

John 6 – Feeding 5 thousand

v. 25-40…25 When they found him on the other side of the sea, they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you come here?” 26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves.

Page 25: Iam2

John 6 – Feeding 5 thousandv. 25-40…Do not labor for the food that

perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform?

4. The Lord’s Supper

• Jesus makes an obvious tie in this passage to the Lord’s Supper

• Bread is not the Word of God, it is Christ himself

• John 1…In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God

Page 33: Iam2

4. The Lord’s Supper

• Melchizedek…Genesis 14…17 After his return from the defeat of Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him at the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). 18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.)

4. The Lord’s Supper

• Matt. 26:26…Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

• Matt. 26:26…Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

Page 37: Iam2

4. The Lord’s Supper

• John 13…21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table close to Jesus, [5]

Page 38: Iam2

4. The Lord’s Supper

• 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus [6] of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot

Page 39: Iam2

4. The Lord’s Supper

• 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him.

Page 40: Iam2

4. The Lord’s Supper

• 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

Page 41: Iam2

4. The Lord’s Supper

• 1 Cor. 11…27 Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty concerning the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Let a person examine himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup.

Page 42: Iam2

5. Bread and Salvation

• What is bread made from?• Matt 3:12…His winnowing fork is

in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.”

Page 43: Iam2

The Parable of the Weeds

Matt 13…24 He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, 25 but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds

Page 44: Iam2

The Parable of the Weeds

[3] among the wheat and went away. 26 So when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also. 27 And the servants [4] of the master of the house came and said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does

Page 45: Iam2

The Parable of the Weeds

it have weeds?’ 28 He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ So the servants said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and gather them?’ 29 But he said, ‘No, lest in gathering the weeds you root up the wheat along with them.

Page 46: Iam2

The Parable of the Weeds

30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at harvest time I will tell the reapers, Gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned, but gather the wheat into my barn.’”

Page 47: Iam2

5. Bread and Salvation

• John 12…24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. 25 Whoever loves his life loses it,

Page 48: Iam2

5. Bread and Salvation

• and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.

In Closing…

• All the parallels point to How we view God’s provision for us

• Bread represents the simplest form of provision

• If we can’t depend upon God for bread, then how can we depend upon him for salvation?
