The  IB  Diploma  Programme (DP)  is  an  academically  challenging  and  balanced  programme of  education  with  final  examinations  that  prepares  students,  aged  16  to  19,  for  success  at  university  and  life  beyond.  It  has  been  designed  to  address  the  intellectual,  social,  emotional  and  physical  well-being  of  students.  The  programme has  gained  recognition  and  respect  from  the  world’s  leading  universities.

The  Diploma  Programme prepares  students  for  effective  participation  in  a  rapidly  evolving  and  increasingly  global  society.

What  is  the  IB  Diploma  Programme?

• The  overall  grade  averages  in  grades  11  and  12  have  been  approximately  83%  for  the  past  10  years,  which  match  the  LCC  averages  on  five  ministry  exams.  For  the  three  years  that  the  IBDP  has  been  offered,  the  overall  averages  have  been  86.5%.

• When  using  the  IB  Schools  of  Ontario  conversion  scale,  the  converted  LCC  IB  exam  average  (5.3)  is  87%.

• So  while  averages  in  some  courses  may  be  a  little  higher  and  others  a  little  lower  than  87%,  overall  the  grades  appear  to  be  both  fair  and  accurate.

Are  IB  DP  grades  fair  and  accurate?

• The  IB  Diploma  Programme  is  a  challenging  programme  that  does  place  additional  demands  on  students,  including  the  Theory  of  Knowledge  (presentation  and  paper),  Extended  Essay  and  Higher  Level  course  requirements.

• However,  all  students  in  grade  11  will  do  a  research  paper,  presentation  and  CAS  as  part  of  our  program.

• Most  grade  11  classes  combine  IB  and  QEP  students.

• To  the  extent  that  is  possible,  we  are  always  working  to  make  improvements  to  alleviate  some  of  the  stress  imposed  by  the  programme.  That  said,  the  rigours  experienced  by  students  are  often  more  attributable  to  the  Quebec  ministry  requirements,  such  as  scientific  math  (equivalent  to  Ontario  grade  12  Advanced  Functions),  as  opposed  to  the  IB  Programme  itself.

Is  the  DP  too  challenging?

Page 13: IB Presentation Jan17 - Lower Canada College · 2017-01-19 · Agenda • Overview-of-the-IB-Diploma-Programme • Reasonsto-choose-the-IB-Diploma- Programme • Frequentlyasked-questions

• A  number  of  independent  studies  conducted  by  universities  in  the  US  and  Canada  concluded  that  IB  students  are  well  prepared  for  the  demands  of  university  compared  to  non-IB  students.  The  studies  also  indicated  higher  university  graduation  rates  for  IB  compared  to  non-IB  students.

• In  particular,  a  study  conducted  by  the  University  of  British  Columbia  concluded  that  the  mean  first  year  average  of  North  American  IB  students  is  4.35%  higher  than  other  North  American  secondary  school  students.

• In  a  survey  that  we  conducted  among  our  first  cohort  of  IB  students,  94%  reported  that  the  IB  Programme  was  excellent  preparation  for  university  and  81%  reported  that  their  grades  either  went  up  or  stayed  the  same  in  first  year.*

• On  average  students  see  a  10  point  drop  in  their  first  year  of  university  (source:  Martinello  &  Finnie,  Brock  University)

Does  taking  the  IB  DP  prepare  students  for  the  rigours  of  university?

Page 14: IB Presentation Jan17 - Lower Canada College · 2017-01-19 · Agenda • Overview-of-the-IB-Diploma-Programme • Reasonsto-choose-the-IB-Diploma- Programme • Frequentlyasked-questions

• Every  university  and  programme  has  its  own  admission  requirements  that  will  vary.  UBC,  for  example,  places  a  premium  on  IB  students.

• In  our  survey  of  our  IB  graduates,  76%  reported  that  the  IB  Diploma  was  instrumental  in  gaining  admission  to  the  university  of  their  choice.

• In  a  2014  survey  conducted  by  the  National  Association  for  College  Admission  Counselling (NACAC),  success  in  college  preparatory  courses  and  strength  of  academic  curriculum  are  considered  to  be  two  of  the  top  three  most  important  factors  in  college  admission  decisions  *

What  impact  does  the  IB  have  on  university  admission?

Page 15: IB Presentation Jan17 - Lower Canada College · 2017-01-19 · Agenda • Overview-of-the-IB-Diploma-Programme • Reasonsto-choose-the-IB-Diploma- Programme • Frequentlyasked-questions

• Whether  or  not  a  student  gets  advanced  credits  depends  on  the  university,  the  IB  courses  completed,  final  IB  exam  grades  and  the  programme  to  which  the  student  has  applied.  McGill,  for  example,  may  give  up  to  30  credits  (one  academic  year),  while  UBC  gives  first  year  credit  based  on  performance  in  higher  level  IB  courses  (and  some  standard  level  courses.)

• In  our  survey  of  IB  graduates,  77%  said  they  received  university  credits  for  IB  courses.

Do  students  get  advanced  credits  for  the  IB  Diploma?

Page 16: IB Presentation Jan17 - Lower Canada College · 2017-01-19 · Agenda • Overview-of-the-IB-Diploma-Programme • Reasonsto-choose-the-IB-Diploma- Programme • Frequentlyasked-questions

1. Does  entry  into  IB  Courses  mean  that  students  have  to  stay  for  grade  12?➢ No.  Students  will  be  very  well  prepared  for  CEGEP  study  and  will  receive  their  Quebec  High  School  Leaving  at  the  end  of  grade  11.  However,  they  do  have  the  option  to  stay  for  grade  12  and  gain  an  IB  Diploma  or  take  a  combination  of  IB  courses  and  Grade  12  courses.

2. Will  LCC  still  be  admitting  students  directly  into  grade  12?

➢ Yes.  Students  will  be  admitted  directly  into  grade  12  from  other  schools.  However,  these  students  will  not be  able  to  earn  an  IB  Diploma.  There  may  be  an  opportunity  to  complete  IB  courses,  e.g.,  IB  economics.

3. Are  options  decreased  for  students  not  in  the  IB  stream?

➢ No.  There  is  still  a  wide  range  of  options  available  to  all  students  in    grade  11.  In  some  subjects  they  will  take  courses  with  IB  students.

4. Does  completing  the  IB  Diploma  guarantee  my  child  entry  to  McGill?➢ No.  McGill  and  all  other  universities  offer  places  based  on  how  students  fare  in  their  IB  courses.

➢ To  find  entry  requirements  for  universities  simply  Google  ‘IB  admission  requirements’  and  the  university  name.

➢ IB  students  are  not  considered  to  be  international  students  by  McGill  or  any  other  university.

5. Are  there  extra  costs  involved  in  IB?➢ There  is  no  cost  for  participation  in  the  programme.  The  only  additional  costs  are  for  the  online  courses  and  the  Extended  Essay  online.

➢ Other  costs  include  the  Year  2  examination  costs.  These  are  only  payable  in  the  grade  12  year.

6. Will  IB  mean  that  my  child  cannot  take  part  in  the  co-curricular  life  of  the  school?➢ No,  through  the  CAS  component  students  are  mandated  to  be  involved  in  co-curricular  activities.  However,  the  IB  Diploma  Programme is  challenging  and  requires  students  to  stay  on  top  of  their  studies.
