Update on a Challenging Year A regular visitor to Ian Anderson House was the deer, photographed here by a family member, who, together with his family, came to be fed and admired by our families and staff during last year’s hard winter. This past year was a very busy one for our hospice. Our team of five part-time RN Home Co-ordinators headed by Peggy and Tracey made a record number of visits to families in the communities of Halton and Peel, not only to those referrals seeking admission to Ian Anderson House, but also to many caregivers in the community look- ing for advice and support. By year-end, based on numbers for the first nine months in 2014, the number of home visits is expected to reach 600 and the admissions to our hospice to reach 200. If those numbers indicate a growing trend they are a clear indication, not only that more practical support should be provided to caregivers in the commu- nity, but also that more necessary time be given for advice and support by the visiting nurses contracted by the CCAC. This is an obvious gap in our current Health Care system that must be addressed if more visits to Hospital emergency rooms, particularly those with few, if any, designated palliative beds are to be avoided. Our “House” also saw some major changes in 2014. The two major ones were the installation by Oakville Hydro of a natural gas line running from Winston Churchill Blvd. which replaced our reliance on propane use and is a welcome, long awaited improvement for general efficiency and reduced operating cost. The second improvement was the replacement of the old wooden standard light poles in our parking lot, which were funded by our long-time supporter The Canadian Donner Foundation, that have much improved the lighting on the lot and are also energy and cost saving. We are very fortunate to have a “care team” at Ian Anderson House that not only met and dealt with all the challenges of 2014 but also went “above and beyond”. Peggy and Tracey and our Home Co-ordinator team made home visits to all calls made for referrals and support and were also always at the hospice to welcome and “settle in” new residents and their families. All of that, as well as handling their regular daily hospice responsibilities and increased necessary paper work was efficiently coped with. Our Personal Support Workers, who do all the major house cleaning, keep the bedrooms in the necessary condition and provide their round-the-clock resident care, also found time to spend with the increased number of families and visitors. Our Ian Anderson Volunteers cheerfully handled the increased number of phone calls, light household duties, families and visitors and still took the necessary time to spend with families and visitors over a cup of coffee in the kitchen and showing and explaining the day-to-day functioning of our hospice. ‘Behind the scenes’ our part-time administrative staff, Margaret and Lesley, have been handling a steadily increasing work load. Margaret is also responsible for hiring individuals and companies to maintain the high standards that are set for the smooth functioning of the “House” and for the gardens and grounds that are so much enjoyed by residents and families. Both also volunteer their time working at all of our events. Monique, our Resource Centre Administrator is also our “jack of all trades” who efficiently handles all the small emergencies that are normal occurrences in every home. She keeps a close eye on the work being done on the external improvements and is also largely responsible for organizing our fundraising events. The Members of our Board meet to review all that is happening at the hospice and, when necessary, combine their specific areas of professional exper- tise to make decisions that will have a positive impact on the overall function- ing of IAH. They, together with our Administrative Staff, are our essential “support team” that keep Ian Anderson House running smoothly and enables our “care team” to provide the quality and necessary care that has earned our hospice the impeccable reputation that is obviously constantly spreading. Our grateful thanks to all who gener- ously supported our Hospice in 2014 and for the past seventeen years. You made it possible for us to offer care and support to more than 1800 families in our community during a most difficult time. From all at our “House” to all of you, our sincere thanks and every good wish for the coming year. Margaret Anderson, Founder, IAH

This year, in addition to the IARC supporting the facilitation of the Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End of Life Care course,we will also be running another Team Effectiveness Series as well as hosting McMaster University’s Leadership From Within for HealthCareProfessionals. Update on a Challenging YearA regular visitor to Ian Anderson

A Profile of an IAH VolunteerCarol De’ath

Carol De’ath began gathering resource and educationalmaterial for our Ian Anderson Resource Centre in 2003before it was officially opened in the summer of 2004. Shehas continued, since that time, to expand our library thatmostly focuses on palliative care in order to offer support tofamilies in our community who are caring for a familymember in their homes.

Carol comes regularly to volunteer her time in theResource Centre each Thursday and spends much of hertime assembling our “Caregivers Tool Kit” that was designedand produced by the Centre and which has had an increasingly wide circulation tofamily caregivers in the committees of Halton and Peel.

Carol is also a generous supporter of our fundraising events and volunteers her timeat all of them. Most recently she donated and arranged beautiful centrepieces for thetables at our annual golf tournament held in September at The Indian Wells Golf Club.

Carol says that she is “impressed by the teamwork” and the willingness of ourvolunteers and staff to help at our events. We are very fortunate and grateful to haveher as a volunteer at the IARC and for her dedication and support of IAH.

Linda was a community nurse employed by a nursingagency, that was contracted by our Home Care system, whenshe was first assigned to Ian Anderson House in Septemberof 2004.

Linda has been a member of our staff since that time andcurrently works for our hospice four days each week. She isa dedicated and total professional and understands the philo-sophy and purpose of our “House”, which is to provide thenecessary and professional compassionate care that allowsfamilies to spend “quality time” with a family member.

Linda says that she is honoured to be a part of the IAHhospice care team that allows us all to give the specificpalliative care needs to the resident and to their family.

We are also very grateful to Linda and her husband for their support of our fundrais-ing events that allow us to offer our care and support, without charge, to families in thecommunity.

We are very fortunate that Linda Taylor was the nurse chosen to come to IanAnderson House in 2004 and that she has become such an important and valuablemember of our “care team”.

A Tribute to Our VolunteersAt Ian Anderson House volunteers do not perform or assist our Personal Support

Staff in providing the hands-on day-to-day personal care of residents. The most impor-tant role of our volunteer is to allow our staff to spend even more necessary time toprovide their care by answering telephone calls, preparing light meals in our kitchen, keeping the House tidy or, what has become even more important, given the ever-increasing number of visiting families, spending time welcoming those families andspending time to talk, or more important, to listen, over a cup of coffee or tea in thekitchen. Our dedicated volunteers are a very valuable and necessary part of, not onlyour hospice, but of hospice philosophy, which is to offer care and support to families.

We always welcome volunteers and if you are interested in becoming a volunteerat Ian Anderson House please call IAH. You will be contacted by by our VolunteerCo-ordinator Heidi Harrigan to be interviewed and familiarized with the day-to-dayfunctions of the hospice and will subsequently receive our specific “in-house”training.

In Appreciation of the supporters of IAHWe sincerely thank all of those who have made donations to Ian Anderson House since the publication of our

2013 Annual Newsletter. Although we are unable, due to the lack of space, to list the name of each donor, we arevery grateful to all whose generosity makes it possible for us to continue to offer care and support, without charge,to our residents and families.

A Tribute to our SupportersThe Oakville Club

2014 was the sixth consecutive year that members of theOakville Club organized an Oakville Men’s Golf Tournament insupport of Ian Anderson House. We are very grateful to MichaelJudge, John Thistlethwaite, David Angas and Jason Bradburywho formed a committee, again this year, to hold the tournamentat the Glen Abbey Golf Club.

We are also very grateful to John and Jason who combinedtheir particular talents to initiate a way to raise additional dona-tions for our hospice by producing a magazine to promote localbusinesses as well as our hospice. Their innovative approach notonly increased the donation made to Ian Anderson House, butalso helped to “spread the word” door-to-door about the much-needed service that we provide to help families during a most difficult time.

We know, from experience, how much time and effort it takes to plan, organize and run a fundraising event. We sincerely appreciate that Michael, John, David and Jason made that effort and took that time out of theirbusy lives to support our “House”. Our grateful thanks to them and to all the participants at the tournamentfor all their generous support.
