EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AT IBE

The Institute of Business Education has recognized the importance of extra-curricular activities in the development of students. As such, the Institution has injected a number of activities into its work programme aimed at fostering the all-round development of its students. These activities include educational tours, cultural events and religious activities. These activities are planned in such a way, that they do not affect the academic performance of the students, but instead are geared toward the building of self-esteem and morale.

Dear God, as I begin this day,

Let me turn my thoughts to you,

And ask your helping guiding me in all that I say and do.

Give me the patience that I need to keep my peace of mind,

Give me the courage to face life’s trials,

Give me the discipline I need to study my schoolwork,

Most of all give me an opportunity to share your love with the world.

Amen.

Parents and IBE

Parents are encouraged to communicate with the school as often as possible. The importance of good parent and teacher relations cannot be overemphasized. Parent/Teacher Meetings are held once every term. At these meetings parents are free to make comments and suggestions. A report on the students’ performance is presented by the Principal and then by the individual subject teachers. After the meeting parents are given the opportunity to interact with the teachers on a one and one basis.

Guidelines to help our child improve

Allow them to watch educational programs. As a parent you should screen what they are looking at on the television. It is advisable to allow them to watch televisions for some amount of time. For example, one hour. However, let them know that they can watch television after they have finished their homework and finished studying. If, by the time they are finished it is too late, then no television because they need to get to bed early so as to get up early to be at school on time the next morning.

It is advisable that as soon as they receive homework they should get started on it. They should not wait until the last minute. We would like for you, the parents, to take it upon yourselves to ensure that they do so. This can be accomplished by finding out what they did at school that day, ensuring that they did collect homework and that they do it. (They cannot say that they don’t have homework because at some time or the other they will).

Try to be with them) even if it’s for a short period of time) when they are studying. This would be a form of encouragement.

Show an interest in what they are learning. For instance, ask them about the work they do in school each day. Let them explain it to you. Ask questions about what they said after they finished explaining. This will show that you are listening and also it helps them to remember things. If when you ask them a question they do not know the answer then tell them to write it down and ask the teacher the next day. Let them report the answer to you.

Pick up their books and ask questions pertaining to what is in their books. Ensure that they study at least one subject per day. However they can take one day off. Help them to construct a timetable for studying.

Advise them to read over their work, which is not the same as studying. Ensure that they have a novel to read during their spare time. It enhances their vocabulary. If they cannot pronounce a word then let them spell it to you and you can help them to pronounce it. Also you can provide an exercise book for them to write every word that they could not or cannot pronounce. At the end of the day they can go over the words. So the next time they will not have to ask for assistance. And their vocabulary would be building all the time.

"Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that a son of a mineworker can become the head of the mine that a child of farm workers can become the president of a nation." —Nelson Mandela
