Welcome to our 12th Annual Best Bet Bull Sale.

We would like to thank each and everyone of our loyal customers for their unwavering support of our program. It is relationships with our friends, neighbors and customers that keep us driven to produce a strong group of front-end bulls.

Our goal is to produce a set of bulls that will be sound, maintenance free and profitable for you. It is our belief that the conditions where the bulls have been raised and the feed that they are developed with will lead to their productivity and longevity.

As I write this, we have our 300th calf on the ground and it has been a little chilly. Calving seasons like this make a person appreciate calves with get up and go. There will be some calves with ears slightly shorter than normal but everything is going well. The yards have certainly been clean and hard, we have to remind ourselves on the -25 nights of those “hidden benefits”. The progeny from the seven new herd sires are very exciting and have not disappointed us.

As many of you head in to calving, I wish warmer weather for you. It was such a pleasant fall and early winter it certainly eased the pressure on the feed piles. Hopefully the warm weather will return for getting your calves on the ground.

Leanna is doing very well in her second year at Olds. She has taken her AI course and is looking forward to putting it to good use at breeding time. At any given chance she is back home helping with cattle and chores and I am really looking forward to judging the Williams Lake Bull Show with her this spring. Thompson still loves his basketball, his senior team was very successful this year even though they had no grade twelves. As always, he is helpful around home with chores or on the excavator or cat, there is always something that needs done.

The range was a little tougher than normal this year but the bulls still hit the pen at nearly 800 pounds on average. These bulls have developed in conditions that are similar to yours, rough country and mother’s milk. Their performance is a result of the cow not a creep feed bin. Feet and legs are extremely important to us as they have to be able to move long distances. We feed a high roughage total mixed ration that is designed to keep the bulls healthy. We focus on the females being trouble free; good udders, easy calving and sound. They need to produce a calf every year, no free rides, no exceptions. We have a great deal of pride in our cows and invest a large amount of time and money to source new herd sires. As usual we have put a lot of emphasis on carcass traits as we still have a viable meat program and these traits are important to us as I am sure they are to you.

We have assembled a very solid set of bulls this year, the most consistent set of bulls we have ever brought to town. There are large sire groups to choose from as well as plenty of new sires to fit your programs.

It is a bright note that the cattle prices have remained strong through the fall which in turn adds rewards to the business we all enjoy. It was sure great to see lots of $1,500 calves go through the ring. Stability is very welcome in a business that traditionally has its ups and downs.

One of the soggiest made bulls you’ll find on the market that is equally as correct and strong in his makeup. He weaned at 880 pounds and kept going, weighing 1400 pounds mid-February. All that rib and depth is complimented by a smooth, strong top. There is no end to the thickness and shape of this bull. He is out of a sweet black cow with a great udder to boot, she is just as easy on the eyes. He has very nice EPDs as well being far above average in most categories.

Time Out is out of one of Muirhead’s favorite cows, they have since flushed her and have four more sons in their current sale. She has raised a previous herd sire that sold to LaBattes and Circle 7. Time Out was our choice of their bulls and the second high seller. We chose him as a calving ease sire to use on our black Simmental heifers as well as performance cows. He has calved fantastically well and we have his third set of calves on the ground now. He is long bodied, very sound and has a stride to admire, we used him on 55 females last spring. Time Out is in the top 4% for Calving Ease and top 10% for Birth Weight as well as having great carcass EPDs.

MUIRHEADS TIME OUT 263BLittle Man’s Eyecandy is a bull we bought as a calf in 2012 and the owner liked him so much that we agreed on him retaining him for the first year. He had just won the Reserve Bull Calf Champion at Farm Fair international. His calves have been very well received here and in Alberta. He is out of a beautiful black blaze faced dam LFE Candy Kisses and Wheatland’s famous 680S.

All around a very attractive, strong made bull out of a great 14 year old cow. His dam is an excellent uddered black cow who has raised many keepers. This bull is soft made, with good thickness and muscling in an eye appealing package. He has good length of spine and is stout to boot. He’s a hard one to pick apart, there’s a lot of good here. His EPDs are also a “wow”, he is one of very few bulls out there that are positive in every single category.

Desperado is a very dark red, Red Angus performance bull. He is out of an absolute tank of a cow with a beautiful udder. Purchased from Circle G, along with his half brother, they were the high selling Angus bulls in the sale. He is super mellow and easy to handle. His sons have fantastic growth and he certainly stamps his pattern on them.

He is tremendous as a calving ease bull with performance, ranking in the top 3% for Calving Ease and top 2% Maternal Calving Ease as well as top 20% for Weaning Weight. We have a second set of calves on the ground now and they look great. We can hardly wait to calve his daughter because he’s backed by a super dam and many good cow families. He is a very sound four-year-old with tremendous feet and legs.

We chose 12C from Erixon’s sale for his mass and substance. He was a high seller from this prestigious sale. He is positive in most of his EPD categories including top 4% for Growth.

We bought Chancellor as a calving ease sire to use on our red heifers. With an 88 lb. birth weight and weaning over 800 lbs. from a first calf heifer. He is incredibly easy keeping, in fact his nickname here is “Fatso”. He has huge testicles and is very thick and moderate. Purchased from Red Top Livestock he was their high seller. Chancellor has excellent EPDs, he is top 10% for Marbling, top 4% for TI, top 10% for Maternal Calving Ease and top 25% for Maternal Weaning and top 30% for Milk as well as very good in the other categories.

Welcome to the Best Bet Bull Sale. This is the 12th year we have had the pleasure of joining Mitchell Cattle Co. to bring you a great set of bulls.

The summer of 2018 in our area was very dry and we were plagued by forest fires around us. This left us with less than normal hay crops and pastures and an early start for winter feeding.

We always enjoy visits with the grandchildren, they are growing up so fast. They certainly love to come to the farm to see the animals.

We are continuously searching for herd bulls that will meet our criteria for soundness and performance, ensuring quality females to put back in the herd and bulls that we are proud to sell. Building a stronger cow herd for us is also building a stronger cow herd for our bull buyers. Our breeding season is kept short. If a cow is open, late, or not raising a calf – she doesn’t live here anymore.

For 2019 we bring you a set of yearling bulls from several different herd sires, both walking bulls and AI sires. This will be the last bulls offered that are sired by Duralta 2Y Side Show 73B and HR Hahn Adapted 61B, both have been well accepted at our sale and we have retained a number of females in our herd, time to move on to new genetics. The Chinook offspring offer exceptional calving ease. The consistency and quality is very impressive. We have calved cows and heifers bred to him for two years now and he is a gem. These calves are born small with exceptional vigor. At about a month of age they have already developed a good top and are very growthy. At weaning they weigh up with the calves from other sire groups. The “Chinook” sired bulls will give you great calving ease and a very saleable product in the fall or females to retain in your herd.

The bulls have been vaccinated with Express 5 and Fermicon 7/Somnugen and recently treated with pour-on Ivomec. Prior to the sale the bulls will be semen tested and evaluated for soundness. They have all been tie broke. We do not sell any Angus bulls off the farm prior to the BEST BET BULL SALE.
