Why is Politics So Important?

“Politics ought to be the part-time profession of every citizen who would protect the rights and privileges of free people and who would preserve what is good and fruitful in our national heritage.”-Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1954

“No man’s life, liberty or property are safe while the Legislature is in session.”

Why is Politics important to REALTORS®?

Politics is a game of winners and losers-with very real consequences for the losers.

It’s important to REALTORS® because you have so much to win or lose.

Every aspect of Real Estate transaction is regulated by the government.

What decisions affect our industry?

Government action (or inaction) affects the profitability of the real estate profession

Decisions made by lawmakers determine the future of your industry:

taxation, homeownership, property rights, growth and development, real estate law, technology,

the environment

Why is grassroots so important?

Special interest groups have a limited number of tools in the government relations toolbox.

There are three basic elements of a successful government affairs program:

A formidable PAC A team of skilled

professional lobbyists A strong grassroots

advocacy network

RPAC

RPAC is the number one PAC in the state

Our PAC spending has diversified to become a more effective voice in Idaho politics.

Electing REALTOR® friendly candidates is just a starting point

What we do after the election that determines our success in the political arena

GRASSROOTS ACTIVISM

In order to leverage our relationship with legislators and maximize our political influence, IAR is expanding its grassroots activism.

We have a good record, but times are changing and we need to be ahead of the curve.

Why it will succeed…

POLITICAL TRUISM: “The pendulum will swing back”- Joe Cannon Speaker of the House, 1903-1911

This program will succeed because lawmakers are ultimately accountable not to PACs or lobbyists, but to their CONSTITUENTS.
