What had been my role at IAU until now

On May 2017, Paco Rico (IAU Director of Competitions & Records) call me because he need some

help to relaunch IAU Records Committee. I quickly accepted the challenge and became IAU

Records Committee Coordinator. Since then I have led the developing of provisional rules of

procedure that allow IAU to study, between May and December 2017, 42 potential new WBP or

WABP that was waiting for a final solution.

In the meantime, IAU Records Committee, under my leadership, drafted new Guidelines for

World Best Performances that were approved by IAU Executive Council at their last January

meeting. That new guidelines creates a new high-speed procedure that have allow IAU to

publish new WBP/WABP tables almost every month.

Paco also asked me to be member of IAU Technical Committee. As member of this committee

my first duty was to analyse timing problems detected at IAU 24h World Championship Belfast

2017 and prepare an urgent proposal to modify timing requirements for future MIAU events.

That proposal was debated at Technical Committee and were adopted as provisional measure

by IAU Executive Council at their January 2018 meeting. After that I am taking part in

development of new Technical Guidelines for MIAU events as member of the working group

that are drafting a new text to be propose first to IAU Technical Committee and later to IAU

Executive Council.

My proposals for 2018 – 2020

If Congress delegates elects me as new IAU Director my main goals at IAU Executive Council will

be:

• introduce new technologies, not only at MIAU events but also at the IAU daily

operations. This could simplify some processes that allow IAU volunteers to save time.

• provide my experience in the organization of athletics international events to maintain

or, if it is possible, improve the quality of IAU competitions.

• check and update all technical related IAU guides and guidelines.

• introduce new officiating standards at MIAU events, considering current and new

technologies.

With the last 6 years from 2012-2016, the Americas have grown from 6 to 13 IAU America member federations. The effort continues

to address potential federations to become part of the IAU family; not just in name, but to encourage participation in our events,

hosting of ultramarathons, and involvement in our IAU business.

My objectives for the next two years include:

• Liaise with the LOC to promote the protocol aspect of our IAU championships to include opening, closing, and awards

ceremonies. This responsibility I have fulfilled successfully since 2016 for the IAU world championships.

• Continue with the IAU Action List that indicates and emphasizes the commitments to the IAU of the executive council

members. Hold council members accountable for their commitments to the IAU.

• Revise the IAU Constitution

• improve and facilitate communication between the IAU and the national governing bodies, the race organizations, athletes,

media and potential sponsors

• Promote the strategic targets of the IAU

• Survey member federations and athletes asking what each would like from the IAU and how the IAU is perceived, what

needs to change

• Recognize media sponsors and supporters

• Strive to improve and to further create marketing methodologies to explore potential opportunities for financial funding

and advertising of our MIAUC’s.

• bAchieving greater recognition and participation in our MIAUC’s

• Provide adequate documentation of what we do, resulting in preservation of our knowledge and information base, as well

as providing instructional tools

• Recognize the necessary attributes each of the IAU council members bring to operate as an efficient and effective business,

and then assess the strengths of all council members utilizing those strengths to benefit the IAU operations

• Utilize our resources, especially the Area Representatives in the global business of the IAU (with their strengths and

talents). Each of us should be involved in various IAU committees, taking the lead where our strengths (and interests) lie. In

the past area representatives have been under-utilized and limited by their perceived limited scope of responsibility to the

council

• To have MIAUC’s in place two years prior to the competitions

• Positioning the IAU strategically within the IAAF, National Athletics Federations, and within the trail community

• Be an ambassador for the sport of ultrarunning, promoting it throughout the world
